Wing Zero Custom
The Wing Zero Custom from Gundam Wing Endless Waltz. Ldraw model included.
About this creation
[Gundam Brackground]
The very first Gundam, originally designed 16 years ago, is more powerful than any of the five that were created for Operation Meteor. The Wing Zero's most powerful and dangerous feature is the Zero System, a control interface that feeds tactical data and combat simulations directly into the pilot's mind; Heero Yuy is one of the few pilots capable of handling this system. Also noteworthy is its primary weapon, the devastating twin buster rifle. As depicted in Endless Waltz, the Wing Zero lacks its "neo bird mode" transformation, but gains a set of feathered wings that enable it to survive re-entry and glide through the atmosphere.
[My Model]
This was my first try at building a model in ldraw before building it with real pieces. Construction with real pieces has been completed, but I still need to update the ldraw model to match what I did in real life. I didn't make that many changes; I just redid the foot joint to make it more pose able and shortened the legs by 2 pegs.

[Notes on displaying the real thing]
First off, to my disappointment the weight of the 4 wings made it impossible to get this guy to stand up straight without assistance. Therefore I had to build a stand that would support him. It turned out much nicer than I had anticipated, so Iíd like to share how I did it in case others wish to do the same.
1) Bought a rectangular wooden base at Michaels, although Iím sure other arts and crafts store would have similar things.
2) Bought the thinnest 1ft long steel rod I could find from the local hardware store.
3) Drilled a pilot hole in the center of the base which was slightly less than the diameter of the rod.
4) Hammered the rod into the base.
5) Picked out a black 2 x 6 lego plate and super glued it at the appropriate height to the rod.
6) Attached the modelís back to the 2 x 6 lego plate and posed the feet and legs.
7) Finished! I now have a nice sturdy display for him which can easily be removed if I wish to make changes to his design.

[The ldraw format]
Visit ldraw.org for more information and to download the free programs need to view/render/manipulate my models. For those unfamiliar with ldraw, it will create step by step instructions as well as parts lists for any model. It really is a wonderful program and ldraw.org has a bunch of tutorials for getting you started.

[Notes about my ldraw model]
I would consider this sort of a rough draft model. I didn't take the time to make perfect directions, or to make sure all the joints were lined up exactly. Also, be sure to have extra 1/2 technic pins on hand if you're using the ldraw generated parts list. There were several places where I left them out simply because it got annoying constantly moving around those little pins as I was changing/moving stuff around.

[Closing notes]
I've posted several other Gundams from Gundam Wing Endless Waltz, and I'm in the process of working on more from Seed and Seed Destiny. Check them out in my brickshelf gallery: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?m=Draez

This and your strike freedom are among the best Lego gundams on the web. The wings look spectacular, and great idea for the stand.
