This Dark she-Toa of Iodine with Her Beguiling Iodide Minion
About this creation
are my entry for Round Four of the PeriodicBionicleContest2012.
The all important Chemistry Background Infomation…
AMY IO is named after that Amylose charged-Iodine Complex so familiar to every school kid the world over. Every kid has seen what happens when a solution of Iodine is dropped on a Potato! But, kids are never told the formal name or the chemistry of the colored stuff that is left on the Potato! Anyhoo, Amylose being part of a Potato Starch Polymer, is made up of long chains of Glucose Molecules connected by a special kind of bond linkage. As a result of the angles in this linkage, Amylose forms a Spiral similar to a coiled spring. A charged Tri-Iodine Molecule can slip inside of this Amylose Sprial. The resulting Complex (the stuff that is left on the Potato) has a Dark Blue or Blue-Black color. That’s why Amy is the color she is! And did you know Potatoes are vegetable members of the family Solanum, the same family that includes the Deadly Nightshade… Muah, ha, ha! So, don’t let Amy’s flowers fool you. They are special six petal color mutations of the deadly Solanum or Nightshade flower… Muah, ha, ha! And… surprisingly, the word ‘Io’ means ‘Ego’ in Italian… most appropriate for this Shady Lady who loves herself just as much as the Dark Side!
INDI UMA is named after an important Iodine Salt, Indium Iodide. Indium Iodide is used in Mercury Lamp Bulbs that radiate Blue Light. That’s why Indi is the color he is! Look for the Blue Bulbs on the end of Indi’s fingertips. Anyhoo, these types of Blue Bulbs are used in the floodlighting of trees in parks and gardens or in spectacular night lighting effects of prestigious buildings. Surprisingly, the name ‘Uma’ also means ‘bright or luminous’ in Hindi/Sanskrit! There’s no dim bulb here, Indi is quite bright! All this makes the elfin Indi a perfect foil to Amy!
“Uhm… Mistress, I may have something to tell you.”

“Indy, you did WHAT?! You dislocated your shoulder during the last mission!
We have no time for this! This… this is weakness! Away… Be gone with you!”

“Sometimes that bright blue munchkin can drive me insane!
How does one dislocate an elfin shoulder on a simple day hike?!”

“I vow I will regain my Mistress Amy’s favor! Ouch… my shoulder!“

“Ooo… ouch… Mistress… There’s got to be a better way! Can’t I visit a Chiropractor?!”
“Foolish elfin, do you think I can afford that kind of money on frivolous things!
There it’s done… good as new!”
“Ohhhh, well at least I got some hands-on attention… hee, hee, hee! “

4th Wall: Coincidentally, my youngest daughter’s name is Amy and she likes dragons!

Ah, forgot the like. Here you go :)
Thanx for remembering! This was my favorite build so far in the contest. I've built several blue mocs before, all of which have been torn apart. But these are keepers. I have a bunch of olds&ends of varous blue parts that I'm thinking about using all together in some kind of fem-moc... we'll see... it's still just a concept/thought. :) |

Great creations! Amy Io looks very nice, her proportions are very good, the dragon head is great and the flowers on her are nicely used! Indi Uma looks also very nice, very interesting concept for elf ears :). Keep up the good work (especially all the females) and good luck in the contest! |

hahaha, great poses on the cover! Nice too see a female one of these...
I've been fiddling with outdoor shots so I felt a need to retain at least 1 stove top shot! (The truth being that we have been having odd weather and it started to drizzle.) Yes, that is my goal... I've been trying to build a lot of females lately. I just KNOW (and hope) you and Barto are up to something... I hope we all get to see what it is. Thanx for stopping by and commenting! :) |

That's the best description of potato powers ever. Indi seems to enjoy his mistresses chastisements rather too much. Indi's arabesque toes are great btw.
I have absolutely no idea where all of this came from?! The light bulb just appeared... (it may have been blue too.) I figure, if you are going to build arabesque toes, might as well do them BIG! Thanx for dropping by! :) |

Yeah, the lower legs might be a bit thin, but it kind of gives a bird-like appearance, which fits with the head design. Maybe a nice transition from the somewhat thick torso to the thin legs would be to go for a tapered upper leg that goes from thin at the top to thick at the bottom. Keep experimenting with the proportions, I like your quirky yet well-thought out builds, and I think that it would really benefit your style to come up with some odd yet still natural-looking proportions. I can't wait to see what you come up with next! :) |

Very nice build, I think the upper legs could be a little thicker though. I love the dragon head design, it's very unique, especially for a Toa!
Thanx! Can you believe the Shady Lady's upper legs are actually 2 different limbs pinned together and with added greebles... go figure. I actually fussed abit with the lower legs being too thin, but then I liked the effect? Hee, hee that's a dragon mask! :) |

I think it's INDI UMA that has the medium blue coloring? Anyway, she has a great Classic Space feel to her. Great work. ~Dave
Thanks for stopping by and commenting! Indi actually is regular ole blue in color which is probably what gives him that 'classic' feel? The shady lady herself is dark blue. I wish I had known about all of this Bio stuff and element control/power when I was teaching Chem... oh the possibilities! Thanx again! :) |

Once again, you take the more interesting way to fit within the bounderies. Very impressive work on these builds and love the characters.
Thanx, it was really Phos' statement about the minion might be a large dog that gave me the idea of a little reversal of characters! I have also been wanting to build a dragon lady for awhile now! :) |

Awesome! I love how, where everyone else focuses on the mainstream applications, appearances, et cetera of each element, you go straight for the obscure and unique ones. Good luck!
