Hellboy for MSXC
A scene from the Hellboy story "Heads." In the fight category of Mr. Xenomurphy's Superhero Contest
About this creation

For Mr. Xenomurphy's Superhero Contest, I knew that I wanted to do two things. The first was that I wanted to use a superhero that I did not think would come up in others' creations, and the other was that I did not want to use minifigs. I was successful on both accounts.

Hellboy is my all-time favorite superhero. As a fan of the movies and the comics, I wanted to portray one of the creepier stories, "Heads." In this story, Hellboy goes to a Japanese home and is welcomed by a group of people. That night, he finds their headless bodies. The heads are out and about, searching for meat, with Hellboy being their chosen dinner.

Now I realize that there is a lot of overhang, but in the group it says that arm, leg, plant etc. overhang is acceptable. It is also clearly a 16x16 base, so I should be okay. However, if the judges feel it isn't acceptable, I am perfectly alright with that decision and be disqualified. I am happy with this creation and would rather not change it.

As you can see, this is the comic version of Hellboy, with shorts and hooves. Instead of his revolver though, I made him Big Baby from the second Hellboy movie. I plan on making a few more BPRD members from the comics in the future, so keep a look out. Thanks for viewing.

If you are not familiar with Hellboy, I suggest you read both the comics and watch the movies, as they both paint a picture of his character. I hope you enjoy them.

Quoting Justin L. One of the best large-scale figs I've ever seen. Good luck in the contest! P.S. Is that Kelso leaning on you in your buddy icon/avatar?
Thanks! And yes, it is in fact Kelso.

Quoting Tiler . Your score = 9 > Really cool build, nice choice of character, I only wish he was a little... bolder :) After all, that's the spirit of Hellboy. Very nice nevertheless.
I plan on working on him a bit, so maybe the chin will jut out a bit more along with some other modifications and he will become more bold.

I think our fellow Luggers and others below have picked up on the pertinent points here mate, but I've just got to say that is sweet! Glad you went with the 'path less travelled' as we'd discussed, but realistically there could have been half a dozen hellboy entries and this would have stood out on sheer quality alone. Well done.

The technique with the trench coat is perfect, and you were able to capture the organic shapes in his head and torso really well.

Quoting Mr. Xenomurphy DQ? Why? Like you said (and I wrote down in the rules thread), arm, leg, plant etc. overhang is acceptable (also tail). Tyler, this is totally awesome. I like Hellboy as much as the short-lived series "Trencher". Can't wait to see the other characters. If I were you, I'd try to take a picture with heavy shadows in front of a very dark background, to imitate Mignola's style. Good luck in the contest.
I'm glad I was able to keep the overhang in bounds. I like the idea of the darkness shot, maybe once I make two or three members I'll take some of those. Good suggestion!

Quoting Leda Kat =^..^= You have completely found your calling Tyler. From your bandersnatch to your Absalom now this, creatures are your forte. Don't ever stop building them.
I'm starting to realize that too. An unexpected calling, but one I'm liking more and more with each new build. Thanks!

TOUGH!! What a great representation of Hellboy! I am a huge fan of the first movie, not so much of the second though. Great work on the figure. I like the addition of the Big Baby. I may have to give Hellboy a shot in my style. BTW, I have an LDD Samaritan you might wanna check out. Excellent work!

Excellent job Tyler! You did an amazing job of capturing him in all his glory! I'm afraid of using his name though, as the evil filter might delete my comment. :P While the trench coat is amazing, I think the best aspect of this build has to be his head. Either way, great job all around oh mighty tall one!

Quoting Dave Kaleta Tyler, Wow, fantastic work on the trench-coat. I know it must have been difficult, but the technique you used was an excellent solution. Great work at a tough scale. ~Dave
Thanks. Yeah, I'm just glad that I picked up 25-ish of those clip-tiles in a Bricklink order a few years back.
