Red Falcon Flappter
A working model of a 4-winged steam-powered ornithopter. About as aerodynamic as a bumblebee... but they do all right... right?
About this creation
The Red Falcon is a hand-built prototype ornithopter, with alter-flapping "dragonfly" wings powered by a closed-system air-cooled Zenner Stone steam engine.

Zenner Stone? What's a--
CLASSIFIED.

Pilot: Heh, nothin' impresses chicks like my Red Falcon!

Observer: He thinks this thing's actually gonna fly!

Walkaround

Overall shape.

Rear port quarter, showing the main tank and some of the under-sing greeblefication.

Forward port view. the Zenner Stone reactor is housed in the nose, far enough from the saddle to protect the pilot from most of the stray gamma radiation leakage.

Rear starboard quarter, with the smaller recondenser tank and the return line, which brings cooled water back from the engine.

Detail on the forward section. The curving brown line is part ofthe re-cooling system.
GREEBLE!

Working Mechanicals

Starboard under-wing contraptionation. Here's the working/playability part: turn the big wheel on the bottom, gears bend the crankshaft 90*, bringing power inside...

...where is is split to two flanking axles, each turning a crank connected to vertical pistons...

(If you squint, you can see the pistons inside.)

...timed so that they alternate, always one up, the other down.

The exposed heads of the pistons, with crossbeams leading to connection arms anchored to the wings.

Forward wings down.

crank a little... wings even.

Rear wings down, fore-wings up! Crank crank crank. FLAP! FLAP! FLAP!

If I overcome the laziness, film the thing, and set up a youtube account, I'd love to embed a video of the thing in action. But I'll probably dismantle the Red Falcon before I get around to doing that. :-(

And we're off and away!

Just in time!

Quoting Mike Bernd Dude.... that is a wicked build. I love who big the whole thing is, and still only seats 2 minifigs! Anyways the details are excellent, and I can tell you have the old Destroyer Droid technic set (I have the same one, it is decaying on my top shelf). Interior mechanisms are sweet, especially the flapping ability. If you scroll up and down really fast it looks like the ornithopter is actually flying. Well anyways mate thanks for sharing this beast, and MOC on!
Yep, the destroyer droid never seemed to have too many useful bits, until I started thinking of steampunk builds. But anyway, you can't guess how flattering it is to think that someone out there is scrolling updownupdown to get a sense of this moc. Thank you. I really do need to film this thing.

Quoting StoveTop Creator Great design, color, and motion on the dragonfly wings! I love the incorporation of a tad bit more color to a steampunk design. :)
Thanks man! And, yeah, brown and grey are good staples of the Steampunk genre, but I figure they had paint back in the days of yore, too. If I ever get the parts, I'll make a steampunk sumthin-er-other in teal, just for you. Something with a bay window, gingerbread eaves... and cannons.

"can't believe that this one is not made out of lego..." I don't understand. But thanks.

The dragonfly design is great, especially with the movement built in.
