Smaug the Tremendous
"Well, thief! I smell you and I feel your air. I hear your breath. Come along! Help yourself again, there is plenty to spare!"
About this creation
*SPOILER ALERT* I don't want to give away the movie or anything but there's a fierce dragon named Smaug in "The Hobbit".

This is my third LEGO version.

The two previous attempts can be seen here: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=11805

I finally finished the rest of him, I had previewed just his head before.

I have to be honest about the treasure, most of it is gold foil I got from a craft store.

I used real LEGO coins to make imprints into the foil and then draped it around a LEGO base. Then I spread the real stuff around, pretty convincing, huh?

I can't wait to see what he looks like in the movies. Let's just hope LEGO makes a decent version of him.

Updated: 08/25/2012

Here's Smaug in action.

I made his wings out of red vinyl from the craft store.

"Old fool! Why there is a large patch in the hollow of his left breast as bare as a snail
out of its shell!"

Wow, this is AWESOME!! Those details are spot on, the eyes are terrific, the gold foil is ingenious, and I like how you hid Bilbo Baggins in there. Do you think the directors of the Hobbit will choose your design for Smaug in their movie?

The fully posable dragon is quite impressive. But I have to be honest, for me the real hero of the build is that floor! I would never in a million years thought of building it that way... but it looks incredibly cool! I can't wait to try to replicate it. Very well done. Attack!

Fantastic! While I understand the monetary advantages of using foil, a purist pile of coins would have increased the "wow factor" of this scene, but your dragon makes up for that. Fantastic work!

The gold cheat seems a great cheat, and worth fit for the effect. Smaug himself is a lovely build, lots of great muscle modling.

You better give Lego the design for this if you want them to sell something worth buying. Plus half the pieces you get now are rubber. Yum.

Very good job! Telling that Smaug is in the story isn't a spoiler because in the very beginning when the dwarfs are in Bag-End they tell how they are going on the quest to take their gold back from Smaug.

Amazing work on the dragon himself, and a very clever idea for the treasure pile! The tail looks a little segmented, but I know how difficult that is to fix without losing pose-ability.

The dragon could have better wings, but the best thing is the gold solution. I would prefer purist, but that does not mean that I do not believe your idea is clever.

I think you know that lego will disappoint on their version of Smaug ;) You, however, have definitely not disappointed me! I remember seeing the head and thinking it looked really good, but this is, well, a masterpiece! The gold foil is a very clever idea too. Would it be possible to see Smaug on his own with a white background? Not a problem if not ;) Great work!
