THE AMAZING SPIDER MAN
ULTRA-POSEABLE LEGO ACTION FIGURE
After completing my last two figures (Deadpool / Batman) I decided that my current human figure design was good, but still somewhat limiting, today's figures are more poseable than ever, and I felt that my Lego Figures should follow the same evolution. This was only part of the impetus for the redesign, the other reason of course being the subject matter. Spider-Man needed to be extremely poseable even more so than a typical human being, so a complete overhaul was needed. He also needed to be slimmer to match Spider-Man's lithe, athletic physique, while including additional joints. Quite a challenge.
NEW AND IMPROVED
-He has a ball joint at the base of the neck as well as pivot joint at the base of the skull, allowing him to look all the way down and over his shoulders when contorted.
-A mid-torso joint that allows him to bend his spine forward and back, it also rotates from left to right, like the waist joint.
-His elbows and knees are double jointed, which allows free range of movement and the ability to fully crouch his legs.
-The hips can now allow the legs up and over the waste line allowing for those very spider-like poses.
-His ankles have a second pivot joint for extra steep ankle poses, as well of full range of motion in the main joint.
-His feet have an articulated toe piece to make those perching poses more natural.
-I got a lot of feedback about some of my more lackluster photos of Batman, so I purchased better photo equipment, seems to have made a difference, Thanks for the tips!
I'M OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS FOR MY NEXT FIGURE, SOUND OFF IN THE COMMENTS!
Also A special Thank You to those of you who helped make my last figure so big I got on Gizmodo, Geek tyrant, Brother's Brick and many others.

Amazing is a fitting adjective, as it truly is. As for the next figure, how about Wolverine?
He's definitely on my list. I was thinking about parts I would use for the claws (With popout action of course) I may even look in to chrome bricks for that one. But I believe I will be "Assembling" something else first. ;) |

To be honbest, I've never been a huge fan of large LEGOŽ figures. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I don't like them, it's just that I'm more into minifigs. But what you did with my most beloved superhero of all is so cool and impressive, that I'd love to be a kid again, so that I could play with your amazing(!) Spider-Man action figure without earning suspicious looks from people around me. Not that I would care much, hahaha.
Well, quite an honor getting a compliment from such an influential builder like yourself, big fan of your work (and your latest contest btw)
as a matter of fact I don't know why you are not on my favorite builders list, I shall have to fix that asap. You are never too old to play with toys, Lego is after all a toy/artistic medium. I'll admit the kid in me wants to take my Lego action figures and make the fight each other complete with "pew pew" laser sound effects.

"Ultra-Poseable" is an understatement here. Dude, this is 3 times as poseable as the average LEGO action figure!(e.g. Bionicle)
Yes Bioncle doesn't really cut it for me, I wish they made more ball joint systems that work with regular bricks or are smoother and not so robotic,to me having such specific parts can limit creativity. |

I don't plan on making instructions at this time. However, I have it on cuusoo http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/24061 and it is picking up a lot of steam, #2 project for the week. If it gets to 10,000 votes and Lego decides to make it, you could buy your very own set. If it gets to 10,000 and they don't choose to make it. I will release the instructions for free. Either way, vote and one day you can make your own. Thanks!

I won't be able to build a real lego Punisher for quite a while. Money is tight. That's why LDD is great. I can still visualize my models and save them for later. Can't wait for your next model. Didn't you mention a Robocop?
Yeah he is about half complete he is huge though, he is about 36" tall! I have his entire frame built and his head hands arms gun chest abdomen and feet, still have to build his legs, got hung up on the gun popping out mechanism, and lost interest. Might post a WIP pic or two because I dont know when I will get to finish. |

Really though, Five Fingers on each hand (Though it would bump up my articulation count by 6) would make his whole hand way too wide, Like he was wearing a boxing glove. This is a proportional choice and I'm sticking to it, from now on let's just consider 4 fingered hands part of my own personal style, and leave it at that. Thanks for your post! |

Impossible articulation. One of those moments where one goes, "how on earth can Lego bricks do that?!"
One of these days I might reveal my secrets ;)It involves click rotation joints rounded and wedged plates, structural and cosmetic click-hinge joints and flags. All of which move in and out of place with specific poses to keep the insides hidden and/or the poses rigid. Best example, take a close look at the ankle joints and the hips. |

I also really like how you are improving the frame with every build. The introduction of a second ankle joint and a double knee/elbow joint most have improved the poseability dramatically. I also try to improve on mine, unfortunately my current range of figs are just too small for additional joints, but I always manage a subtle improvement with every figure. My only suggestion on your builds is to try to incorporate a tilt (forward and back) waist joint as well as the swivel action. I say that with total respect of your skills, I know it will be a huge challenge at this scale/weight/size. Thank you so much for the mention (below) I am honoured you are an excellent builder, Oh and thanks to Chris also :D. You will always get an honest comment from the Z Master (Chris) which in my opinion is refreshing and always welcome (as you stated below). The best thing about this site is that we can all learn from each other. Outstanding build. OK for your next project how about a villain?
Thank You Sir. Yes that one spider leg on his back annoys me, I didn't catch it until after I had already broken down my photo studio. Next time I photograph I may reshoot those shots. There actually is a tilt Joint at the Mid-torso which is new to the figure design. Thats how he is able to hunch over for those crouched shots. And in some of the straight on shots his back is arched backwards. Actually the spider emblem in the back is structural, when he leans back it pops out giving fuller range of motion, when in place it adds stability to the spine. Any Villain in particular? Venom is the obvious compliment to Spider-Man, but I would probably go a different route (especially since you have already figured out the perfect way to do his tentacles :) |

...That's a bunch of photos... O.O . Well, anyways, nice figure! And I would like you to make Hulk.
Now, THERE is a challenge, HE would have to be huge to scale with the other ones and would probably have some gear controlled joints, also the green palette is somewhat limiting, but that would be quite a project... |

Wow. Your figures are always amazing (no pun intended). Spider-Man has always been my favorite super hero. For your next next figure you should try Ghost Rider. Just make sure his human head doesn't look like Nicholas Cage.
Hahaha! Def no Nicholas Cage, Ghost rider would be cool, but it would really be two projects in one because I'd have to build his bike too! Spawn is definitely on my list to do, but a little further down the line.
Thanks For the suggestions!
EVERYONE PLEASE SUGGEST WHAT ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE! |

M, Mortalswordman is a very good friend of mine, and I know he takes his builds seriously! Throwing a shout out to him makes me realize how much character you have as a master builder! Hats off to you on both the high five, and the build! AND, good luck with any future projects on Cuusoo, and beyond! Chris
You Have a lot of class for looking out for your very talented friend. I also take my Lego pretty seriously, as well as creativity in general, I am a graphic artist in my day job so I know the difference between inspiration and plagiarism, is some times a fine line, I also know the importance of crediting those who came before you. I will always strive to be unique. But "You cannot create art in a vacuum", so I am glad to be so often inspired by so many other's great creations. If one where to take some of my ideas and create something new or improve them, great! That's what this is all about, Happy Building, and Chris You are a stand up guy, comment on my stuff anytime you like. -M

Man, that's a great fig, you should throw a shout out to Mortalswordsman for the eye idea, and maybe to John Fink as well, he's beee producing figs like this in LDD for ages. Great build and shared techniques! Z First off, thanks for bringing this up, you are absolutely right Both Mortal Swordsman and John Fink are pioneers in the super hero Moc Realm as well as two of my favorite builders. SO here is an official THANK YOU! to them and all those who came before me, Thank you for Paving the way. While Mortal and I both used a form of the Barb piece, our techniques are VERY different. I attach mine using a four prong clip piece on a pin plate surrounded by some rather tricky snot building around it. I didn't reference his work directly, (we also use a different part, I use the large bioncle barb, he uses the small minifig one) I also tried every other conceivable part for the eye including tennis rackets and glow in the dark/ trans clear parts. This one just Happened to be the most accurate. I'm glad to be a part of a community where creativity inspires other people to be creative, But I would certainly never bite anyone's creativity directly, there are a lot of great minds here, and we often think alike. :) So To Mr. Swordsman Mr.Fink Mr. Swim, and any other figure builders out there, I am glad we all exist in an environment that fuels creativity, and though we have the same subject matter, I'm glad we all have our unique takes on it. And sorry for any unintentional similarities, they are coincidental, and bound to come up. -M

Thanks for the consistent feedback, Coming from a fellow figure builder your comments are always held in high regard. Chris Melby also reminded me that you are one of the pioneer figure builders on this site, so all credit where credit is due, you came first and you did a great job at it.-M |
