ERIDANUS: Transforming Mega-Titan -BIO-CUP r.#4
2012 Bio-Cup entry Rd. #4 vs. Monarth G.S. He's big. He's bad. He transforms. 'Nuff said.
About this creation
Greetings! The following is my submission to the 4th round of the Bio-Cup. The assignment was (quoting Berial): "The theme for this round is titan over 45 cm with a focus on size and function! ...and remember, the more function and size, the better!" So, I went for the Biggest and most pose-able titan I could create. He exceeded the required height by a foot (30cm). He is also very limber for a big guy as you soon shall see. More specifically, I needed to create a (quoting Berial again): "Transforming Titan - A titan that transforms into something else (a beast, vehicle, etc)." I chose a vehicle mode, specifically, a Battle-Submersible with loose stylings like something out of "the Matrix". I hope you enjoy "ERIDANUS" (e-RID-a-nus) named after the second largest constellation known as the "Celestial River"

This is his Robot Form. He stands 75cm tall (yes, he actually stands quite well)

My main priorities throughout the build were Sturdiness, Dynamic Flexibilty, Solidness and OverallAwesomeness. I didn't want a hulking monster who couldn't move. Besides, this one had to transform as well for the contest.

I used nearly every clicking type hinge connector I own. The shoulders and arms move on many points of articulation. There are no ball joints built to handle joints this size.

He's about half my own height.

Yo, Wazzup?

START THE ONCE-OVER, Head first...

...High Profile...

Neck detail...His head can turn and nod very naturally as well as make the necessary transformation.

...abs of steel...

...front thighs...

...lower legs, front...

...foot and ankle detail...

...From behind...

...Shoulders and back of head...

...his...erm...hind-quarters...

...back of foot...

...Let's Articulate!

Hyaaaaaaaahhh!

His hips in action. The legs are where a lot of the engineering lies. They had multiple revamps to make this giant work.
Here's more detail on the hips which allow the legs to pose in as many ways as a ball joint would, only much, much stronger.

Posing (not Tebowing!)

A Gargabog Splat-wich!

29 1/2 inches (75cm)

BEGIN TRANSFORMATION SEQUENCE!
Turn him face down...

*Werp.werp.werp.werp*

Is that your voice I hear , Optimus??
I will NOT roll out!
Wait, wrong Universe!
(the black thigh armor swings out and reattaches later)

...Bio-MOC Yoga?

...almost there...

...wait for it....

...Spin head around, pop up the headlight, and..

Voila! A Submersible Super-Destroyer!! (main shot)

Shall we go for a swim??

A plankton's-eye view...

...top-rear-view...

...back of sub...

...head of the submersible...

...again from side...

...Ankle mounted mini-turrets...

Eradinus: (to Kalmah) You are unworthy to share my ocean...

Kalmah: I am but a mere Bio-Cup eliminatory round entry, I mean you no harm!
Eradinus: In that case, prepare to be...

...Eliminated! (You didn't think I could post a MOC this destructive without some of my trademark gratuitous splatter, now did you?)

Eridanus- Posed with some old friends of mine (L to R) Evil Flower, D34THBR1NG3R, Gentleman Scarecrow, a M.O. Mini, Clockwork Pegasus, and the MAV-X5 Tomahawk and crew.

BEHIND THE SCENES: While I was waiting for the judges to announce the next challenge, I began making the skeleton of a really big Titan ( I kinda guessed it would be a titan, based on last year's cup).

This was what it looked like. Notice the enormous hands....They're long gone now. Actually very little of this sketch remained in the final MOC. Pretty much everything changed when I began to get serious. It just got me thinking big.

Here was an earlier incarnation of Eradinus, long (hours) and many major revamps before it's final form.

Do I look tough?? C'mon, maybe a little!

Ah, now I can go to sleep! It's finally done!!

Fourth Wall Commentary:
Whew! I got the assignment for this round of the BIO-Cup (make a transforming titan 45 cm or taller), TWO DAYS before I was set to leave on a three week trip to Peru (without my parts!) So, two 16-hour non-stop building sessions later, I finished Eridanus. My Dad and I finished the photo shoot and photoshopping with a literally a couple of hours to spare before we left for the airport. To get Eridanus to stand firm required doubling up the sturdiest joints I could find and use rubber tires on his feet to give him traction. To make him moveable, it required double sets of those joints close together pointing in different directions like a universal joint. A lot of time was spent making him sturdy enough to stand. He's a biggun'! This MOC seriously wiped out a LOT of parts!

My opponent this round of the 2012 Bio-Cup is Monarth GS.

Tell me what YOU personally think of this MOC. I value your opinion sooo...

WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

Quoting toa olympios taylor snowden Woah epic Titan form, not so much on the vehicle mode it just looks like he has been folded up and from you that's kinda disappointing. Oh well not every one is a big hit. You probably would have made a more impressive moc if you thought more about the vehicle mode and based the Titan mode on it. K. :)
A lot of your critique is legit. Honestly, I needed more time to develop the vehicle look. I got the titan to be really big, to pose really well, and to transform successfully. I needed more time to beef up the arms, and greeble up the vehicle mode. I only had 48 hours from the time I got the challenge to when I left the country for the rest of the contest duration. Oh well. The techniques I developed to make strong pose-able joints on this scale were an accomplishment that I am quite proud of. I look forward to seeing what the remaining contestants come up with. I love the Bio-cup. It brings out the best in me, and I will be back if it's back next year. Thanks.

Quoting Berial . Ok, so you shot for size. As I started looking at this, I realized that this creation has very punny arms. "ok" I said, as I though that probably had something to do with the transformation. And so I saw the transformation, and I realized you could have given him some real nice arms and more focus on his humanoid form, since he isn't all that special when transformed. But then I remebered that you also had very little time to build this, so I suppose this is quite an achievement given the small spam of time in wich you built this, so for that I congratulate you! Again in this year you had a great run, and I expect to see you again next year! Keep it up Nate!
Thanks for the encouraging comment, friend! I'm happy with how far I made it and I will definitely compete again and again for as long as this contest goes on! I'm actually trying to start some form of storyline so that I have something to do for a while.

Pretty awesome stuff you got here :) Obviously you sacrifice some of the detail for size, but it's surprisingly possible for such a huge creation! Good job on that :D As for the transforming part, it could have been more exciting but it's very nice, seeing as I feel nothing is sacrificed for the transforming mechanics, which is present in most transforming MOCs. Overall, this guy is just awesome! Not perfect, but he's cool in a way that's very hard to pull off, between the size and the transforming. Nice work and good luck in the contest :)

Thanks for your insights. Obviously, I didn't advance in the Bio-Cup. I think what happened was that I used most of the two days I could build with (Peru trip, long story) engineering the mechanics that made him pose well for a big guy and I didn't have enough time left over to decorate him and tweak the transformer aspects. Give credit to my opponent for making a solid entry and beating me fair and square. That said, I am proud of what I was able to create. I broke through a major size barrier personally and learned a lot from the process. I have considered making a revamp of him that I would be more to my satisfaction artistically, but I am very satisfied with his mechanical aspects. I might just make another mega-titan (or two) using the experience I gained. Thanks for your comments.

The robot is pretty cool, its well built, with cool head and feet and a solid color scheme. However, not only the arms needed more work, but I think the transformation is pretty weak. Its a very nice build, but my vote is for your opponent.

Very cool entry. It doesn't transform that much (well at least not as much as your opponent's), but considered the amount of time you had it's very impressive. I vote for your opponent.

Your duel with Monarth is the one of hardest to vote for this round. Both are impressive and big. But between looking at both titan and both vehicles, in my opinion your opponent looks a tad better. Good luck with the other judges.

Quoting 12Lego Greendude Great job Nathan! It's great to see a titan THAT big with a tremendous amount of detail, and even transforms!
Thanks 'Dude. It is more complex than it may appear. I rebuilt the legs multiple times so it could handle everything else I added to it as it grew. I might add a few more "under the hood" shots when I get home from Peru to show some of the technical aspects of the skeletal system. That`s where the real action is. I was glad at the time to get it photographed at all before I had to catch a plane. What a crunch! Anyways, thanks again!

Quoting Vorred 03 If if the overall proportions of the shoulders looks a bit weird, all the designs you gave him are fantastic! Those feet, and even knees with those Bohrok-pieces! It's also amazing how poseable he still is! Good luck in the Bio-Cup!
Thanks so much, man! It really was a pain to build it XD I had to do a number of things to make him stand, balance, and do dynamic action poses. Btw, to everyone: The build is the most complicated thing I've EVER built! I've never built something this huge and complex. Thanx all for the comments!

Quoting Callan Lord of Fire Wow, if you can make that thing in only two days, you certainly deserve to be in the final round of the Bio Cup. Still waiting for Monarth's entry to see if it deserves top spot of this round, but this would be amazing no matter how long it took you. Good luck to you and Monarth, it's a shame only one of you will be moving on.
Thanks Callan. It was an intense build for sure. I;m looking forward to seeing what MOCs come out of this round. Monarth is a tough competitor (we've faced each other before in the Bio-Cup) Should be a fun weekend around here!

If you let me say this... I prefer the structure with bigger hands (but the ones you used fit better the vehicle mode). Also, I agree with Monarth, the transformation could be better: althought I can see perfectly a submarine machine, it has a bit strange form for one. However, the difference between Monarth and me is that he's a pro-MOCer and he can say that because he can build something at leat equally good... And I can't match even a single one of your creations, so I shouldn't say nothing xDD Anyways, I'm surprised of all his awesomeness on his robot mode, I specially love the head and feet. I'm not good at this kind of MOCs so I can't analyze him properly, but seriously, I'm really amazed. Good luck, my dear, I hope you'll be on the final round again! (P.D: you look some kind of tough, yeah... xD)

Neat titan you've got here. Although the transformation could be better, the titan looks great. I also like the idea of a submersible battlecarrier-thingy. I'll be posting my own entry by Saturday so be expecting that. It's not as large, but I could say it's more complex than this. By all the irony it has quite a few similarities... (This might be a second comment, I think my first one was disapproved.)

Wow that is epic! I especially love the solidly built skeletal structure! Someday when I have the money for a massive collection of parts I want to build mega titans all the time. [Even though I haven't been able to show it with my current works I am really good at constructing large mocs. I just need the chance to prove it.] I wonder what this moc might have looked like with a bit beefier arms.
