Shell Company had to make a very difficult decision for 2013. The sales for its premium S-93 sedan went into a steep decline for the year 2012. Shell needed badly to develop an all-new S-93. But there was a problem since the average age of owners of the S-93 was above 45 years. How to get them to trade-in their old 2011 S-93 for an all-new redesigned 2013 S-93 ? Shell Car Company board of executives decided in the end to take the risk and completely redesign the S-93 for 2013.
About this creation
The decision was very dificult but the redesign was very successful. The new 2013 design kept the most basic S-93 design style elements from 2011 so the car was easily recognizable by old minifigs. An example is the black hardtop and the bottom white line stripe. The point was for old folks to say 'There goes an S-93'. Shell Car Company designers and engineers wanted to avoid a very long or disproportionate car dimensions or something that looked extremely modern.
The length of the new 2013 car is indeed longer if compared from the air with 2011 model. The challenge was however for it not to 'look' longer.
The new 2013 S-93 sedan has an all-new feature: A trunk! This was extremely challenging but in the end it was possible. Notice that the new 2013 model is about the same height as the 2011 model.
The trunk opens and a standard suitcase fits perfectly. Even a spare tire fits inside.
Among other new features is the drivers side mirror with an integrated yellow turning light.
This is definitely my favorite Shell car redesign of all time. Reminds me a lot of Americana. Kind of like what the 1957 Bel Air was to Chevrolet. The red hood seems to combine perfectly with the black hardtop.
I was pleased but surprised at the number of visits the 2011 S-93 had. I didn't expect MOC users to actually like it since it was basically a modified 80's Official lego car. Im sure the redesign will win a lot of fans in MOCPAGES. The proportions overall were perfect.
The engine compartment is one of the reasons I liked this car a lot. The engine is a 4-cylinder Shell Helix engine. All of my previous designs have been 2-cylinder.
The 4 cylinder engine can actually be 'overhauled'. It is not stuck and can be taken out easily A nice feature that increases 'playability'.
The car actually has 'fuses' under the dashboard. Can't get more impressive than that. Again 'playability' in the new model is very high.
The interior has improved from 2011 and has been brought in line with the other newer Shell vehicles.
