Symbols of the Imperial Navy - composed of Kuat, a TIE-Defender, and Grand Admiral Thrawn - is my entry to the My Own Planet contest (2012).

For this contest, I decided to work on a theme and quickly came with the idea of displaying key elements of the Imperial Navy. For the microscale ship, I hesitated between the Interdictor and the TIE-Defender. I finally selected the latter. The minifg almost imposed itself: the famous and genius Grand Admiral Thrawn. Then came the planet. What planet could have been a symbol of the Imperial Navy: Kuat of course, home of the Kuat Drive Yards. But after checking for the Kuat article on Wookieepedia I must admit that I cursed. There is a belt of naval shipyard around the planet and I would have to show it somehow.
The TIE-Defender is my first mini-scale model and I am honestly satisfied with the results. The wings are at the right angle and closely aligned with the central 2x4 plate. The trick here was to use a hammer to connect to the technic part used for the central core. A simple stick is used as connector for the cockpit-core-reactor section.
A front view displaying well the famous shape of the TIE-Defender. Angles of the wings are well respected.
I used a simple chain of 2x1 plates for the shipyard belt but the result is there, I think.
But I can tell you that making a small sphere looking remotely like a temperate planet is a nightmare. My stock of pieces being composed mainly of legacy colors from the 80's or more recent colors from Star Wars sets, I had to borrow colorful pieces from my children and both of them accepted. Happily I offered some Friends Lego to my daughter. ;)
