A colossus whose position in society is a little misunderstood.
Vertigus is one of the strongest and largest among the colossus. Although his powers are limited to only strength, as a colossus can possess naturally kanohi powers, he is a respected colossus among the society. Being strong and an idealistic talker, everyone has given him the nickname "The Liberator". Therefore he is considered a potential challenger to the leadership of the colossus elder Agrotis by those who consider Agrotis too old to be a leader anymore.
However, Vertigus respects Agrotis' wisdom and whatever he has told forward has originally become from the mouth of the elder. Many colossus have whatsoever become ignorant to Agrotis' words as everyone considers him to be simply too old, having ruled over 90 000 years. Vertigus has tried to convince the colossus to regain the deserved respect to their elder, but everyone has turned into supporting him to become the new leader.
In secret, Vertigus works as Agrotis' apprentice and listens to the elder's wisdom in fascination and seeks to learn more. Being on the other side than everyone else thinks he is, Vertigus is in tough position whether to tell the colossus supporting him the truth or remain an apprentice in secret. He wishes to seek a way to stop the tension among the colossus in a non-violent manner. It is hard however, as everyone has their hopes up that one day Vertigus would challenge Agrotis for the leadership and lead the colossus to a new era. Also because the colossus love battling and testing their strength, they prefer to solve things physically in duels.
Frustrated about his situation, Vertigus likes to release his stress by toppling, throwing and breaking large rocks with his strength, which sadly convinces his supporters who see him in action that he prepares for challenging Agrotis. Due to that, Vertigus has the habit of walking into the more dangerous and distant zones among the Comet of Treads, sometimes doing research for the elder or fighting creatures that face him.
Having a less balanced mind than many others, Vertigus' situation makes him question his own motives and brings forward also the consideration of the chance that he would cut his ties with Agrotis and challenge him here and now to make everyone happy except himself and Agrotis, to release his own stress. Although he doesn't like the idea, he still considers it a possibility to solve things, or to make things worse. His headache over the situation may lead him to unconsidered conclusions eventually.
Because of his stress, Vertigus has started hiding from the society to avoid the pressure put on him. It is a temporary solution for him to think things over with Agrotis and bring peace among the colossus. There will eventually come a moment when he just has to act, one way or the other.
Vertigus' signature weapons are his gauntlets which surround his arms. By clenching his fists he can deploy his gauntlets into battle mode, having the right gauntlet turning the wrist into a smooth club and the left gauntlet turning into a sharp-edged club. His fighting style is unusual as he doesn't use his fists, but his wrists to punch others by swinging them horizontally and often finishing with a vertical swing.
Deploying gauntlets into battle mode.
One of my goals was to build Vertigus without having to scramble Red Tide. As you can see, I succeeded! He's just a cm or two shorter than Red Tide, but much bulkier. In other words, he's about 44cm tall.
Well, wasn't this a fun build :D
I chose the song here as I think it matches well with the tension among the colossus between those who support Agrotis and those who oppose him, aswell as the tough situation of Vertigus. You might want to listen to the song again having that in mind.
The category for this Bio Cup's finals was a bit too vague, but I got an idea quite quickly. Having said it over and over, I love building the colossus species I've created long ago, so it was quite ideal to build my best one to date for this round. I've had this guy in my mind for like a year or something and finally got to build him and I couldn't be happier by the result. I always considered him to be an assistant-like character to Agrotis, who supports his leadership and acts according to his will even if he questions the means behind them, as he trusts Agrotis completely. And now he's here.
I'd say the special judging field for this guy is size, considering the number of techniques, ideas and details executed on him. First idea was his arms, which extend by pistons to give space for deploying the weapons. Other was the spiked 'collar' behind his neck. Third and most complex technique used on him was his torso, which was built around a cylinder made of 10 plastic treadpieces and a tread wheel from Skopio XV-1. It's there, believe me, I managed to conceal it well. The cylinder allowed new angles to give for the torsos structure and I love the results. I also wanted to give this guy a slightly barbaric look by placing spikes on his shoulders. The black rings on the spikes turned out to be a nice touch.
I want to wish good luck to my opponents, Gringat and Nick. Here are links to their pages: Gringat Nick V.
Thanks for looking and thanks to the judges and everyone involved with this great contest! It's been a good game.
Nice entry. The size is nice, right in that point where you don't need to struggle too much with your parts. Could be bigger? Yes, but it doesn't bother me much. The design is good, has some nice poportions and the colors scheme is consistent (apart from the dreaded blue pins, wich I'll not consider, sinc eits hard to avoid them nowadays). It could be a bit more polished, though: the way some sections fit is kinda awkward (for example, the hands look kinda loose and the elbows are a little thin). Also, the nice curved flow you pulled of in the whole torso area is kinda broken by the flat upper legs and the upside-down toes(also I'm not so sure about the assymetry). But don't worry, I still think its a great MOC, I'm just being a bit technical. So yeah, to finish it up, here are the notes,: Wow: 4 design: 4 technique: 4 special: 4 total:16. Your best? I don't think so, but surely amongst them.
I think you did very good in this final round. it has size, good color combination, interesting use of pure bionicle parts and application of interesting techniques in the head, legs, arms and even the back.
Wow factor: 5
p.s. Do not mind if you get less likes. Bottom line , the judges who are objectives seem to like yours.
While its general complexion might remind some of your previous works like Rakas or Agrotis (hunched neck, broad shoulders, thin waist, long arms, digitigrade legs are all staples of many of your characters), and the theme is very close to the recent ECRU, its size and engineering bring it on a different level. It is certainly among your best MOCs. Wow- 4, Technique- 4, Design- 4 Special (size)- 4 for a top-rate score of 16/20. Congratulations, not many builders I know could score more than this with this year's system. I don't think I could.
I like it

Thats so freaking big! Love the parts usage! Fantastic!
You've truly outdone yourself this time, Monarth! Everything about it just looks so organic yet mechanical. The entire collar structure on his back was a brilliant idea and I love it. The head is exceptional as well. This has a strong chance of winning! Good luck!
I don't know what to say here... Althought I don't want to overcharge more this page with comments like 'EPIC!', 'Cool' or 'Awesome!', I honestly don't know how to analyze this enormeous guy properly. So sorry, but you'll have another 'AWESOMELY EPIC COOLNESS!!' here. I think you will win this year... This little guy is going to be hard to defeat.
