Awesome! Very original idea, certainly a well deserved MO round winner and a fine candidate for your most popular build :-) Lots of very nice solutions and details. Great work!
Thanks, I'm still really pleased with this one. Think it came together perfectly; and I still hold that the topic was really hard to do in Lego. |

Congratulations on advancing David! I loved the clean, classic spy vs. spy look and think you overcame the issue of showing a set-up and payoff all in one build really nicely. Didn't realize you were a Brit until I saw the references below to a ZX Spectrum (48k with rubber keys?) and the Beano! That means that 1/4 of the last 16 is British, but unfortunately you and I will face each other as will George G and Nick Barrett - at least we can say that 1/4 of the last 8 will be British too! Well done and good luck - lets have the categories now! |

Though choice, your opponent dit great with his more posable figures but eventually my vote goes to you, because I see a more recognizable typical spy vs spy thing here, great job.
Thanks, I was biting my nails there as Mike made a great MOC. Can't have been easy judging. |

Fantastic representation of the classic comic! Mike's interpretation of the theme was very original, though, and his build, though a bit simplistic, earned my vote because of its expressive yet stylized characters and clever story. It looks like Sebeus is once again the tiebreaker, so good luck!
By expressive style I read you like Mike's oh so expressive grey spy ;). Thanks for the comments. |

Ever since I've seen your comment about a Jet Set Willy MOC, I've had the music going round and round in my head, both the ZX Spectrum and orchestral versions. Aaaaagh! We must perform a quirkafleeg! (I think that was one of the rooms)

Brilliantly done my friend. It looks just like the comic strip. If the judges are looking for purity then you got me dead to rights! At least now I can collapse for a moment and let my cracked little mind finish melting into a puddle of plastic goo!
Thanks Mike, having just gone through the same week of Lego torture I have, I knew you'd appreciate how hard it is to get those spies right. |

Hi Mr. Smith. I have a homework assignment. I need to ask 5 people who they think Jesus Christ is.
So.... Who do you think He is?
An infinitely flexible concept within a reformist Jewish ethical philosophy, but that's just a reflexive answer, and more an answer to the question what is Jesus?, which is probably more interesting than who is Jesus? |

Ah, the ZX Spectrum.... happy days. The comic-strip 2D-ness of this is what makes it great.
I was really worried people wouldn't get the 2D design decision. BTW I've been toying with the idea of a Jet Set Willy MOC for a while now. |

Great fun, instantly recognisable both as Spy vs Spy and a David Alexander Smith creation too. This took me way back, 25 years, to playing the computer game on a friend's Commodore 64. I like how you've done the spies' pointy faces and the magnet is simple but totally effective. I think that the thinnes of this vignette works well as the cartoons are quite 2D too.
Hey David, my point of reference was playing this on the ZX Spectrum. The aim was to keep it close to a line drawing, which was precisely why I kept it thin throughout. It is kind of bizarre making Lego work against innate sculptural inclination, but in this case I think the way to go.

Great work, David. Instantly recognizable. I knew what I was looking at before I read the title of the MOC. Really takes me back to my childhood, (you seem to have a knack for that). The spies look great, especially the black spy, and not an easy thing to pull off with LEGO. Also, a great job making your MOC look like the picture. Very accurate. Good luck in the MO.
Thanks Tim, that was my aim, to really get that Spy vs Spy feel in Lego. It is strange being a Brit, Mad Magazine has no cultural capital for me, but for so many people on this site it has as much significance as say the Beano ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beano) for me. I wanted to do justice to those memories, so your comment really made me happy. |

Phenomenal! The whole thing's a brilliant piece of art, but the shaping of the black spy really stands out. Amazing work, you nailed the right vibe here.
I think the actual style of Spy vs Spy is the hardest part of this category. It really was tough to get a coherent setting for the figures that felt like it belonged to the Spies' world rather than a Lego world. |
