Updated Design "Big Red" 2010 v 2012

About this creation

I was bored and needed a new project idea so I looked back at one of my older designs, chosen entirely at random, and attempted an update using new(er) ideas and building techniques.

The Chosen concept was "Big R.E.D."

NOTES:

Big Red started out life as an experiment in the use of ball joints. The design was somewhat squat and the proportions always seemed off somehow.

Last week, in fact just before I did all the Classic Space stuff, I'd picked out an old design (the oldest in my folder marked "assorted mecha") with the intentions of giving it a makeover.

After a week of sitting on the idea I finally had a couple of hours to toy with the design, but rather than just redress the original, I decided instead to imagine how I would build the design from scratch today.

The concept I applied to the original was that this was a privately own rescue/hero archetype, similar to the concepts of Thunderbirds, Iron-man or Big O. So my thinking this time was it had to look more dynamic, try to keep the "solid" feel of the original, and give it a clean yet mechanised look. The open cockpit in versions 1 and 2 is similar to that used by Devid Vll, so a partial credit is in order. I've been trying for ages to move away from my tiny feet designs. While they do make the CyberAgents quite distinctive, they don't really sell "solid", so this time I went with a more Sugegesa style foot. I think the tapering, bellbottom style legs coupled with the thin waist and understated arms and shoulders give it an anime vibe.

The gun was added because, well, I just wanted him tooled out for combat situations, like fighting renegade robots or mutant monsters - the usual.

I'm going to add some fiction later but I need to brainstorm some ideas first.

Quoting Thomas Z. I like this! A total remake, and it turned out pretty awesome! Kinda like what I did with one of my first uploaded MOC(just didn't have the time to upload the finished remake yet).
Well when you do I'm going to be one of the first to comment. I love your stuff, you are a real inspiration and if ever I tackle a larger mech design I'm certainly going to be using your designs for reference.

Quoting LTE MOCer I really like the MK III. it's nice to see the discrepancies in the build too. You've obviously gotten a lot better at building.
Thank you, showing the progression was important in this particular instance as it was a "reinvention". With a previous design as inspiration it was important for me to give a reference point for comparison. Plus it was a cheeky way of getting people to take a look at some of my older MOCs. ;p
