Solo Space and Hostile Environment Exploration Craft.
About this creation
The double Dave classic space contest was just too tantalising to ignore. I've worked on this to the limit my marriage will tolerate. I knew from the start I wanted to make a space craft because the playabilty limit of such is endless. It needed a sturdy cockpit and I wanted the vessel to accommodate both a Spaceman and his buggy. Blue and grey with yellow glass were the original space colours so they would be the ones. I didn't want to stay exactly in the original style, I wanted something more up to date but with a nod to the halcyon days. Most pieces used were available then but probably not all. The pieces I felt were most needed were the yellow glass, the red and green wing lights, something with a logo emblazoned upon it and the small twin laser cannon. The piece count? 100, so this would have been the most expensive of the pocket money toys but come on, you get a spaceship!!!!! Other features are the eight multi-directional aft mounted thrusters, landing ski and two storage hooks.

There is a lot of evidence of classic space Lego throughout Gipswijk, but I couldn't use a fair bit of it.

I found an unused grey slope logo brick! yay.

Lovely opening mechanism on this cockpit.

Stashed buggy.

Unstashed buggy.

The sides come off quite easily, revealing a functional interior.

One man and his buggy.

Alternate A, hardly inspiring. Kind of a mobile ack-ack thing, I guess.

I reckon the imperial war machine saw this and got the idea for an AT-AT. Kind of.

The first 43 pieces

The second 57

Although the max 100 pieces, it didn't take long to reassemble, thankfully.

Right, I think that'll do, I'd better become a better husband and father for a while now, hope y'all like it.

A large and complicated ship for less than 100 pieces! I like how it looks as though the ship is meant to plough through the atmospheres of unexplored planets. The stumpy wings will just help to control it and the skid on the front will help to absorb any dodgy landings by the pilot. Plus you’ve got a buggy on the back for after a successful touch down. 10 I love how you’ve made the engines on the main build from old, 1970s arms. The big feet on the walker would be good for sliding across space-swamps. I like how you’ve used the same canopy setup as the main model but on a vehicle with totally different function. I can just imagine the second alternative coming in to land and then running along on its little legs. 9 A very swooshable ship. I like how the windscreen is small (to resist the heat of re-entry) but that the whole roof of the ship hinges up to gain access to the pilot. The buggy is the sort of thing that Lego only put on their bigger CS sets and adds a whole other world of play and lunar exploration. I think that weak point in the design is that the sides and back are held on with just a few studs and would be prone to falling off. 7 I like how this ship pushes the CS look along, with its narrow, vertical windscreen, chunky fuselage and single piece wings. I also like how this ship uses SNOT techniques but in a way that sits well with the original Classic Space aesthetic. 9 Total score 36. |

Design: I like this one a lot, because it captures the essence of function found in the larger sets, i.e. the transportation of smaller exploration vehicles by larger vehicles, but does it in a small set.
9
Piece Selection: Both alternatives show real creativity.
9
Playability: Great play value, with the fly out and drop off potential of the buggy and spaceship combo. Some clever building skills on show, which were really never used by CS, but from my experience would hold up under play conditions.
9
CS Factor: Reminds me very much of the 84 range of sets with some modern building twists added. Great stuff.

This is a good build. I like that the rover is connected to the back. Also, the angles on the main ship are nice. I like the alternates too. The big "feet" on the walker are neat. Part usage is good too. |

wow! ok, the ship is so original, I never seen anything quite like it, you really belong here tris, the dispersed space printed parts in your city makes me salivate, and you should install landing platforms in it, I will do so on alta-5, it will look very good! |

WOW!! Very clever build in all aspects. Clearly inspired by the CS spirit. The two alternatives are greatly made. |

This is one of the more swooshable CS models in the contest. I like how the buggy attaches to the ship. |

Excellent. You succeeded in making a highly playable, versatile spaceship that's not at all sketchy and it looks great. All in 100 pieces! Bravo. |

Lovely builds here ... These are for sure my favorites of the competition so far. These reminds me a lot of vintage space, and i do se a slight approach towards modern classic space without ruining the original concept. I love these !!! :) |

Wow, that's a great NCS design. You got the Classic Space look very well and the combination with a lot of SNOT design is very cool! The seperation function is very clever and the alternatives are awesome. Great job! :-)) |
