This is a tiller ladder truck I built based on tiller ladder 5 of the FDNY. Unfortunately I had to take apart my rear mounted aerial ladder to build this, but these trucks are more maneuverable on tight streets and corners which I decided would be better on the tight curves of the LEGO road baseplates in my town! For those of you who are unfamiliar with tiller ladders the wheels on the trailer steer as well, allowing them to maneuver city streets with greater ease.
I based the length of the truck on the ladder that was going to be mounted on it. I tried to make sure the ladder was more realistic on this truck than on my aerial truck.
The rear of the truck includes space for additional ladders as well as space for accessories such as traffic cones on the gray part below the lights.
I made stickers mimicking those on the rear of FDNY tiller ladder 5, including a New York State license plate like the one that reads "5 TRUCK" on the actual truck.
All FDNY that I have seen have this sign or a similar one on each side. This one mimics the one I saw on truck 5 in pictures.
I also tried to get the stickers right for the cab of the truck. The 9 is from the Emerald Night set.
A detailed view of the front of the cab.
The ladder turns and technically raises, but the hydraulic pistons on the side don't slide well, and don't allow for a realistic range of motion. I prefer to keep the ladder down, and the tool boxes on the top of the trailer keep the ladder in place.
There are three ladders stored in the rear for when my firefighters need to get off the ground!
Thanks for checking this one out! Let me know what you think, I'm really proud of this one!
