“I am Gandalf, and Gandalf means ME!”
About this creation
Gandalf the Grey is my entry into the Middle Earth LEGO Olympics.

No matter what ‘The Grey’ thinks, as a Bionicle Build, my ‘Grey’ is really an updated, more advanced version of my ‘White'!

He has much more overall flexibility with a head that can rotate and a waist that can bend and twist!

But, all this new build complexity really does, it just enables him to become…
Bent Over With Perplexion!!!

Yes, Wizards can become as confused as dwarves, when it pertains to making monumental decisions like how long to wait between beard trimming and restyling!

Oh course, that’s understandable when the name of your barber shop is ….
Smaug’s Arkenstone Barber Shop!

Anyhoo, Gandalf’s new stylish beard design IS most becoming, don’t you think?!

So, new beard style or not, in ‘The Hobbit’, Gandalf is simply
‘The Grey’, having yet to transform into ‘The White’.
But, every now & then, he does tune into the Power of…

Now, if he could just remember to hold his staff in his
illuminated hand, he may just yet, outshine all those dwarves!

Ah, ha… looks like he’s conjuring up some secret magical power?!
Hey Nori, we’d like a peek too… Get Out Of The Way!

So… What IS this so-called ‘Magic’?!

Tah… dah… Have NO fear!
Looks like Nori IS revealing the unknown to us all!

Yes, ‘The Grey’s’ cape is really black! It only turns grey when
‘The Grey’ puts it on!
(Well, not really… I just didn’t have any grey felt fabric!
Hey, photo-editing is my ‘MAGIC’!)

Tah… dah… more SECRETS revealed!

Yup, for those of you with an accute eye for detail… this IS the first picture before it was subjected to my ‘MAGIC’. I did not have several bricks in the correct colors to build the Wizard Hat. And, of course, the intro picture was seriously lacking in background atmosphere to really use it without a bit of ‘MAGIC’! The wooded background is a picture my brother-in-law took in, I think, Wisconsin, on an Autumn birding/hiking vacation. I actually had to use even more ‘MAGIC’ to make my sister-in-law disappear from the surroundings!

4th Wall:
#1
I have been building mostly Bionicle builds of some of ‘The Hobbit’ characters.
The others can be found in my ’Tribute to Tolkien’ Folder.
#2 The only System Hobbit build I have built so far is that of
The Hobbit: Beorn’s Hall.
#3 I was not sure how a Bionicle build would be received in this contest, so I tried to give my presentation a comical and informative photo-editing bent.
#4 I hope everyone realizes that the extra characters portrayed in this little narrative are just, well… extras! They’re for presentation atmosphere and are not to be included in the judging.
#5 The new builds are Gandalf the Grey and that funky barber pole with a replica of the Arkenstone on the top!
Thanks… and ENJOY! ;)

Quoting Raviel . While the judges may not think this, it's sure an original entry!
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Your own entry moved me and I have now written you a comment! :)

Quoting Ru Corder I love the wackiness of your builds so much! While almost everyone else gets so bogged down in making super clean realistic builds, here's Stovetop just doing her own artsy thing :P You're awesome!
Yup... I know what you mean about 'getting bogged down in making super clean realistic builds'! That's what I've actually been doing... well almost... for The Davids' Classic Space contest! It's taking me FOREVER! Thanks, Ru for the nice comment! :)

Quoting cyberfrank 2010 gandalf...bionicle? lol, ok, you really know how to twist! lol, I would have liked a lego background better, but, you performed the effect well, funny! happy new year!
If I even make it to the next round, I'll do a System build. Just wanted to continue the bio/Hobbit theme I had been doing already! Thanks! :)

Quoting Cody G Very nice! Have you considered brick-built faces instead of masks? I think that you'd be able to experiment more with facial hair that way.
Funny you should mention this idea, 'cuz I've kinda come to an end in building with my favorite masks! I've built a couple bios without masks and yes, it's a great thought and I'm considering. HNY! :)

Thanks! The Hobbit Dwarves seemed like a fair enough number of characters to keep me building for a bit! :)

Quoting Michael Kringe Ah, another of your famous Bionicle MOCs! I have to admit that I would have missed something if you had posted a "normal" LOTR MOC, just like everyone else, hehe. Awesome Gandalf! Good luck for the contest! :)
Yes, Michael... it was the contest that made me get moving on 'The Grey'. I had had the pieces sitting around for awhile and as I replied to one of your comments on another of my builds, I just could not seem to get motivated to build him?! Turns out, I had not worked out the hat design very well and was missing a few dk blue grey pieces! Hey, but there was MAGIC! :)

Quoting Parrington Levens The capes are such a great touch :) The hobbit was just fanatstic, I thought more entertaining than the LOTR movies. So many different monsters they encounter.
Thanks! That is what I have heard too from others... haven't seen it myself yet! :)

Quoting David the Fire Ninja Jedi Nice! Too bad Lego doesn't make large capes like that!
Thanks! Yup, I believe the only cape similar in size is that of Darth Vader in the old SW/Technic set. :)

Quoting Nick Barrett Instantly recognizable, and he has a very cool hat. Happy New Year Topsy! :-)
Thanks! It's attached on both sides of his head with a #3 grey techinc axle w/stop that goes thru the eye socket on that bionicle head! That's why his hat has ear flaps! (If it hadn't been for that bit of luck he would not have been able to wear it.) Happpy New Year to you too, Nick! :)

Quoting Gale Winthrope Entertaining and magical as always! Topsy, if I may be so bold, it seems to me that you are getting much better. The form of Gandalf here seems to support that. Great work, and thanks for the laugh, I needed that. :) Good luck to you!
Thanks, Gale! And congrats on your 2nd placing in the Dec BCBS! I voted for you! :)

Quoting Crimso Giger Tolkien characters in a Bionicle form... this is an original concept ! And the result is very nicely done - and anyway Gandalf, grey or white, is the coolest :-D

Quoting David Alexander Smith I love the way you never feel constrained by the natural order of Bionicle. Gandalf looks just perfect, and a bit of photo-editing helps things along. I urge you to consider a Fabuland version of Middle Earth in round 2 ;) The Duplo Mines of Moria for round 3?
Funny you should mention these other theme lines! After posting my Xmas card page I got to thinking about next year and was toying with the idea of a Belville/Technic Nativity. And then what should appear.... Gio's Belville Nativity! You know... I just may go with that Fabuland idea! :)
