3-Axle Train Bogie/Truck with XL Motor
A combination of techniques to create a motorized bogie/truck for trains.
About this creation
This is a combination of several designs, mainly an XL Motor design found here by Nathaniel Brill and the 3 Axle Trucks by Mike Kollross that I am so fond of using.
This design, used primarily for steam locomotives, will give you plenty of pulling power, albeit not much speed. This is also used mainly in tenders, with a 5x5 gap in the tender that goes around the XL Motor. Here is a good example, also by Nathaniel Brill. The tender sits around the motor and on top of the bogie/truck. The bogie/truck uses the motor as a pivot point. I have not seen a good tutorial/LDD file for something like this, so I created one. Enjoy!

The underside, which shows the gearing.

The following is a small step-by-step tutorial showing how to make one of these. The LDD file is also included to aid in recreating this design.

*Twitch's Remarks*
I wanted to reiterate that this is a combination of designs that I have seen, and merely mashed them together. The originals are NOT my design, nor did I have anything to do with designing the originals. I am merely creating a tutorial to show how this is done so others may have a guide (since reverse-engineering from a completed picture can be difficult).

Quoting SuperSpy X I am making a large diesel with two of these (slightly modified). I'll leave you a comment when it's done so you can see it!
Sweet! I look forward to it.

Quoting Paul Beach A design similar to this would be great for building six axle diesels! Thank you for commenting on my stuff.
Yep, not a problem. There are several other things that can be done with this design (as people here on MOCpages have done), but this gives the most power to the wheels. Adding any extra axles/gears induces friction, which will result in power loss. Although that loss may be trivial with something this small, it is the concept.

I think I realize your idea. Not the way I would have tackled it though. Id prefer the trucks be physically attached to the tender rather than just sitting there pushing the train along as a disguise.

Quoting Trevor Young In the pictures of yours, the motor ISNT the pivot point as it is anchored to the truck by the 2x2 w/ vertical pin. With that, the motor isnt able to pivot
The motor itself is the pivot point, you just have to put it inside a 5x5 cage. At the top of the page is a link showing that.

Quoting Trevor Young Wait nevermind. I see it now.
I provided a link at the beginning showing how the XL Motor itself is the pivot point. I will be using this design in the tenders that I am designing for jd davis, so when those are uploaded hopefully it will also help clarify.

Very nice. But how do you actually attach this to the frame? I dont see any pivot axle besides the one going to the motor and theres no room underneath. Please explain, I could find this useful.

Quoting jd davis good job there twitch this will help me in my newest project, a steam turbine. all you have to do is shove who knows how many into the mammoth's tenders
I figured two for each tender, giving a total of four. My research showed that people that use just two of these are able to haul a LOT. Granted, they do not go as fast as the passenger locomotives, but they definitely get the job done. I imagine that four of these will do very nicely.
