This is a recreation based on the 1975-1976 Hess Toy Trucks which are childhood favorites of mine.
I have worked diligently to recreate the "toy" look in the traditional dark green, red and yellow livery. A reference picture has been included for comparison.(www.hesstoytruck.com) Real Hess Trucks still feature that color combination despite the toy’s switch to white and a brighter green.
In order to closely mimic the original toy trucks; it does not have a typical fifth wheel because the electrical line for the headlights runs through it to attach to the battery box on the trailer. It also has a basic interior with few details, the doors do not open, nor does the hood. All such details could be incorporated if the correct dark green pieces were available, however the original toys do not have those features.
This is a full tractor and trailer featuring a flatbed trailer hauling a load of barrels. Those barrels conceal the battery box powering the headlights and taillights. The rearview mirrors are painted chrome because those parts are not available in chrome and they are chrome on the original toys. I have never painted LEGO pieces before, and hated to do so now, but I deemed it absolutely necessary.
The decals are custom made by me and feature the standard green and white logo except on the tractor where the green and yellow on white logos are installed.
Cool idea, I loved Hess trucks as a kid! Sadly I only ever got one, as I had too much LEGO to accommodate a large collection like some of my friends had, but it sure was cool. Great job on replicating this, the lights and such are a nice touch and the cab looks very close to the real thing. How come you went for a different trailer though? Anyway, greet work on this!
Wow this is a fantastic idea as well as a beautiful model. The lights are icing on the cake. This reminds me of the Hess tanker truck my dad brought home from a business trip. I remember him turning on the lights when he gave it to me it was magical! Lego would be dumb not to research this one . I saw the last comment so I will be sure to check it out on CUUSSOO! Excellent
