Dragonfly Heavy Attack Gunship
This new gunship is one of the most advanced in the world, and will be phasing out our existing helicopter gunships.
About this creation

The Dragonfly Heavy Attack Gunship is a revolutionary attack aircraft designed to counter the recent advances in point-defense technology. As in recent decades active protection systems have become increasingly prevalent, our helicopter gunships have found themselves having to fire larger and larger amounts of munitions simultaneously to guarantee hits. Obviously, we realized that this was inefficient in the long run and that alternative means of destroying enemy armor needed to be looked in to.

One area that we had looked into was hypersonic scramjet missiles that would be fast enough to circumvent APS defenses, but we decided that this would not work due to the missiles having insufficient time to accelerate to the required speeds because of their close starting proximity to their target. Because of this, we decided to use railguns as the primary weapon system as all known current defense systems offer little defense from their high-speed sabot rounds.

While initially we wanted to mount these weapons on a updated version of one of our many helicopters, tests showed that helicopters were simply unable to use railguns due to their high recoil. We then looked into mounting them on either our Marauder dropship or the GA-15 Basilisk (which wasn’t really needed since the existing Basilisk models already had a 35mm coilgun) due to their ability to handle the recoil, but the final products simply looked ugly, which is something the higher-ups in our government simply do not tolerate. Because of this, a entirely new aircraft was born: the Dragonfly Heavy Attack Gunship.

The Dragonfly is a medium-sized VTOL designed to support our forces by providing devastating firepower to decimate the enemy ground forces. The Dragonfly is built around its large fusion reactor, which can simultaneously provide power for all its needs without worry of compromise. The 3 primary thrusters (one is on the bottom of the hull and provides the VTOL capability, the two others are mounted on the sides and can spin 360) are all quite powerful and can accelerate the Dragonfly to speeds up to 513 mph, and there are two secondary thrusters for extra maneuverability and recoil compensation. Like all other of the Conglomerate’s manned aircraft, the Dragonfly is optionally manned, so it can still keep flying even if the pilot is compromised, or can even be used as UAVs if needed.

Of course, while all of this is nice and all, most of you are probably wondering by now if we were ever going to talk about the Dragonfly’s excessive armament, AKA the entire point of the Dragonfly’s existence. Well, luckily for you, we are! Obviously, the primary focus of our newest aircraft was its two massive 40mm railguns, which can provide adequate firepower to destroy all but the most heavily armored targets. This is why it also mounts 8 anti-armor missiles, which can be fire en masse to guarantee destruction of their target. Of course, when the railguns are fired, the dragonfly has to be flying with all thrusters at full reverse thrust, and even then the recoil slams the aircraft causing massive deceleration. Because of this, rapid-fire capability is not an option for the Dragonfly.

For additional combat capability, the standard 15mm rapid-fire coilgun is mounted below the cockpit and there are laser projectors mounted 4 all-around coverage against incoming threats and for burning enemy infantry and other soft targets.

Just a few shots of the landing gear...

A comparision photo to two of our older aircraft.

Thanks to Lego4Life for the great idea for the Dragonfly's name.

Quoting joshua vance can you add the LDD file? i want to get a closer look at the structure of this thing
I'm sorry, but due to people stealing my designs when I put up a download, I only share files with my closest friends.

Quoting Hayden Johnson If only it was built IRL...
No offense, but if this is all you are going to say, I would prefer you simply didn't comment at all. I'm a college student and simply can't afford to spend hundreds of dollars on Legos anymore. LDD is a way I can continue my passion of building with Legos in a far cheaper and more mobile form.

Quoting Green helmet spanish AFOL Wow! I know nothing about these aircrafts but the design is very interesting. Small and heavily armed. Have you thought about a personnel carrier dropship/gunship using one of these designs as a base model? Congratulations.
First off, thanks! Anyway, I thought about it, but the turbine on the bottom of the aircraft is a deal breaker (and necassary, it couldn't fly without it) and I already have a pelican dropship clone. That was a good suggestion though.
