UES Thunder Child: TR-MK1-G-1
The UES Thunder Child. In all her glory.
About this creation
Name: UES Thunder Child
Length: 34 Metres (100 studs)
Width: 12 Metres
Armament: 10 Point Defence turrets, two Rail-guns, 2 Torpedo Turrets, 2 Twin Barrelled Heavy Orbital Offense guns, 1 Thunder G.U.N Cannon (Retracting), 2 Twin Barrelled Quick Cycling Heavy Lasers, 1 Reinforced Ram
Crew: 1 Captain, 1 Helmsman, 1 Navigation, Tactics and Communications Officer, 1 Gunnery officer, 1 Shields Manager, 2 Engineers, 1 Auxiliary crewman, 1 Shipboard AI.
Cargo: Up to six Bloodhound Fighters, or One SNERP and two Bloodhound fighters.
Engines: 2 Kavrakathium Reality Distorting Light-speed Drives, two custom built Svolovarnite Sub-light reactors. These are mounted para-axially in a one plus one configuration.
Operational History (Brace yourselves): The Thunder Child was commissioned privately by Captain James Arcan after his design was rejected by the UES Admiralty. Thus she was given the G-1 designator as opposed to the military “M” or “S.” She saw a lot of action in the Kranaxian/Human war and won many battles. She was present at the Fall of Earth and saved the last civilian transport from three Kranaxian destroyers, suffering heavy damage in the process. She then escaped and fought at the battle of SIS-13, where she saved the crew of the UES Courageous Charger. Her next major action was at the Battle for Earth, where she rammed into the Kranaxia, deploying UES forces inside the giant vessel. She was piloted away from the doomed enemy ship moments before it exploded, only just achieving minimum safe distance. She went on to lead many raids against Kranaxian remnant forces, and played a decisive role in the destruction of the Kranaxian vessel Executioner’s Axe. She wears the black and grey livery of the UES Home Fleet in addition to her standard White and Blue. She remains to this day the most decorated vessel in the entire United Earth Space-force.

Well, I’m no Dan Jassim (though he’s been a big inspiration), nor am I Chris Giddens (another huge inspiration), but I think I’ve built myself a fine vessel. (Sorry, no Fleebnorks)

A general overview to get us started

One of two main engine modules

The rear hangar open. I worked hard to sort this out.

The floor of the hangar drops down, and acts as a ramp when the ship sits on her landing gear

A SNERP in the hangar, but we’ll get to that later

The rail-gun. Now, Rule of Cool superseding logic here: Each black barrel is an individual laser cannon, which then locks down to form the rail-gun. (One on each side)

The Twin Barrelled Quick Cycling Heavy Lasers (One of these on each side)

Four Point Defence turrets protecting the bridge

Point defence turret. One of ten.

The bridge. Again, we’ll get to that later

Greebles! Woot Woot!

Torpedo turret and lower cannons

Rear turrets and shield projector

Forward turrets.

Thunder G.U.N Cannon. Damn Straight it folds up. Sort of based on the MAC Cannons from Halo, as seen on the Pillar of Autumn and the Forward Unto Dawn. They fire shells of Generally Unified Navrathium (G.U.N), which are acidic, pass through energy shields, and detonate. Rule of Cool FTW.

Docking Hatch

Open. It’s not an airlock, because there’s and Atmoshield (Atmosphere Shield) that keeps atmosphere in but lets people out.

Underside. I know the picture is only average, but you try holding 3.5kg in your left hand and taking a photo with the camera in your other hand.

Secondary and tertiary thrusters.

Escape pod. One on each side, and they can hold three men each. The torpedo turrets double as two man escape pods.

Captain’s Cabin. Complete with desk, bookcase, and bed. All with wood panelling

Spartan interior of the pods

Escape pod.

Pretty Spartan Interior

Bridge

The pit. Shields and guns are controlled from here

The helm and Captain’s stations. Yup, the whole ship can be flown by one man

Captain’s quarters again, ladder to bridge, and gangway to the rest of the ship

The guest cabin and inter-deck hatch

The rear hangar without any top.

Forward observation deck without the trans-blue shroud

The decks separate like that

Upper deck

Mess hall

Crew cabins. Hot-bunking is necessary, and those orange crates are crew storage space.

There is the holo table, Nikita’s (the AI) main matrix. Also visible is the Cook-O-Matic. A beautiful blend of oven, stove and deep fryer. Nothing else is needed.

Chairs and tables. For playing cards. Or talking

The Main Deck. The business deck

Ramp, retracted

Spartan Restroom. Contains shower and toilet, like in a campervan.

Staging room/Armoury. This room is the messiest.

Ramp, extended

The med-bay. The bed “Retracts”

The whole thing pops out like this

Oh no! The captain is ill! He has a slight wheeze. Never mind that dying marine, treat the Cap!

Oh, I forgot to show that those doors open. They all do.

Consoles. They don’t do anything, except make it look more spaceshipy

Pointless pic of the docking hatch again

The engine rooms! Full of greebly goodness. Maintained by the boys in blue. And grey. (Churchie)

Closer look at those greebs over on the far wall.

Extra Vehicles! Gotta love ‘em:
Here’s the Recon Bike.

Rear

Weird turning FTW!

Side

The Surprisingly Nimble Exploration/Recovery Pod (SNERP)! I love this thing. It’s getting its’ own page.

Epic landing gear

Cocky pilot recently transferred from the “Grand” Army of the “Republic” (Palp’s private army)

Great big landing gear. Mmmmmmmm!

Boarding ramp. Double hinged!

Forward Hangar. Stores two Bulldog class fighters

Seen here

And here

The whole crew: Left to right: Engineer, Shieldsman, Helmsman, Nikita (Sologram (Solid-Hologram)), Captain Arcan in dress uniform, Nav/Tac/Com Officer, Auxiliary crewman, Gunnsman, Engineer.

4th Surface.
This ship (SHIP) was originally built to be in the Star Wars universe, but then I realized that it was only ever going to be 100 studs long, which, as I’ve said is only about 34 metres. Even by modern naval standards, Thunder Child is a glorified patrol boat. So I checked out numerous Lego shipwrights, and most of them did one of two things. Either they created their own universe or they built in Microscale (Kelso). Seeing as I hate Microscale and I don’t have the bricks to build a Star Destroyer in Minifig scale, I created my own universe. But seeing as I’m writing a book, I’m not going to give too much away. If you’re interested in it, leave me a comment and tell me.

To the actual MOC herself: I love her. She’s beautiful. Chris Giddens inspired the shape of her bow (his Vanguard starship has a similar style of bow.). Her bridge is somewhat inspired by the Star Destroyers and Super Star Destroyers (the recessed pit with two crewman in it), but is mostly my design. If I had to build her all over again, I’d ensure she had some more white plates, and I’d probably giver some more hangar space. Other than that, I’m pretty happy with her.

Oh! I forgot to point out: She's named after the HMS Thunder Child, the Torpedo Ram that featured in the famous novel, The War of the Worlds.

Thanks for viewing my pride and joy. Be merciful with the criticism, I started her when I was seven.

*Update* Thunder Child now has her own Google Chrome Theme:

Quoting J. Murphy I love it. I totally agree with the idea of creating your own universe to work in. It's so fun to make ships big enough to accomodate the minifigs, but small enough to build and and handle. I think you've struck a great balance. Awesome work!

Quoting Michal Hennel Splendid :D Firstly , I like the amount of rooms and corridors that you were able to put in such narrow and long hull. Spartan design looks not poorly, but realistic. Rear part of ship is impressive , cannon and engine design reminds me Dreadnought ships form World War II , which are most massive warfare ships ever made. Also , none of parts essential for mothership were absenting. I look forward for more creations from You :D

Quoting Alex Sonny All of your creations are great, but this one claims the crown and is now my favourite ship design. Wanna know why? 1: the sheer scale, it's huge! Sure, the colours aren't really consistent, but I'm guessing you were running out of pieces at the end. 2: the front shape. The dome on the top and the big bulky lower compartment give the sense of complete imbalance and that's why I love fiction space designs. 3: interior, interior, interior. Something my creations often lack. These are just three main points, this is perfect overall.
Thank you. Thank you very much. I was sort of running out of parts towards the end, but I think it turned out well.

Quoting jack kenyon The first time I saw this, I didn't comment, now I regret it. This is a fantastic ship, the design is very retro. It is huge as well, I like how it is a fairly small ship in real life, with such cramped quarters, but is so big as a model. That is why minifig scale is so great.
Thanks! Yeah, IRL the Child would be pretty small, but compared to other UES ships, she's relatively large. The UES works on large numbers of ships of maintainable size. Also, cost. The UES can't afford to build massive ships. Anyway, thanks for commenting.

Quoting Sir Seamus Morrison This is so amazing! How long did this take?
Well, technically 7 years, technically. But hat was becasue she was originally a rainbow coloured load of, well let's not go there. When I had here sort of 3/4 done, my mum dropped it, and then just dumped the parts in with some of my other Lego and told me I could just rebuild it. So I gave up for a month, then, then I got down to it. There were long delays waiting for parts to come form overseas, and I have a long list of Bricklink people I have to thank. But in the end, it turned out well. So, long story short, it probably took a couple of years. If I had to build her from scratch now, it's probably take one to two months, just because of the shear size and detail.

Time well spent my friend. I wouldn't settle for this as a final product if I was you, no insult intended, but there is further potential for this ship and from your other constructs you have the imagination to go there. You have given me some good ideas on my fig size dropship that I am working on (white in base colour too!!). Thanks for nagging me to look; 100% worth it. MOCon mate.
Thanks! No, I'm not settling for this as the final product. There will be improvements made. When and what they will be I cannot say, but they will happen.

Hey Reaper; I finally got a chance to have a look and glad I did. Great fig build. Love the shape, all the pod sections/cabin components. White is the new grey;). MOCon mate.

Quoting legendary green fya If George Lucas saw this he'd be shaking in his boots. Great job the time, effort, and bricks you put into it were well spent. :)
Wow, thanks. That's a big compliment considering I'm a huge Star Wars fan.

Quoting Garrett A. My first reaction. EEEEEP that's good! I had to do a double take on the buddy icon just to make sure it wasn't a ship made by Kelso or someone! After examining the detail, I think it's even better, especially the hangar. And dat hull.. (Takes a pause to hyperventilate into a bag) WOW it's cool! I'm making a few ships for some going-ons in my series, and I now know the challenge of a streamlined hull, so I know first hand how hard that is. Tis perfection, as far as I can see. If there is one thing to criticize, it's that it's not big enough to be a mobile home base. If it's a big fighter, then I can understand it. Also, whenever I post him, could you do a poster for Ciaros V2? I'll give you the details later.
1st: Thank you! Than you very much. 2nd: Yes, I wouldn't mind making her slightly larger, or shifting some stuff around to enable more crew space. Then she really could be a mobile base of operations. Yes, she is somewhat of a giant fighter, designed to hit hard, fast and up close, as opposed to the distance tactics favored by larger ships. 3rd: Of course I'll do a poster.

Quoting Senator Chinchilla . Very nicely details, and certainly quite thorough. Tons of neat bits around the interior, and a Snerp. Gotta love the Snerp.

Quoting Mastermind ¿? Wow, I'm amazed by the huge amount of detail you put into the interior! The outside looks real nice as well; I especially thought the rear of your ship was pretty neat. Great build!
Thank you! Many people seem very impressed with the interior. I tend to think it was underdone, but apparently not!

Quoting matt rowntree This is OUTSTANDING!!! Great, original design for the hull, but the detailing inside is the real winner (gotta have a deep-fryer!) Very well thought out and a stellar execution. Thank you for going with a NEW universe, I find it more entertaining to watch what develops anew rather than wading through preconceived notions. Hopefully this crew and their vessel grow into something greater than even you dreamed of. You have a wonderful start for some glorious stories. Thank you for sharing this vision and you should be proud Reaper.

Quoting LukeClarenceVan The Revanchist Whoa, awesome! The shape of the prow is what really stands out, but the overall shape is great as well. I especially like the trans-blue curved pieces you use for the bridge viewport, and all the opening features. The landing gear's also great, something I always forget about on the rare occasions that I build ships. How old are you now if you started this when you were seven? Always cool to see someone who cares about how long a stud is and how lengths relate to ship types, I've been scouring through all sorts of books trying to find a Star Wars ship that's small enough for me to build at mini-fig scale, though your solution of building a new universe looks fun. Excellent ship!
Thank you. In answer to your question, I'm 14 turning 15 this year. I can also tell you, the only thing small enough for minifig scale in the SW universe are fighters, freighters and shuttles. Thanks for leaving a detailed review of Thunder Child
