McDonnell Douglas MD-11 in AMTRANS livery
This is my attempt to make the real-life MD-11 in minifig scale, using my preferred building techniques. As these construction techniques required some compromises, some details on my MD-11 obviously differ from the real thing. That is why I also gave it an alternative name, 'P-5 Heron', sticking to my previous aircraft nomenclature and pretending that it is built in license(with some slight alterations). Key words: McDonnell Douglas MD-11 Lego LEGO DC-10 aircraft jet jetliner airliner cargo transport transportation airline airlines livery engine thrust reverse reverser airport airfield layout scene ground services landing gear retractable functional realistic realism playability container KAAI Kasteleiner belly container passenger passengers AMTRANS Amtrans American Transport Alliance

Underside

An underwing picture, showing the extended flaps & slats (Kruger flaps):

Some details of the model:

- Total length: 103 cm, wingspan: 96,5 cm, max. height: 32 cm
- Fuselage Diameter: 12 studs
- Seats / passenger capacity: 66
- Rear cargo deck: space for 3 containers (my standard size; like the ones used in the display of my DHL aircraft); HOWERVER NO FRONT CARGO DECK (due to stability purposes / wing-fuselage-integration)
- Estimated weight: 5-7 kg
- Hatch which can be opened from cabin to cargo compartment (photos yet to be taken)
- Duration of construction (while having a social life, of course hehe): 6-7 months
- Retractable landing gear
- working extendable flaps & slats (here: Kruger flaps)
- Two-person cockpit
- Thrust reversers (no pic taken yet...) on all three engines
- working control surfaces
- 3 doors on each side of the aircraft (front doors, overwing maintenance & emergency exit, rear doors)
- 6-wide engines

I have't gotten around yet to taking pictures of the interior, which is a bit of a shame because the seat arrangement and the interior in general look nice enough. There’s even a hatch to the cargo compartment that can be opened, which is wide enough for a minifig to pass through... Pictures of all that may be coming some time soon...

Engine detail from inside - compression units of the centerline engine (I integrated them into all of the engines; they would be visible through the lateral thrust reverser doors as well, though I didn´t take that kind of picture...):

Now I officially own a FLEET, hehe:

NAME: AMTRANS, short for “American Transport Alliance”
ICAO CALL SIGN: AMTRANS
LINES OF BUSINESS: passenger & cargo transportation
CURRENT AIRCRAFT IN USE: KAAI C-4 Titan (large cargo aircraft for oversized cargo)
McDonnell Douglas MD-11 / KAAI P-5 Heron (airliner)

Your aircrafts have qualities of a very high class. This MD11 and your C4 Titan are both stunningly designed, with beautiful color schemes. It puzzles me, though, that you, with your skills, not are building more models of real aircrafts.

Great fuselage building and color scheme. Great appreciation for recent comments on the Cathedral. Best of luck for 2014. Pierre

A solid build, as always from you. I would like to see you make other airport installations too. You could make a HUGE diorama... Like the two brothers of MiWuLa (and their many paid builders -not to forget!)

Awesome plane, I love it, your best yet. It looks amazing. I hope you don't mind me saying but on a few pictures, there is something of the A330-200 as well (http://www.mocpages.com/image_zoom.php?mocid=359663&id=/user_images/10576/13672258262), even if the third engine clearly makes it an MD11. The rear of the aircraft is also amazing, and you've managed to recreate the DC-10/MD 11 rear in the best possible way. The airline name on the underbelly also makes it very realistic. Anyway, to sum it up, great amazing job, congrats! :)

The, accuracy, and the size, is simply mind blowing! I have never seen an MD-11 at such a size. And the logo and livery, wow! If I could give more, I would, but I am relegated to a lowly 5/5.

Great plane! I'm not a plane expert but your creations look "just right" - but I know enough about LEGO to see that you are a very talented builder. I like how you created all the patterns and writings without stickers.

Many thanks, guys! I am glad you like it. I know I don't post often. I'm a rather slow builder... And my job and commuting to it and back keep me especially busy. If only one could have unlimited Lego time... Or stop the time for the whole world and only let it run for oneself, so one wouldn't miss out on any other nice things... :)

WOW! JUST AWESOME, nose looks a bit off though, you should build a L-1011, the curved rear exhaust will be intresting, (and yes i know it will take months to build an aircraft this size)
