A prototype of a Manhattan express station, includes a mezzanine, and 4 tracks accessable via 2 platforms. Also, a prototype of fare control turnstyles and a metrocard machine.

About this creation

In mid 2002 I built this prototype for fun, while working on my city. I'm not really a "train head" (I only own one train set) but I thought it would be neat to try to simulate the Manhattan subway system, since most stations have the same basic look. In retrospect, I should have added some rats. :)

Again, this is just a prototype. I'd like to build a real subway system under my city, but for now this is all I did.

Here you can see all three levels. The street is on the top. The mezzaine (middle) is where you swipe in, buy tokens, and transfer from line to line. The platform level (bottom) is where you board the trains. There is an uptown plaform and a downtown platform, each serving an express (inner) track and a local (outer) track.

Here you can see a close up of the plaform prototype.. The blue columns represent the I-beams that are used in most Manhattan subway stations. There's also a wooden bench on the platform.

This is a prototype of what would go in the mezzanine level. There are 3 turnstyles, adjacent to iron fencing for fare control. There's also a MetroCard machine up against the wall.

I have an idea Sean (since I know you read all your comments!). Let's build a city together! You build the subway, I'll build the city! You know, I'm getting close to posting my city is it's starting to come together and an entire section is almost done, but it looks very reminiscent of your Greenwich Village so I'm a little hesitant to post it. I mean it's not a poor piece of work, I just wouldn't want anyone tossing "copycat" around :P. Anyways I hope when I do decide to post the pictures of it, you'll take a look, maybe comment. Your stuff has been my biggest inspiration, so maybe it'd be cool for you to see someone build a city inspired by your own work. Anyways, love this idea!
