This Pickup Tow Truck model 9395 I really like. It is a model which has a lot of opportunities. I am eager to buy it but hey also the crisis hit my live, so decided to build it from the lego I have. I have enough from better times anyway.
What surprised me is that the Lego Designers decided to put the engine for the Tow in the cars 'butt'. I saw similar trials of persons trying to motorize this model with engines outside.
I couldn't believe that Lego would build such a dense design without any options to fit 3 engines inside the model for both Driving, Steering and functions. So first I build the model 9395 myself and studied it carefully. After a few hours I knew that is was possible. So I started in this feed with Phase 1 PF for the functions.
What I first did was fiting the battery box in the cabine, to avoid sacraficing the roll bar. I did this by increasing the height of the roll bar with just half a lift arm, see blue parts.
In order to replace the manual driving of cable and tow I chose the right side for the m-engine just behind the right door. The picture above provides the replacement of the manual gear and to reduce the speed of the engine.
In the above picture the position for his connection point. Just remove the paneling and lift arms from the side and fit the part in for the driving between the engine and the function switch.
This is mounting for the engine. I couldn't find a satisfying solution to get the engine in line with the speed reduction so I used 2 small gears to overcome the difference of height of 1 knob.
You See the engine fits below the seats neatly. You see the engine fits in the frame of the car.
Now fit in the small gear to connect the engine and the speed reduction. Try it frist before you rebuild the car again.
So if it works the side of the car can be rebuild. What I did is I replaced the axle from the picture with a axle length 7 so it rests finally again in the panel where the manual gear knob as well for more stability.
As you can see you can easily neatly fit an engine in this nice Lego Model. You can't see the engine from the outside and you don't have to change the looks of the car. Ok besides the little increase of height of the roll bar.
For those who have this model or like to try it as well. It is worth while the effort. Not only myself but the kids are playing with it now as well. Towing around all their broken cars in the living room.
