Stahl House
22nd in the post-war series of Case Study Houses, built overlooking Los Angeles in 1959.
About this creation

Buck Stahl knew what he wanted. After several architects had told him it was impossible he met Pierre Koenig, and together they created one of greats of post war Modernism.

Taking full advantage of it's position perched on a hill overlooking L.A. this is a fairly simple, inexpensive small family house built from standard components. Stahl's widow lives there still.

From the road, it does it's best to look like a cowshed...

Notice the lack of railings of any kind - this house is perched fairly high up. The Stahls brought up their children here and they survived the experience.

The pool will lift out to reveal the dark goings-on beneath the surface simplicity. All to attach those glazing bars, only one of which had to be simply wedged in place.

Interior in all it's interiorness...

An extremely sophisticated* tree...

*Not really...

The rocks beneath are exellent. They don't distract from the wonderful build in the slightest, yet they quietly earn their keep down there. Great work!

Quoting DeTomaso Pantera I love this Nick! It almost looks too modern for your style, the LEGO looks new too ;-) Full of fantastic details, I love the rock-work, did the Tower Bridge bite the dust? haha I'd love to live in a house like this!
Hi Tom :-) Yes, a Farnsworth house is in here and the Tower Bridge only has one tower...

Quoting Tom Simon Lovely job Nick. Regarding "The pool will lift out to reveal the dark goings-on beneath the surface simplicity.": do some of these LEGO projects give you an uncomfortable window on your subconscious mind? (I'm married to a psychiatrist. And I'm her pro bono case study.)
There's a thesis in there... I guess we're not constructed in layers. Thanks, Tom.

Now that's a real beauty! Great design MUST exist in the proper environment. This house does. I grew up in that area and the views, in spite of the smog and haze, are spectacular. A house like this is perfect for the area. Simple, beautiful, elegant, complete. Stunning on all levels. Great choice to create a Moc and perfectly executed.

Quite the odd home, but some cool looks and techniques nevertheless. Also, that tree was pretty intense. I'd even consider activating the filter, I seriously question if kids should view palm trees of that nature. I mean, it had leaves and everything.

Quoting David Roberts Just so typical of those houses that one sees in films and exactly the opposite of what you'd want where I live by the seaside in Wales. That flat roof, the outdoor pool... I love how the pool is a lift-out unit and has all of those tiled corners. I was disappointed that there wasn't a space rocket launch pad underneath though :P
Haha! It would look right at home on Tracy Island...

Phenomenal build, beautiful and elegant. I really like that tan rockwork you've done, and the house itself is superb. Great to see such a well-built interior, and the swimming pool's fantastic. One qualm though, my dad suggests that the pool needs sharks. ;)
