Combinators: Prototype expansion set LDD (20/05/2013)
Combinators: Prototype expansion set
About this creation

The new "Complete" Prototype is revealed!

Definition: Combinators - Series of interconnecting micro scale vehicles that form super robot modes. Originally referred to by the generic name "Space Ninja Fleet", rebranded to avoid copyright issues and to make it more appealing for Cuusoo.

Definition: Combinators: Prototype - retconned experimental super robot, intended as a simplified version of the concept to test new ideas and combining techniques.

Definition: Proto-Armour - Armoured Combinators Super and Ultra forms utilising units from the Prototype fleet and the Prototype expansion sets.

Definition: Super mode - any combined team featuring 5 core vehicles.

Definition: Ultra mode - any combined team featuring 10 or more vehicles.

Definition: Core - Main team for each sub-line, to date Constructors, Omega Fleet/Space Ninjas, Stealth Shadow and Prototype 0.5.

This is the expanded version of the Space Ninja / Combinators prototype team mecha. Now the full team includes:

Prototype 0.5
Red
Yellow
Pink
Blue
Green

Prototype Expansion 0.6
Black
Brown
Indigo
Violet
Grey

Prototype Complete
Gold

Note: The costume design for the Gold pilot has the colour pallet reversed from the other Combinators: Prototype pilots. This was to show his command status and to make a distinction between him and the other pilots as the Expansion team all feature gold over white colour schemes as well.

It is the largest single team to date. ALL the components are backwards compatible with all the Combinators branded designs. The team is currently enjoying some popularity on Cuusoo. A big thank you to everyone who has supported my designs, every vote is gratefully received.

Last week I was looking at the weapons for the Combinators: Prototype 0.6 set and thought, what if I could make something that allowed the main figure to hold both swords as one weapon.

A little fiddling later and viola the Gold Prototype Flier.

Turns the twin swords into a battle-axe styled weapon. Note the swords that came with the red prototype and similar core units can be combined with the axe to make it more like a sword, while the other hand is free to hold the second weapon. This can be seen in the images above of the Space Ninja Fleet/Space Fleet Omega ultra proto armour mode and the Stealth Shadow Ultra proto armour version.

Review:

The Gold flier is a very basic little space fighter/jet design, more in keeping with the aesthetic of the Steal Shadow team. I've carried over the accent colour over white motif of the rest of the team and I think it works pretty nicely.

By combining the swords that came with the Black Flier, it is now possible for him to hold ALL the weapons of the prototype team, and this makes him even more formidable looking.

The backwards compatibility has some slight issues though. The two Fliers (Brown and Violet) occasionally need to be attached under the toe rather than the arch of the robot foot, this has two effects on designs such as the Constructors team. 1. It means the Ultra form now has an ankle of sorts and can bend the foot from side to side, an unanticipated extra piece of articulation. 2. It places the ultra mode foot even further forward, making the design a little off balanced and might impede stability if realised in real bricks.

I'm about 95% happy with how the Prototypes have turned out, the more simplistic vehicle designs say "prototype" and avoid criticism of being overly styled. The combination system still works pretty well and is now even more varied than before, and the fact the Proto Armour can attach to ANY Combinator Super Robot means the play value of this set would be tremendous.

News: (20/05/2013)

As I mentioned on my homepage, I'm taking a break from MOCing at the moment. This set was just me killing time last week but I'm pretty much tapped out on new ideas. I've got a tonne of stuff I still need to tidy up to post on Cuusoo, and I'd like to add more detailed entries on the unofficial Cuusoo wikia for all my projects.

I've also been procrastinating on having a thorough tidy up and coordination of my folders, which have gotten way too big over the last 3 years. I think some things need to be moved to a "other" folder to keep the main folders easier to navigate.

I've also been neglecting my duties as admin in my groups and moderator on MOCPages Help, not to mention I was supposed to be getting back into fiction writing this year....

This isn't a good bye post, far from it, while ever there is a MOCpages there will be an Andros.Tempest / Pittstop, but I do need to start focusing on more pressing off line issues and less on virtual LEGO.

Quoting Chris Roach lookin good - agree with you on CUUSOO if any of us post an original idea likely not ever to be made because there are too many unoriginal people in the world to vote! LOL! I have refrained from putting on anything for that reason!
My stuff seems to do well while ever it is on the front page, ie NEW, but once another 8 or more projects are added interest immediately stops. I know part of it is because I don't advertise more, and have a very limited internet presence. For example I don't have a Blog, I avoid using Facebook and I don't have a Twitter account. I've also noticed A LOT of the designs on there could not be (legally) realised as an official set. Even the ones that don't use questionable construction techniques, seem to completely forget, complex designs are VERY expensive, LEGO would guarantee cutting some corners, their design wouldn't get made, just the idea. But then again, I'm about 25 years older than the average user on Cuusoo. Realising these things often takes being old enough to vote. Regardless of what the rules are regarding membership. I'd say 95% of the members there aren't more than 14. Which is reflected strongly in their voting preferences. You put a Clone Wars or Ironman project on there and they vote lemming fashion, but put something truly different, whether good or bad, they ignore it completely - because they have never heard of it. Sheesh, of course you haven't heard of it, it's NEW! Grrrr.

Quoting David Roberts I still think these are a great idea and nearer to an actual product line than most stuff on Cuusoo. I know what you mean about LDD. It is so easy to start it up and spend a couple of hours exploring that inifinity of bricks.
I have to admit to some frustration with regards to Cuusoo. Dozens of projects on there are clearly LICENSED characters which LEGO will struggle to get rights to. Very little is truly original, and the ideas that are are ignored (unless some spamming blogger likes it in which case it mysteriously hits 1,000 likes in a weekend).
