It's the eyes. They seem distant and sad, clownish. Clowns were always creepy to me because the levels of circumspection they pose. Peering into our own lives from an oblique viewpoint and showing a level of pain and recognition and, of course, mocking reflection. David, these are great and perfect for your style. Oddly deep yet aproachable. Insane, yet sensible. Clownish.

Obliquely via something I'm working on for a course on Beckett - hence the clowns.

How about Monsieur Lacoue and Monsieur Labarthe, they are certainly French.
