This is a 62000-brick LEGO model of the Academic Quadrangle area of the Simon Fraser University in Canada.
About this creation
This is a 62000-brick LEGO model of the Academic Quadrangle area of the Simon Fraser University campus in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. An update to my earlier version, the model includes the Academic Quadrangle, the Bennett Library, and the Convocation Mall.

The campus, built in 1964, is infamous for its contemporary brutalist architecture reminiscent of the 1950s-1970s concrete shopping centres with their myriad of elevated sections and underground corridors and passageways, much of which also gives it a futuristic look and feel which has led to it being used as a filming location for many TV shows (Stargate SG-1, the remake of Battlestar Galactica, Andromeda, The X-Files) and movies (The Groundstar Conspiracy, The Sixth Day, Anti-Trust, The Day the Earth Stood Still), to name but a few. The brutal squareness of all that concrete actually makes it an ideal model to build with LEGO.

Built and rendered with the free LDraw tools MLCad, LDView and POV-Ray.

Check out those three-thousand-four-hundred-and-fifty-two windows :)

YouTube Video
This 3-minute YouTube HD video includes most of the images from above and 2 animation sequences, all rendered from POV-Ray. The animations include a pan around the AQ gardens and a fly-thru from one end of the model to the other.

More Info
The upper AQ4, AQ5 and AQ6 levels of the model Academic Quadrangle feature 52 classrooms, 32 offices, 336 lockers, 8 entrances with stairwells and roof-top fire exits, 8 utility/storage rooms, and a campus directory on the east side. The AQ5/AQ6 levels are completely elevated on pillars. The large centralised AQ4 garden area includes a pool with "floating" walkway, lots of bushes, flowers, and trees (including two large custom trees), park benches, log benches, a statue, and lots of sloping grass! The lower AQ3 and AQ2 levels are built with only a west facade so that images can be rendered looking east from the Convocation Mall area.

The model Bennett Library has 7 floors with the public entrance on level 3 from the Convocation Mall. It presently consists of outer walls only, plus the various structures on the roof, and dummy floors for render purposes.

The model Convocation Mall runs from the Academic Quadrangle, past the Bennett Library, just up to the start of the steps that would lead down under the Rotunda or Transportation Centre. It contains twin elevated walkways from the AQ, various plants, seating, flags, a fountain, the entrance to the library, a campus directory, and a very elaborate roof structure with supporting columns that together use around 15000 parts.

Quoting Achintya Prasad Massive! You must have a very powerful computer to support that.....
Actually nothing could be further from the truth. 10-year old 1.5GHz single-core with 768MB RAM and 32-bit Windows XP. If you read the technical description on my personal website (linked from my homepage here) for this model you'll see a good explanation of the technical effort that was needed to optimise the model so that it could be rendered on this old relic of a PC :) If I actually had a top of the range PC I would have been able to render slightly better quality images.

Stunning work. Done right, brutalism can be surprisingly beautiful, as it is here. Bravo, sir!
