Nova Wing 2
"If the Nova 2 is nothing more than a 'flying wrecking ball', why hasn't anyone been able to knock it out of the sky?"
About this creation

Built - February 2013

I guess I still have more to say regarding the use of the LEGO wings pieces. The cheapest way to buy them (I think), is in bulk via Bricklink. The cost of shipping one wing is practically the same as shipping five wings. So, when I started shopping for the wings to use with The Dosha Osprey and the Cloud Cutter, I ended up buying 12 total wings. Spoiler alert, I have a few more builds on the way that use the wings.

I present to you The Nova Wing 2. This is the weirdest/hardest build Iíve tried to figure out how to make work. Connecting the two wings at this angle and in a sturdy fashion took several full design attempts. And the MOC still protests when I move it around the house.

The solution I finally committed to came from an unexpected inspiration.

I teach part-time as a LEGO MindStorms NXT instructor for after school programs hosted by SMaRT Education. And during a free build session in one of my classes, I started designing a Technic robot chassis from my instruction kit. Initially I was trying to solve some missions in The Green City Challenge, an official LEGO instruction module we use in our class. However, I realized the wheel base I was developing could work to help secure the wings at the angle I was hoping to use for The Nova Wing.

As soon as I got home, I was quick to tinker with the design. A month later, the MOC was finished. All it needed was some pilot minifigs.

Enter Captain Vai Scryp and Mal-Strom. Iíve had these guys sitting on my desk for a while. Once The Nova Wing was completed, they seemed a natural fit to own the starfighter/gunship.

Every now and again I catch myself daydreaming about Bounty Hunter adventures these two would likely go on. When Calista and I put the heavy repairs on our MOCpages page last month, she noticed the rather prolific number of minifig comics other members were posting. Team Nova Wing may end up in their own minifig comic strip this summer.

Quoting Ape Fight Not normally my bag but this is a great piece of design. The shots with the explosion / cityscape are awesome too. 5 stars. FYI: Found it blogged on The Lego Car Blog

Quoting LukeClarenceVan The Revanchist This is... stunning. The ship is an example of sheer perfection, sleek contours paired with superb colour blocking. To top it off, your photo editing is second to none, I look forward to see your edits almost as much as your MOCs. Great use of those wing pieces as well, and I eagerly await a comic with Team Nova Wing, especially if the strips have photography like this.
Uh oh, the pressure is on now! It will be a while before the comic strip gets posted. I want to make sure I have a good story to tell.

Quoting matt rowntree Absolutely one of my favorite ships! Love those beefy engines. And really what more can be said about those wings. I just built a flying wing myself using that piece and started looking at it from different angles wondering if I could make something "outside of the box". Then I saw this beauty. Question answered. Stunningly and cleverly answered!
Aren't the wing pieces crazy fun to use(?). I'm sure there are many other custom ways to work them into a build. I'm about half way through another MOC that uses four of them right now. BTW, I love how you used white and orange in your flying wing.

The cockpit canopy comes from LEGO Bionicle set 8971, Toa Terrain Crawler. I noticed the piece while collecting Bionicle minifigs. At first I thought it was kind of goofy looking. When I checked the PDF build instructions I found out how it attached to the "Windscreen 12 x 6 x 6 Curved" piece (the one used for SW: Slave 1), and quickly changed my mind. It became the first design element for the Nova Wing MOC. The wings were added much later. Thanks again for all the great comments!

stunning... that's for a while one of the best designs i've seen here ! the shape and coulurblocking is beautiful. and the details like (whats that?) in the middle of the wings are awesome! But one question: Whats that canopy piece ? Is it Lego ?

This is a truly exceptional build. The use of the big wings is extremely effective, and the colourscheme perfectly judged too. I don't recognise the cockpit piece - which żs also fabulous - where does it come from?

Quoting Archon Caledonia You are back...and with a vengeance seeking bounty and bad guys...SWEET Georgia Brown but that is a lovely craft!
Thanks! Calista and I are excited to be back on MOCpages. We still have a few more LEGO creations to add to our page to make up for the two years our page was down. But now that I'm committed to producing some decent edited photo scenes for our creations, future posts will take a little longer to post.

I'm excited all of you like this MOC. I'm not sure what lead me to use the two wings in this fashion, but once the idea got stuck in my head, I couldn't let it go. I'm relieved that I was able to figure out a way to make it all work. At one point, I even threatened to just glue the darn wings into place. Then came the break through with the Technic NXT Kit chassis. Thank you all so much for your comments.

Quoting Mister Lego ~ Fantastic ship, and great photo editing too! You should definitely do a comic :)
Thank you. The photo editing is one of my favorite parts in the whole process. I'm drafting out some story arcs for the two characters. I'm leaning toward all LEGO based scene designs, but part of me wants to make it as epic as possible by any means...
