Custom Painted Kanohi Masks
Some Kanohi masks I painted myself.
About this creation
Hello again, Crazy Awesome here.

A little MOCing block here and a little Bricklink shopping there, and I've deviated from the main track (i.e. building my Toa of Plasma) and took the time to paint some of the masks I have. They're not Modalt quality, not even close, but I think they're kinda cool.

The paint I used was probably the big setback of this project, since it never painted evenly and was too glossy...in other words, it almost looks like Sharpie (and I admit using some Sharpie too...). Most of the paints were metallic. Some of the masks, like the green Rahkshi head for example, needed to be painted with a silver undercoat before applying the finish.

And no, these are NOT for sale. I don't have nearly enough masks or the time to be painting all day, so I'm not going to run this like Modalt does (plus, his stuff is of better quality anyways!). If you want to make these yourself, just make sure you've got a little bit of paint, a steady hand, and a nail filer to clean up mistakes... :D

Toa Bovema be like "dat mask doe!"

Two Rahkshi heads, one green (more towards the color of Rahaga Iruini) and one gold (weather control).

Side view. As you can see, the green Rahkshi head looks very messy because the green didn't fully cover the silver undercoat.

Anglular view.

Your run-of-the-mill Turahk with a custom painted head.

A bit scratched. But still boss.

A Nokama Hordika head, painted silver and highlighted with black-green. This would fit well with a Toa of Magnetism.

A metru red Great Komau, which also had a silver undercoat and highlighted with yellow Sharpie. Definitely Toa of Fire.

A Whenua Hordika head, painted metallic light blue and highlighted with blue. Toa of Water, or maybe even Electricity.

This one came out really well!

Copper-highlighted Huna, I guess for celebratory purposes or something...

The "mouthpiece" is detailed with black Sharpie.

This was the first mask I painted, a Black-silver Mahiki intended for a Toa of Earth or Iron. As you can see, I did a very sloppy job on the silver portions, but the black came out excellent.

Another Mahiki, this time stylized to resemble Matau from the Legends of Metru Nui movie.

Love how the yellow turned out.

Mmmmmmm...lookin' good!

And finally, a black Rau mask, intended for a Toa of Earth or...even better..a Toa of Shadow! :D

I think leaving the eyes uncolored makes for a really neat effect. This one's my favorite.

Hopefully I'll have that Toa of Plasma up soon, but thanks for checking this out in the meantime. Please rate and comment, and if any of you are familiar with mask customization, I'd like to hear some tips! I might be making a mask-exclusive Bricklink order very soon... :D

The Rau is, of course, the absolute highlight, but the LoMN-Mahiki is cool as well!

Yeah I know what you mean! It'll be my Sophomore year but I've taken my artwork far more seriously and I've been putting ninety percent of my effort into it but I want to try and do some Stopmotions and stuff when the new lego Star-Wars sets come out. Anyway all the time I've known you here I've been a big fan of your works and that dates all the way back to when Reach was brand new and LDD was what all the kids were using. So if you get the chance email me Pineapplesamuraistudios@gmail.com I might want your Sci-Fi incite so don't take too long to reply!

Quoting Pineapple Samurai Studios Long time no see! I love these masks! Maybe a silver blue and black would be cool! By the way are you going to keep steady on the mocs?
Thanks, glad you like them! I'm going to try my best to keep steady, but come September I will probably return back to my hibernation state and resume required school things (applying for colleges, senior year curriculum, cross country etc...)

While I'm not in support of modifying parts from how LEGO pieces come, I do think that the detail put into some of these is great, and I really do think you did a great job with the designs on some of them.

Quoting Steve The Squid Heyo, Modalt guy here ;D These are some of the best non-commercial custom painted masks I've seen in a while :D I like the Movie-edition Mahiki and the Huna. The only problem is the streaking, but you say it's the paint you use. We use Citadel paints if you're interested :) But good job on these!
Ah, the legendary Modalt guy! :D Thanks for the comment, it means a lot coming from the true pro. I'll try to find myself some better paints if I decide to paint more, because the streaking is definitely a glaring flaw in nearly every mask i painted.
