Sukhoi Su-227 "Ofnir"
Guardian of the Eurusian airspace.
About this creation
Sukhoi Su-227 "Ofnir"
After the DRR joined the Sitirian Coalition, they gained access to some of the most advanced fighter jets in the World, which again became a serious threat to the Eurusian airspace. While the most experienced Eurusian pilots could take on the Sitirian fighters, the average pilots would most likely be blown out of the sky flying their aging jets. Not able to protect the Eurusian airspace effectively, the Strategic Air Command requested a new state of the art fighter that could engage and defeat any existing fighter in air combat. The answer was the Sukhoi Su-227.

Called “Ofnir”, a name for dragons in Norse mythology, the Su-227’s design is based on further development of the Su-27 “Flanker”. The most noticeable visual changes include angled tail fins, a new wing design as well as modified air intakes and engine compartments. This was necessary to allow the new powerful Saturn/Lyulka AL-36C engines to fit in the aircraft. With cutting-edge avionics and the new Tikomirov R2-01A Pulse-Doppler radar with multi-target engagement capability at a range of 200 km, the Su-227 is a formidable adversary to any modern fighter jet. While being able to engage and eliminate targets beyond visual range, the Su-227 also have outstanding dogfighting abilities. The new engines give the Ofnir lots of thrust, while the newly developed wing design and a lift generating fuselage allow unmatched turning ability and great manoeuvrability at all speeds. When being unable to eliminate a target with missiles, the Su-227 sports a powerful 30mm cannon internally which will tear any enemy plane caught at its six' to shreds.

While primarily designed as an air superiority fighter, the Su-227s design, avionics and powerful radar system also adds ground attack capabilities to the aircraft.

The Su-227, while based on a non-stealth design, it’s covered with radar absorbing material which decreases its radar-signature considerably. The ECM-dome between the engines also adds to the aircraft’s defence, jamming incoming enemy Air-to-Air missiles and SAMs. Because of the dark colour of the radar absorbing material and its phantom-like radar signature, the Su-227 is called “Shadow Flanker” by the UCF/DC and the GU.

The first Su-227s was delivered to the elite squadrons of the Strategic National Air Guard (SNAG), such as the Capital District Air Guard “Iron Eagles” and the 1492 TFW 103 Air Unit “Fighting Redwolfs”.

  • A parked Su-227 from the Redwolf squadron.

The pilot checks the aircraft before taking off.

The Su-227 gets fuelled up and loaded with missiles.

Packin' heat. The pilot helps the ground crew load R-83 "Archer II" heat seeking missiles on the wing pylons.

    Enter the dragon...

The flight mechanic gives the main computer a pre-flight check.

The cockpit canopy opened a bit more than usual to get a look at the interior, and the powerful Tikomirov R2-01A Pulse-Doppler radar in the nose. Further back you can also see the fighter's main computer.

The flight mechanic gives the pilot the all-clear signal.

The Su-227 is pulled out of the parking area by one of those ever present airport utility vehicles.

The Su-227 seen taxiing to the runway.

    "Redwolf 1, standing by"

Not a bad looking rear end...

Revin' up your engine, listen to her howlin' roar...

    "Redwolf 1, launch!"

Climbing to higher altitude. The landing gear is retracted (removed).

    Chasing the angels...

A side shot of the Su-227 in flight.

Cumin' atcha live! I like this shot.

Usually the dragon's belly is its only weak spot, but the Ofnir's belly is lethal. Showed here are the standard armament of two Vympel R-47 “Arrow II” long range and Vympel R-83 “Archer II” short range Air-to-Air missiles, plus an external fuel tank.

Here's the Su-227 together with the Redwolfs' squadron insignia.

one of the best airplanes I've seen on moc pages. Nice use of many colors in a single plane too. I see too many mono-chromatic designs out there, but the color variation in this is lifelike

Hi again Aleks. IF you don't know, Raplh Savelsberg recently returned to MOCpages. I would really like for you to do the same. I've looked at your newer creations on Flickr and I think they would be extremely popular on this site. Please consider returning to MOCpages, and if you don't, I'd understand. Bye - Jeffery Smith

Great design! I'd like to see this tear an F-22 to shreds though! The missles look a little too small as well.

I used to make jet fighters all the time, and this is better than anything I ever came up with. With the angled tail fins and the thrust-vectoring panels at the back, it looks very much like my idea of a near-future, Russian jet. My only advice would be to change the wings by making them wider front to back. Other than that, you did

HELL YES, IT IS GODLIKE!!! It's design seems to reflect the F22 Raptor and the original Flanker. 1,000,000 out of 10.
