Operation: Steam Knights (OSK130810) August Challenge 2013 - Emperor Rex in Changeling Armour
August Challenge 2013!
About this creation

My August Challenge - has ended!!.

28/07/2013 - I've set myself a challenge. Starting 28/7/2013, ending 10/08/2013, I need to create (or rather recreate) a design based on the following concept:

What if "the king" also had a Steam Knight armour?

Guidelines:

- The armour must look like it is intended for royalty, (in other words it needs to look better designed, made from stronger materials, and possibly better decorated than the other armours. Possibly more ceremonial looking than functional).

- The armour MUST include at least one feature no previous Steam Knight has.

- The armour should include a weapon "fit for a king". (In other words, don't rip off an existing design).

- The final design should be ready to upload to Cuusoo no later than 11/08/2013.

Edit(05/08/2013): (work in progress) I'm going to be posting images of each version as I complete them, here are links to the current crop 1 3 4

As I explained in the notes for "3" I scrapped the changes for "2" before I took any images so they are not included.

In a realm of magic the wise men and elves have invented steam technology, these walking suits of armour have been dubbed "Steam Knights".

Name: Emperor Rex
Species: Human
Known History: Rex is the ruler of the human occupied lands of the medieval Universe of the Steam Knights. For most of his life he has ruled from his lion sculpted golden throne with honour and wisdom, but the rising threat of the Wyvern sect of humans has caused him to become more directly involved in the wars fought to protect his lands.

Seeking the aid of the Wiseman of the Woods, Rex was given a silver talisman with strange characters inscribed on it in a language Rex recognised from the ship wrecks washed ashore following his war with the invaders from the East.

Returning, troubled by this revelation, he sat in his throne pondering the implications, when the castle was attacked. The combination of Rex's need to act and the Eastern magics of the Changelings transformed the throne into a Steam Knight armour.

After engaging Lord Bryson in battle the armour converted into its secondary form to battle Bryson's Cockatrice, that of a huge golden lion.

Creator Commentary (part 1):

This has been a labour of love for the past two weeks. The basic idea has been stuck in my head since the very beginning of the Medieval Universe theme, the idea of a lion themed armour that could actually become a lion.

Since, in heraldic tradition, the lion is most closely associated with kings it seemed the logical choice for Emperor Rex's armour. Plus the development of the "Changeling" sub-theme, opened up new fictional possibilities I hadn't previously considered.

Colours: I wanted this to be gold and royal looking. For me three colours say royal, Blue, Red and Purple. I've tried altering the colour scheme to blue and gold but somehow the red just works better with this design. Purple and gold didn't look right at all.

Weapons: Sharp eyes will note that in addition to the lion's tail forming a sword, the lion's chest detaches to form a small shield like weapon. I had originally planned for the shield to be much larger (so I could decorate it in some fashion) but in the end this just fit the design better.

Design "issues": Getting it to look mechanical was a pain. All my early designs look too organic to me. Too much lion armour and not enough steam lion armour. I'm hoping the piston styled limbs give that impression. The feet on the knight form were a nightmare. I finally compromised with the heel spurs (which might not actually be long enough). The individually hinged toes would enable an actual brick version to stabilise fairly well, but balanced poses (particularly extreme ninja like poses) might be beyond those t-joints.

Design "triumphs": The ball joint waist was a really surprise. I'm definitely a convert. The lion's head hatch was better than I hoped. I've been brainstorming ways of making it LOOK like a lion for days, and yet my first build was my favourite. The sword is definitely much better than I'd hoped. But the VERY pale silver is a little too white in some images to stand out against a pale background. I may use the classic uploader to show it off better against the black background.

Next(?): Well I promised on Cuusoo back in July that I was going to create another mythical creature for the "next" changeling. Probably a phoenix or a griffin. There are aspects of this design I could adapt to the later and the existing Cockatrice design could easily be adapted to make a phoenix, however I am planning another new frame as well.

Quoting David Roberts The gold and red looks very stylish and regal. I like the way that it transforms from humanoid to animal too. The variety of views that you've uploaded are virtuoso LDD work to bend and pose all of those joints.
I debated making the colour scheme purple, blue or red, I even considered green at one point, but in the end Red suited the character best. Besides it gives it an Iron-man vibe.

Quoting Oblivion Doomknight Awesome! Reminds me somewhat of Leobreaker from Transformers Cybertron. ^_^
My original plan was to take Leo Convoy as inspiration for the design, but the engineering was difficult to pull off. Since I'd set the deadline already to upload the final design today, I didn't have time to R&D alternate transformation techniques.
