METAMORPHO the Element Man
METAMORPHO first appeared in an old DC Title: THE BRAVE & the BOLD in 1965. He was created by Bob haney who had great success with both THE DOOM PATROL and The METAL MEN. He was Rex Mason an adventurer who worked for a maniacal SIMON STAGG whose money paralleled BRUCE WAYNE and OLIVE QUEENS. Simon's daughter SAPHIRE loved Rex, this didn't please Simon, he set Rex up for a fall. He had him go in a treasure hunt for the 'OR of RA' which changed him into the elemental man that became known as METAMORPHO. Like the FANTASTIC FOUR's THING, Rex could not change back - yet SAPHIRE still loved him and they married and had a son who possessed his father's power! He often appeared with BATMAN, and helped BATMAN co-found the OUTSIDERS and at first turned down the JLA for membership only to accept their offer later on! There was even an ELEMENTAL WOMAN! It appears he was based on another attempt at creating a different type of hero - from MYSTERY IN SPACE - ULTRA the Alien! I loved his artist - one of the few women in the business - Ramona Fradon, later on I had the honor of seeing her draw many of the characters I created for SUPERFRIENDS!
