Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog a gripping and bricking musical comedy of triumph and tragedy. If you haven’t seen this awesome 42 minute production by Joss Whedon starring: Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, and Felicia Day, you need too! It is available on BlueRay, Netflix, or elsewhere online- kids always consult with your parent(s) before viewing online material (yes I am a parent, can ya tell?).
About this creation
My entry for Round 2 of the MOC Olympics.
My mysterious and extremely talented opponentEric Rathke.
Our Category: Story Time: Build a series of events from a book or film in the form of a story tower - a 16x16 vignette or smaller with multiple levels, and a different scene from the story on each level. It's been a while since we've seen story towers, and those things can be very cool if done right.

WARNING: Spoiler Alert! If you haven’t seen the webisodes this will surely ruin some of the surprise for you, though not the sheer awesomeness that is Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.

"Ah hahahaha. Ah ha haaaa. A haaaa.

So that’s you know… coming along. I’m working with a vocal coach. Strengthening the “ahhaa”. A lot of guys ignore the laugh and that’s about standards. I mean, if you’re going to get into the Evil League of Evil you HAVE to have a memorable laugh. I mean do you think Bad Horse didn’t work on his whinny? His terrible… Death… whinny."

Here we are introduced to the good questionably evil Dr. Horrible, he does have a "PhD in Horribleness". He is recording his webcast in which he answers fanmail, rants a bit, and in general shares with viewers a glimpse into the life of a villain.

Moist, a member of the Henchmen’s Union, pays the good evil Dr. a visit and brings him a handful of soggy mail…Mostly bills no doubt but wait, what’s that…

"Is that from the league? It’s from HIM! That’s his seal isn’t it?!? The leader? The… Oh my god! I got a letter from Bad Horse. That’s so hardcore. Bad Horse is legend. He rules the league with iron hoof. Are you sure you wanna…?"

Bad Horse Chorus:

"Bad Horse
He rides across the nation
The thoroughbred of sin
He got the application that you just sent in
It needs evaluation, so let the games begin
A heinous crime, a show of force,
(A murder would be nice of course)

Bad Horse
He’s bad
The Evil League of Evil
Is watching so beware
The grade that you receive will be your last
We swear
So make the Bad Horse gleeful
Or he’ll make you his mare
You’re saddled up
There’s no recourse
It’s ‘High-ho silver’
Signed: Bad Horse"

Laundry Day, even super-villains have to do chores. Here we are introduced to Dr. Horrible’s secret crush Penny. Of course Dr. Horrible can’t go parading about as himself so to Penny he is just Billy “Fellow Laundry Person”.

That is of course once they form a “real, audible connection” (Dr. Horrible has been pining from afar for quite some time).

Dr. Horrible is set to pull off his Wonderflonium heist, but runs into penny shortly before he can activate his van remote. “Why did she have to talk to me now?”

Well, a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do, so Dr. takes control of the van when suddenly Captain Hammer appears on top of the van and breaks the remote control device causing it to swerve towards an unsuspecting Penny! Captain Hammer jumps down and throws Penny out of the way into a trash heap just as Dr. Horrible manages to stop the van.

Dr. Horrible is able to get away with the Wonderflonium but the damage is done and Captain Hammer gets the real prize, Penny.

After the Dr. uses the Wonderflonium to complete his Freeze-ray, his next heist is foiled by Captain Hammer and the LAPD, both of whom apparently watch his blog. Bad Horse is unimpressed and dictates that the only way Dr. Horrible can gain access to the ELE (Evil League of Evil) is to commit murder.

Dr. Horrible is conflicted but the situation with Hammer and Penny makes up his mind for him- Captain Hammer must die, Dr. Horrible gets to work on a Death-ray!

Meanwhile, Captain Hammer has convinced the mayor to help Penny with her Caring Hands homeless shelter idea and give her an old building to use.

Dr. Horrible decides to strike at the speech to honor Captain Hammer and mark the grand opening of the shelter. Incapacitating Captain Hammer with his Freeze-ray, Dr. Horrible moves in to finish him off, I hope Penny doesn’t see.

Sadly the Freeze-ray chooses this inopportune time to fail and a reanimated Captain Hammer levels Dr. Horrible and damages the Death-ray.

The Death-ray explodes sending Captain Hammer fleeing in pain (apparently the first time he has felt such) and impaling Penny.

Penny’s death and Captain Hammers absence now assures Dr. Horrible admittance to the ELE as Bad Horse’s criteria has been met. (Dr. Horrible changes from a white lab coat and gloves to a red lab coat and black gloves)

THE END...of the story, but not the show :)

The Tower:

CAST and Crew

Front Row: Bad Horse Chorus, Back Row: Captain Hammer/ Dr. Horrible Groupies

From left to right: Captain Hammer, Dr. Horrible, Penny

Front Row: Homeless Dudes (that may or may not smell like Poo), Back Row: Homeless woman, Moist, The Mayor

The Evil League of Evil From left to right: Diamond Eye (artistic license- not in show), Bad Horse "The Thoroughbred of Sin", Fake Thomas Jefferson (actual ELE member), Dr. Horrible

The Micros

Sets:
The limited number of filming locations for the original webisodes made Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog the perfect candidate for a story tower (though I did choose to interpret the scenes slightly based on my limited LEGO collection).

Dr. Horrible’s Laboratory / Living Room

The Laundromat

The Street

The Meeting Hall

The Evil League of Evil Board Room

The Hand

"The world is a mess and I just need to rule it!"

Directors Cut:
This topic was extremely challenging for me to build, way outside what I normally build. My original plan was to make the tower a more complete structure rather than the seemingly haphazard stack of vignettes it turned into. Ultimately, time and building technique choices conspired against me, though I am satisfied with how it turned out. Despite its apparent “rickiteyness” the tower can actually withstand some handling. The globe on the top was part afterthought and part engineering necessity as it served the double function of ornamental topper and delicate counterweight (it freely shifts on the hand’s palm when the tower sways and thus keep the top floors balanced and from crashing off their spindly supports). The highlight for me though was having an excuse to watch Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog about 20 times over the last week :) Thanks to all the organizers, judges, and contestants that make the MO possible!

Excellent job and tough luck on not advancing as this is great. I am impressed by how much both you and your opponent packed into tiny bases for each layer of the tower!

Thanks, glad you liked it! There's nothing too sinister about the blog, I just like to know what my kids do on the internet...they are much younger than you though.

This was an incredibly hard match up for me to judge. I love Doctor Horrible and your tower is great, but I think your opponents build was a bit more complex and that won my vote. You did an awesome job and best of luck in the future!

Well, this was one of the hardest matches to judge so far! In the end it was really a 51/49 split and my vote went with you! This could really go either way so good luck! ~ Chris.

I love your use of the capes as the pendant/curtain overhangs over the hall! I recently saw someone else use them in an even different way on a figure. I'm guessing towers are indeed tricky, but looks like you got a helping hand! I will say my life could have still been complete without the knowledge of the Doctor... hee, hee! Good Luck! :)

From your build, the blog must be EXTREMELY odd, but a very good execution nonetheless!
