M.O. Round 3: matt rowntRee vs. Legopard - Chase at Lou's Cafe
Back to the Futuron!: Even if you weren't around during the 80's, everyone has heard of the time traveling adventures of Marty McFly! Build a "SET" from Back to the Future that you think should be released. (Futuron style not required, it was a play on words.)
About this creation
Here’s a link to my formidable opponent Legopard’s entry.
Here’s a link to the MocOlympics.
AND, here’s a link to the primary reference picture.

Way back in 1985, there sprang a film that would forever be etched into the minds of movie fans forever. “Back to the Future” hit theaters worldwide with a vengeance spurred on by one of the most robust budgets and promotional work ever seen. Yes, Mr. Spielberg was on a tear pushing Robert Zemeckis’ new sci-fi comedy and rightly so. It was a fresh idea about time travel with a beautifully idealized nostalgic look back at the 50s, when Ike was president and Ronald Reagan was an actor (debatable), poodle skirts and saddle shoes were the fashion, and “Forbidden Planet” loomed around the corner (shameless plug.)

That being said, let’s all cram ourselves into the iconic time-travelling DeLorean and go back to 1955. There we’ll see the true charm of the movie. The best part of sci-fi is the ability to transport oneself to another place and time. “Star Wars” catapulted us a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. With this movie we’ll go back a little over sixty years ago to the same spot.

So, kick the tires and light the fires, make sure your gull-wing door is properly fastened, and double check that the flux capacitor is… Fluxing. Enjoy.

Oooh, nice '46 Ford there Biff.

"I'm gonna ram him!"

The old "bail off the board, under the car, bound through the seats, back on the board" trick. Nothin' but net.

EXPLETIVE!!!

Eeeeewww. A whole lot of expletive. Note the Dodge truck with real poop action. Classy!

Goldy is NOT cleaning up this mess.

Now folks, let's go inside and sit a spell.

The Formica counter tops. Now with 50s pastel. Space age!

"Daveyyy, Davey Crockett. King of the wild frontier!"

The 96 ouncer! Eat it all, and it's free.

Yeah, Lou runs a clean ship here folks.

Phone and speaker. Details, details, details.

Awww. Sharing a milkshake. How sweet.

Mmmmm, donuts.

Who you get with the "SET". Left to right: Future mayor Goldy Wilson, Marty McFly (Calvin Klein), Biff Tannen, and the irrepressible Ric... Errr, I mean, LOU! (Yeah, I just referenced Ozzie and Harriet. Look it up kids. =])

'46 Ford Super De-Luxe convertible. Niiiice lines.

Nice nose as well. Beauty shot there ripe for the brochures. See the U.S.A. in your Chevro... whoops, I meant Ford.

"I like big boats and I cannot lie..." sorry.

Dodge deully.

Yup, still a Dodge.

Not so nice butt.

This one however actually works. Be sure to ask your sales representative for details on the real poop action ONLY available from Dodge. Oh, low blow. ;)

Shameless plug from the last round. So what! The movie never showed the roof, so I took a few liberties to add a little interest.

Oooooh, accessories. And, a separator.

Da Wurlitzer!

Modulary!

Modulary next to a pet store. Café next to a pet store. Now that's wrong on several levels. I guess we found out about the 96 ouncer. XP

What the... CHEWYYYYYY!!!

4th wall: I have to be honest here and tell you that I was not at all inspired by this challenge. At first, mind you, because it is excruciatingly difficult to avoid the iconographic images of the Delorean, the clock tower, the DeLorean, the “time” train, the DeLorean AND the clock tower, THE DELOREAN, and did I mention the DeLorean? Yes, I set out specifically in this round to NOT do a DeLorean for one good reason: Lego already made a spectacular version (honestly, it is really good, even though they misprinted the time of 1955 to 1958. Oooops.) No matter, I did not do a DeLorean, instead I did another wonderful car from the movie: Biff’s 46 Ford Super De-Luxe convertible. As a gearhead myself, I can gaze at the beauty of this gorgeous vehicle and cringe a little more when I see a ton of manure dropped into it. But, for the scene, it couldn’t be more fitting. Who didn’t see themselves as Marty making the most spectacularly elegant escape in movie chase history?

This brings me to the “SET”. I find that I prefer the modular cityscape Lego has been producing for some time now. Personally, I look at other new sets and all I see are useful and useless parts. With the buildings, I see detail and architecture that is in itself a beautiful, decorative thing. Playability is always fun, which is why I included the manure hauling Dodge dumping its load. The details in Lou’s Café make it enjoyable as well. I wanted it to look just like the retrospective, yearning glance that the movie portrayed vividly and brilliantly. So, what “SET” from BTTF do I want Lego to produce next? I want the works! Give me everything and a side of humor. BIG! DETAILS! FUN! PLAYABILITY! And CARS THAT ARE NOT A DELOREAN!!!

I want to give credit to Zach “gothambygaslight” L. for his clever coffee pot design. Thank you, Zach. I'd like to apologize for my sticker work, apparently "clear" means opaque according to the decal manufacturer. I want to let you know too that I just picked up a new camera and am getting used to it; so, sorry that some of the shots seem a bit amateurish. And I would like to thank the judges for creating an eventually inspiring category, being heavily influenced by 80's sci-fi myself, this trilogy holds a special place in my heart. I honestly attempted to do it justice, no matter what the results. I mostly want to wish the best of luck to Legopard in this round; I sorta threw everything at this one. Good luck to all.

Quoting Delatron 3000 Well mate, that is a winner. The cars are masterful and I think would have happily formed the basis of a $30 set on their own, but the decision to go with a modular just pushes the level of the whole thing up a big notch. Rammed full of details (love the Wurlitzer) and neat construction, it's excellent. Well worthy of the win, congrats on advancing.
Thank you Delatron. I felt the caliber of competition was considerable this round with Legopard, I knew I would have to step it up and go the extra yard. Also, in the process of nailing down what I was going to build, I kept returning to the question, "What set would I want?" That ended up being the impetus for going modular and committing to it fully. Congrats on your own advancement as well in spite of the silly drama involved. ;)

Quoting Hans Dendauw NPD Great choice of scene and masterfully realized! The cars are the bees knees and the soda shop is spot on, especially the interior. Congrats on the blog and trip to the next round; good luck!~H
Thank you Hans. The bees knees = classic! It was my initial choice, but then I got weighted down with the obligatory ones that I eventually had to shove aside. Once that happened, I could throw everything at this. The blog is just too cool but it's more important to me that everyone enjoys this as much as I enjoyed building it.

Quoting Tom Remy Excellent choice for a set! This is really beautiful and true to the movie! The car is wonderful. Oh, and for your information, Lego deliberately changed the time to 1958, it's the date of the first Lego brick patent. Now the challenge is : will you be able to put an easter egg on each of your previous entries in the next rounds? :) Good luck!
Ha! I had no idea why they changed the date. Makes sense now. Thank you Tom. I tried to stay as true to the movie as much as possible. The billboard on top was my own addition, but they never showed the top of the building so I took a few liberties. As far as Chewy in the previous entries, no. Future ones, yes. It's just too fun. Thanks again Tom.

Thank you Senator. Your own eye for cars is something I am inspired by and look up to. I really understand the joys of building Lego cars. The Ford was tricky, and frustrating, and difficult, and an absolute joy to refine. I am DEFINITELY planning on others, mainly classics. No DeLoreans. ;)

Quoting Leda Kat =^..^= This is mint. It makes me want to pull a sicky from work and go home watch the trilogy. The colours and shapes on the outside and all the little details inside just scream 50s diner to the max. The addition of the car and manure truck just really tip the whole moc (set) over the edge. It would be a NZ$299 set here and I'd gladly pay it. Put it on Cuusoo!
Thank you Leda. I see no problem calling in for the trilogy. -cough,sniff- I stayed up late watching all three on the first night to try and get the right inspiration for this. Still pretty fun movies. I had to curb my appetite for detail and stop adding at a certain point. Once I got going, it started to scream for more detail. I was wondering about the price for something like this set and was thinking about the same. I am hoping that the judges weren't specifically calling for an affordable basic set. We'll see. I know that I would want this at least for my modular cityscape, I was hoping others would too.

Thank you David. I DO love the DeLorean, it's just so unbelievably expected and almost impossible to avoid. It took me 2 days to mentally break away from it and focus on the "SET" that I would want. And it would seem that the juke box is my "Robbie" for this round. ;)

Thank you very much Dave. I can't express how much I appreciate your input and encouragement. This contest is pushing me WAY beyond my own expectations. I find that creating what I want is something that has always been a part of my psyche, seeing that I can apply it elsewhere is borderline unreal. Always appreciate a Star Wars quote! To be honest, I have always worked slowly and precisely. These competitions have blown my mind as far as what MY abilities are. You should give it a go, they're very gratifying. I have studied Art my whole life and have never felt more secure and comfortable with any media as much as Lego. Quoting Nick Barrett Where to begin... that '46 Ford is a real delight and, best of all, NOT A DELOREAN :-) . This would make a brilliant set, your '50s architecture hits the spot, inside and out. Also, it's nice to see there's still a place in the modern modular landscape for red classic windows. Best of luck to you!
Thank you Nick. You nailed the issue I had with this category: Where to begin AND not be a DeLorean. It actually took 2 full days to settle on something and veer away from the obvious while still making it a desirable set. I really understand the joy of building cars after the Ford. Getting all the curves just right and the presence perfect is highly satisfying. I'm so glad you caught the windows, I could have used the newer clear ones, but I felt these were better suited for the architectural detail (just wish they were dark green. Oh well.)

Thank you my friend. Devil's in the details. The cars were tricky but fun. The juke box only shows up for a brief second in the movie, but it's vital IMO. That is actually the third version I made and I was surprised at how authentic it turned out myself.

That is truly a wonderful complement Topsy, thank you very much! It's actually my evil twin Zartan doing all the building, I just take the credit. ;) And we'll see if I go farther, I NEVER discount anyone. Honestly didn't think I had it in me. My wifey keeps cracking the whip and I HAVE to go build. work, work, work. ;)

Quoting clayton Marchetti I was just getting ready to turn off the iPad and go to bed when I saw a red dot and saw it was you ! I've been waiting for your next entry and you did not disappoint! I love the cafe in the style of Lego's city buildings . The inside is so 50s I love the jut box and the coat rack and that lovely cheese buger eeemm cheese burger. The car is extraordinary! I want one. Love the bumper . The manure truck looks great too. I love the movie sign for forbidden planet awesome touch! And also Chewie! Brother I think you out did yourself on this one . Now I would really like to see you build a delorean I'll bet it would be epic . Well good luck I'm going to bed now .
Thank you Brother. I found that the modular city sets are the ones I don't disassemble (Star Wars UCSs as well.) They are the sets I want now rather than the smaller pocket change ones to add to the collective. I love detail more than playability so I went in that direction. Cars are playable by default. ;) Sorry I didn't reply last night, went to bed myself. Just threw 3 solid days of building at this. And, NO! I refuse to build a DeLorean! =] Unless I can put Chewy in it. Hmmm.

This is great, that scene from the movie just replayed through my head. Great build!

Beautiful vehicles, fantastic detailing on the building - curved countertop, tiled floor, etc. etc. Despite your being 'uninspired' you've given this a lot of love. Great stuff with a high win potential!

Where to begin... that '46 Ford is a real delight and, best of all, NOT A DELOREAN :-) . This would make a brilliant set, your '50s architecture hits the spot, inside and out. Also, it's nice to see there's still a place in the modern modular landscape for red classic windows. Best of luck to you!

Love the style here....the vehicles are great, excellent scene to portray, and fully of humor. But it's the juke box which is the icing on the cake. It's full of win! Great job my friend! NEXT ROUND!
