US Coast Guard MH-65C Dolphin Helicopter
A 1:65 scale model of a US Coast Guard MH-65C rescue helicopter.
About this creation
This MOC is a 1:65 scale MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter, done in the color scheme of the US Coast Guard (the primary operator of this aircraft). It was originally built as part of my Reliance class US Coast Guard cutter MOC.

The tail section of this helicopter was a bit of a challenge at this scale. It is built upside down (and at a scale slightly larger than it should be) so that the curve below the fenetron could be represented reasonably well. Also, I had to settle on a solution that models the fenestron well only on the left side.

The main picture and the following one show two views of the MH-65C Dolphin from the left. This is the side from which the fenestron looks good.

The following picture is the Dolphin from the right side. If you look closely, you'll see the rescue winch above the door.

Finally, we have a picture of the air crew of three standing in front of the helicopter.

Quoting sam the first the use of wheel-cap is genius!! well done!
Thanks. Unfortunately, it only looks good from the port side -- there isn't room to put one on the starboard side.

Quoting Luke V This is very accurate for the size! Great job! Could you make a post on the orange life raft and the white life raft? I would like to know more about how you made those...
Thanks. I'm in the middle of a big project right now, but when I'm done I'll see if I can get some close-ups of the RHIB (the orange boat) and the motor surfboat (the white one) posted.

Quoting Aaden Hughes Excellent work! You've used some nice parts usage throughout!
Quoting Alex Rode I absolutely love your style of building. It's so clean and professional; and not like everyone else's. Well done again on this build!
Thanks, guys. Regarding the NPU -- I didn't really try to set out and do that, but after trying many different options for some parts of the build, that's just where I ended up.

Quoting Alex B Lovely work. I particularly like the tail. If you think if you built it in real bricks the tail wold be so heavy that it would make it tip? The tail looks like it has allot of parts!
Thanks. The tail section is connected to the boom via a hinge, but that entire hinged section is braced against other parts in the boom, so it can't move downward any more than what you see in the pictures. It could be bent upward, but I wasn't worried about that happening.

Quoting Henrik Jensen Excellent Helicopter! Great mix of technic and normal parts in the tailboom. And the SNOT-sides looks really great.
Quoting Locutus 666 Excellent! I like it! The parts usage here is awesome. The shape is perfect. The tail seems a bit to big to me but in total still awesome.
Quoting Nick Barrett Superb model, it takes a while to realize how small it is.
Quoting adam thelegofan rutland the eurocopter dolphin is one of my fave's! good job!:D
Thanks, everyone! As I noted in the description, the tail is indeed a little too big, but I had to compromise on that to make use of the bow and spoked wheel parts that represent the fenestron and its housing. It took me countless iterations to get a satisfactory tail boom. The final result, with the Technic cams, has a cross section that is approximately correct, allows for the Coast Guard stripe to be represented (although not at an angle, as it should be), and makes the boom fairly strong, since there are a pair of axles running through it.

Quoting clayton Marchetti You know Matt when I saw this helicopter on the coastguard cutter I thought. The helicopter could be in a post all it's own. And here it is . The Dolphin is fantastic . I like how you used the cams for the tail section . I like the tail as well . Awesome!
Thanks, Clayton. I think I mentioned earlier that the Dolphin was actually the first thing I built, since I wasn't sure whether I would be able to do it at the 1:65 scale and I thought it would really be essential to the MOC. I can't tell you how many options I tried for the tail and tail boom before settling on what you see, which includes the cams in the boom.
