Steam Novel Chapter 08: Mecha On The Roof
Another chapter, another story. All I have to say is this; Longfellow and his sauce is still a better love story than twilight. Nuff said. :)
About this creation
Longfellow was running like mad, easily avoiding the several obstacles (such as cake trays, people and pets) that stood before him. His pursuers were not so lucky. They were barely keeping up with him. Their chase was leading them back through the carriages, and through a lot of rather surprised passengers. They had travelled all the way to the economy before things changed. Moda had reached the front of the line and opened the door between the cars. He realised that in front of him was a locked door that led to the cargo bay, and he couldn’t figure out where Longfellow had run off to. He then found sudden realisation, and it made him shiver.
“Crap! He’s on the roof!”
Moda scaled the ladder leading to the top in a matter of seconds, and soon he was running after Longfellow, who had switched directions to run for the engine car. Onncod began climbing up as well, but he then noticed Ervan come out with an odd looking device that looked a lot like a flamethrower. He turned to him.
“What are you waiting for? Go! Longfellow is getting away!”
“What are you doing with that?”
“I need to get to the cargo bay. Inside should be something that I can use.”
“But that’s stealing!”
“Three things; one, it’s something of MINE that I’m getting. Two, even if I was stealing I would be fine with it due to my position on the police force and the situation we are in. And three, YOU SHOULD GET GOING!”
Michael quickly complied and made his way up to the roof. Sam, still rather confused, climbed up as well. When he was gone, Sylph turned back to the door and activated the blowtorch-looking device. It wasn’t actually a blowtorch at all, though; it was a powerful laser-cutter that ran on super dense Rotonium. It only took him about twenty seconds to fully cut through the door, as he was simply slicing off the lock and the latches. Since the train was no longer in the tunnel and actually on a bridge over a lake, he pushed the door aside. It fell off and went flying into the water below. He could have probably heard the large ‘SPASH’ if he tried, but due to his task at hand he didn’t. His mind was focused on one thing and one thing only – getting what he needed. Ervan walked over to the back of the room, finding the strange item covered by the tarp. He said nothing, and simply pulled it off to reveal the metal magnificence underneath…

It was only when he had reached the roof that Michael could take in the surroundings of the train. They were on top of a long, single-directional railway that was placed on a large bridge, supported by huge brick columns. Above him, he saw the large twirling rope of smoke, seeming to be exhaled from the lungs of the train. Below him, he could see nothing but water along the horizons, and that very water glistened like jewels. He was almost fully distracted, but he quickly snapped out of it and went running off after the notorious Longfellow Jones. Moda was well ahead of him, but he was still nowhere near the criminal. To the others, it seemed as if every step Longfellow took was a giant leap. It wasn’t long before Moda stopped to catch his breath. Longfellow, as if he had ESP, slowed down and turned around to look at him. These actions seemed to taunt Moda, but he kept his cool and finally brought out his weapons. His silver pistols reflected the sunlight, and even when it glared in Longfellow’s eyes, he didn’t blink once.
“Nice guns, Moda. Too bad you’ll never hit me with them.”
“I knew you were strong and fast, but those steps. How did you manage that?”
“Keep guessing. I’m sure you’ll never figure it out.”
“Spring loaded boots?”
“Much more complex.”
“Then I’m stumped.”
“Yes, much like a tree. And you know what you do with trees?”
Moda was silent. His pistols were still fixed on Longfellow’s head, however they both knew it was mere etiquette. Even if he did shoot, Longfellow would duck out of the way and fire one of his knives at him. When Longfellow got no answers, he raised his arm, ready to fire yet another knife at him. His voice no longer had the amusement it had earlier when he spoke again.
“Trees need to be cut down for progress to ensue, and when I’m done with this world there will be-“
He was cut short when the sound of gunfire came from behind him. Michael was holding his double-barrelled sniper rifle at him, his eyes not moving even when he felt the recoil. Longfellow looked down at his side, and began to feel it. When he was finished, he looked back up again. His hands weren’t even covered in blood, and his gaze seemed to have the look of amusement once again.
“You hit me. You actually hit me! That is a very good feat for a beginner like yourself. You’d have made a fantastic soldier for my army.”
He raised his arm once more.
“Too bad you have to die now. I almost feel like it was a waste.”

Longfellow’s arm was raised for a few seconds, but then he placed it down again. He took a few steps backwards, as if he’d seen something rather menacing behind him. Moda and Onncod turned around simultaneously to see what had made him waver. Standing there was a huge Mecha in the exact same colour scheme as Ervan’s clothes. On its back was a huge triangular-shaped backpack, which had caused it to look like a pyramid when under the tarp. It had two completely different arms. The right was thin and bony, with only two fingers on it. The left was a massive cannon, glowing green. The Mecha began to step forward with legs that slightly overlapped each other. It’s crimson eyes glowed with fury, and it began to quicken its pace. It went into a power walk; to a jog; to a full sprint. Soon it was jumping over the cars with great precision as its voice, which sounded very much like Ervan Sylph, boomed around the others.
“LONGFELLOW!”
Longfellow uttered a swearword that referred to human waste under his breath and started running in the opposite direction. The mecha continued to run, but it stopped as soon as it reached Moda, Michael and Fireblade. It knelt down and aimed the huge cannon at the now frantic masked man. The glowing on its arm became more intense, and a typical buildup sound filled the air. For a few seconds, there was nothing. Then, the fire came. The world around Michael was tinted in a harsh white, and he saw a huge mass of energy being fired from the cannon. The sound that came from that energy was as if someone had sped up the rain tenfold. Then, it stopped. Longfellow was gone, and Moda stood up and started shouting at the metal giant.
“Sylph? Is that you?!”
“Yes, it is. I took this with me when we boarded the train.”
“WITH A CANNON LIKE THAT?! YOU COULD HAVE BLOWN UP THE TRAIN!”
“No, that would have been impossible. This cannon is merely an EMP. It may have electrocuted him, but it would not have damaged anything else.”
“And what would you have done if the train malfunctioned, HUH?!”
“We have more important matters to take care of. Longfellow isn’t dead. He should be lying there, stunned, but I can’t see him.”
Ervan was correct. Longfellow had disappeared. There was no sign of him lying there at all. Suddenly, Sam Fireblade noticed something that made them all panic.
“Is it just me, or are we slowing down?”
They all realised where Longfellow had gone and what he had done. There was no need for any extra explanations, they all knew what had transpired. In the midst of confusion, Longfellow had made his way to the engine car and had obviously disconnected it. There was no time for extra thought, and Moda quickly made a dash for the engine car. But he was then picked up by the Mecha’s twin-fingered hand and placed on its back.
“Hold on, it may get a bit hectic mid-flight”.

The mecha, with the other three people safely perched on its back, suddenly went flying upwards. It had been equipped with a GAP (Gravity Alteration Pack) plugged in safely behind him, and at that moment it had surged to life. The mecha flew into the air, narrowly avoiding the stream of smoke still coming from the engine. It then made an arc to change its direction, and gained speed rapidly. While Moda had his eyes fixed on the target, Michael was struggling to keep his eyes open and Sam was making the most ridiculous face; one that was similar to that made when one puts a hairdryer up to one’s mouth. The engine was getting closer, and a thought just occurred to the crazy-faced Sam.
“Um, are we going to crash?”
As if showing off or meaning to scare him more, Ervan sped up the Mecha even more. It got closer; closer; closer. Suddenly, it overtook the Jokidoryoku and aligned itself with it in front. They were now travelling at the same speed, and Ervan shouted out a warning.
“Prepare to stop!”
A few seconds later, the entire mecha halted. The train went slamming into them, and those riding on the mecha were sent flying onto the roof of the train; scrambling to hold onto something. Sam and Michael managed to grab the bars that lined the sides, but Moda was sent flying off the edge and onto the track. For a second or two, he lay there groaning in pain. He then got up and looked at the train, getting smaller and smaller until it disappeared on the horizon. He sighed, and started running like crazy in the direction. He knew it was futile, but there wasn’t much he could do.
