Chris' pretty sweet entry!

"Movie Scene Round"

Choices: Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow,
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

I don't really care for Harry Potter, and I had never seen Sky Captain, so I was pretty set on doing something from Star Wars. But I had a little bit of curiosity about Sky Captain. You see, Sky Captain was one of those movies that I'd only heard about in out-of-context remarks from friends, and looking at the DVD cover. This sort of thing happened to me before when I was six or so; all my buddies were talking about this new video game called Halo. They told me about this awesome guy called Master Chief, who wore a paintball helmet, got run over by Warthogs, and fought the Flood while searching for the Ark. From that information, I concluded that Halo must be a "Bible Paintball Safari" game.

Yeah.

But then I actually played Halo like ten years later (I know, right?) and realized how stupid I was. With that in mind, I decided to give Sky Captain a chance, and it didn't disappoint. It wasn't the best movie with the best story, but it was better than I thought it would be. It was pretty fun, too.

And then my Mom wanted to see it, and she liked it so much that she watched it again. Then my sister wanted to watch it...

I initially started work on the Flying Legion airbase attack sequence, but this last Friday (two days ago), I still wasn't liking it, so I scrapped it and started in this. Boy, am I glad I did!

This scene is where Joe, Polly, Dex, and three scientists try to find Totenkopf, kill him, and deactivate his doomsday device. They find his office, but it's guarded by two robots. Joe defeats the robots. One of the scientists is stupid and runs across metal planks in between two giant Tesla-type coils. *ZAP!!* He dies. Then the Tesla coils project some kind of electric hologram of Totenkopf's face. Totenkopf reveals why he's trying to kill everyone. Dex breaks the Tesla Coils, and the group enter Totenkopf's office...

I couldn't find a video of the scene, but here are some reference pictures:

Dex: He knows what he's doing... ...I think.

*pew pew*

*skip zapping sequence*

Polly: Totenkopf

Totenkopf: Who dares come before me? Who dares enter this place? What has begun... cannot be stopped...

*snap*

Characters (from left to right): Dr. Vargas, Polly Perkins, Joe(Sky Captain), Dex, and Dr. Who? (seriously, I have no idea who he is.)

Best of luck to you, Chris! Lens cap.

Well, Elliott. I saw this when you posted it and unscrupulously failed to leave a comment. I have consistently regarded you as a talented builder and when I saw this, I was blown away. The arch is very impressive as well as the surrounding embellishments. But that face. Wow. I haven't tried this technique before, but I would think that placing darker colored bricks in the right spots to achieve the lines that would form a face wouldn't be too tough. But to use the different grades throughout to form a face with the illusion of three dimensions has my jaw slack. The eyes especially have me muttering nonsense;) Simply outstanding, Elliott.

Superb work on that face and the backdrop acts as a great frame for it. Shoving aside what is a scene or not ;) I also think the design of the robots is excellent for the look of the film and the whole retro/ dieselpunk look. Well done on advancing in a tough matchup.

Looks like Yoda, but still a fantastic build. You have my vote, even ignoring those robot dudes.

Rock star! Whatta great build! I didn't care much for the movie- it had some eye candy, but overall was pretty crappy IMO. Your MOC definitely redeems it though.

I love this movie!!!!! Great job on the retro robots, and the recreation of the scene (I recognized it before I clicked on the icon).

I'm taking Xeno's lead here and also focusing only on your main shot. The building innovation to capture a tricky visual effect gets you my vote. Very clever and stunning to look at.

I agree that this is a very good movie with lots of brilliant designs. You, Simon, managed to capture one of those designs perfectly and showed that mosaics doesn't have to be boring (just my oppinion) when they are used in a clever way or in combination. I'd have liked to see more angles of the first shot, since you were not allowed to build a scene, but only a still from the movie. Thus I concentrated only on your main pic, but it was still enough to give you my vote.

That face is worth the price of admission! Fantastic skills there. I wouldn't have known where to begin with something like this build. I am completely impressed. Excellent job and good luck! You and Chris are going to be a tough call.

Great work on this, crafty technique! I figure the main pic is your "still shot" from the movie. Everything else is just cool to see, and creates some context for those unfamiliar with the film. Good luck!

I think you have me beat on the build but not on interpretation. IMO this is a sequence not a scene. You are extremely talented but, I would say you did not follow the answer Phipson gave you in the questions thread as to liking the build to pressing the pause button. It's still multiple frames or scenes or pauses methinks! :P But it is masterfully done!

Quoting Chris Roach Great build! I am a stinker for rules and interpretation and I will say based on Mr. Phipson's answer to your own question you hit the pause button more than once I think. In the judges hands now. Good luck!
Yeah, I thought about that, but look at it this way: There is nothing in any of the other pictures that isn't in the main photo, all the way down to the "wire" that Dex cuts, so what's wrong with taking more than one photo of the build? The items in the extra photos are just arranged as they are in the movie. Again, good luck! :)

Your skills are mind blowing. With your talent level and age you should accept nothing less then being involved with lego professionally. I have a plastics engineering degree from The Pennsylvania State University and the company I work for sells lego 6 million pounds of plastic a year. Your involvement with design could go as far as you want to take it. You could also go a completely artistic route too with your skill level. The sky is the limit. Keep up the great work.

Thank goodness you remembered to take the lens cap off to get the photos of that super trans-brick built face. A skillfull build, especially to get it to hang in the air too.
