MocOlympics Round 4: Delatron 3000 vs Stormbringer
Total Recall. “Two weeks”
About this creation
Category: Movie scene round.

Our choices were Bladerunner, The Matrix: Reloaded and Total Recall (The clarification that it should be the 1990 version and not the recent do-over involving Colin Farrell was unnecessary, because that one was OK but not a patch on the original)

My esteemed competition’s excellent entry Stormbringer

Group link Here

Video link Here To see the original scene the MOC is based on. Hopefully - if not I snapped a couple of shots of my telly in a really scientific manner which are at the end for reference.

I was pleased to have the choices we did, I had some solid sci-fi to choose from with great visuals. And the Matrix: Reloaded ;) Bladerunner has been popular MOC-fodder for a while so I had to go with a teenage fave that is one of Arnie’s best and part of a trio of great sci-fi from Paul Verhoeven (With Robocop & Starship Troopers) based on the short story ‘We can remember if for you wholesale” by Philip K Dick. Plus, it has Michael Ironside in it, which is scientifically proven to make it 14x better than the average film.

The scene I chose was our mind-wiped hero Doug Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) arriving at Mars immigration control, disguised as a woman. While being questioned by the officer stamping his passport, his mask malfunctions forcing him to remove it in front of the other arrivals and the troops holding him at gunpoint. Fortunately the mask has a further function which works fine…….

I tried to capture the moment where the mask is halfway off. It’s ended up being about ½ to ¾ actual scale.

The effect with the mask is the work of effects designer Rob Bottin and others and the film won an Acadamy Award for visual effects. Bottin’s work is fixed in my mind for The Thing and Robocop and here. This was one of the last great stop-motion/ minature effects movies. Only a year later James Cameron would change how the majority of effects-driven movies would be produced when he utilised CGI throughout Terminator 2 (He did it again with Avatar some years later. Go ask Matt Rowntree about it, he LOVES that movie ;) )

I burned the candle at both ends this round. Real life comes first and taking nights off with rarely-seen friends was brilliant but not helpful for building. Neither was the hangover ;) I wanted to watch the film again and did not have a copy so I started later than I would have liked. For all that I’m very pleased, but the hands are unfinished and the rest of the backdrop would have been nice.

Still, Round 4 and I’ve not used a minifig yet. What is up with me?

I hope to see you in R5.

Yours,

The Delatron

"Get ready for a surprise!" I don't know what could have ever possessed you to attempt such an ambitious subject on a deadline, but I'm glad you did. This is very well represented. I love all the round pieces on the bottom. The fact that you put as much thought in it as it would take to include that boggles the mind. Well done, and good luck in the M.O.

Quoting matt rowntRee Utterly brilliant! The scene itself is truly masterful and you've captured the essence perfectly. The masks "crazy bug-eyes" are stupendous, and it actually looks like Arnie. How you managed to do that inside another head is astonishing. It makes me want to watch it again. The hands may seem a bit unfinished, but the studded texture seems right. Great job Stu! And I have no idea what you're talking about in regards to Avatar. But I know that you won't find unobtainium on Mars. ;)
There is a Uranus joke here somewhere..... Thanks for the kind words mate!

To all, thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement, it really does mean a lot and spurs me on to keep building and, hopefully, winning! Thanks to my judges for your votes and for your time and efforts once again.

Quoting Stuart Lucas Well done on the win, Stu! looks like a re-match of our R5 3 years ago. Who'd have guessed?
And you Stu! Best of British, eh? With Nick Barrett still in and building like a mad genius too, GB has a really good showing again. Once again a Brit named Stu will be in a Semi-final, let's see which!

Quoting Stormbringer . This is phenomenal! I half expected to see a Blade Runner Moc, but your head bust of Quaid is spot on brilliant. Hilarious scene, though. Arnold has that look as if he's "not amused".
Thank you man, it has been a pleasure to compete against such a talented builder.

Never stop doing this stuff man. Everything in this is perfect, but if I had to choose a favourite bit, it is her teeth.

Quoting Andy L Fantastic work. Very tricky looking build and looks awesome. Must have been tempting to build the lady with 3 knockers!
Too many curves ;) But honestly, when I sat down to watch the film, I listed 22 possible scenes and that WAS amongst them. I narrowed the field to remove the awesome space landscapes on Mars (not nearly enough red) then looked at each for how buildable they were and a memorable or iconic image to capture. This was always a favourite. Thanks for the kind words.

Wow... how close was this. What this boiled down to for me was originality and technique and on that, you got my vote. Man that was a close matchup! What I wouldn't give to see you guys go head to head in a final round with all the chips on the line! Welcome to round 5! ~ Chris.

This was a very close match up. Your build is absolutely amazing, but in the end my vote went to Stormbringer. But this could easily go either way. Best of luck with your final judge!
