M.O. Round 5: matt rowntRee vs. Eric Rathke - The Muppets Take The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
Waldorf - I can't see this being any good. Statler - Bad and ugly though. Bwahaha! Uplifting Reboot: The opposite of the gritty reboot. Take an already gritty movie, and remake a scene as if it's a children's film. Imagine Sin City meets My Little Pony... (yeah, let your mind wrap around that one for a while).

And for your dining pleasure, enjoy THIS . One of the best and most recognizable themes ever.

What defines “gritty” movie? It could be a number of variables from an unhappy ending to an ultra-violent trip into madness. And, of course, all things in between. But it is the word “gritty” that sticks in my mind like a splinter. I thought of hundreds of possibilities to pull from, and believe me when I say that they were “out there”, but there exists only one movie to ever make me want to shower after watching it. That movie was “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”.

Undoubtedly, it is the definition of “gritty”. It’s brutal, violent, honest, twisted, dark, and, oddly enough, fun. It is a rare occurrence in movies to not have a good guy, especially in a Western. Sergio Leone threw out the textbook and created a situation instead that questions our own morals and ethics. Even though Clint Eastwood’s character is the “Good”, he really isn’t. He’s just less bad than Lee Van Cleef and prettier than Eli Wallach. Seems simple enough, they’re thieves searching for hidden loot and would just assume put a bullet in each other’s back rather than share it.

Now, how do we take that situation and make it happy like a children’s story? MUPPETIZE it! Is there no happier children’s movie more fun than “The Muppet Movie”? But simply changing out the iconic characters for colorful fuzzies isn’t enough. The story had to be altered to accommodate the children’s story aspect. So, on that note, let’s head on over to the cemetery, exchange a few characters with some cute and fuzzy-er ones, crank up the Ennio Maricone soundtrack EVERYONE knows, and turn the final shootout into something purely silly.

Enjoy.

Gonzo – Say Kermit, how did you know where the treasure was buried?

Kermit – That’s what the Swedish Chef told me.

Kermit – He said, “Shmendit fjorndy hurnda tusker doo.” Which as you know translates to, “It’s buried in the unmarked grave next to Matt’s best friend ever!”
Gonzo – Oh, of course. I knew that. Who’s Matt?
Kermit – He’s the guy taking the pictures.
Gonzo - So, is he "the ugly"?
Matt - Hey!

Chicken – Bok.

Fozzy – Next question is, “Who gets to open it?”

Kermit – Hi ho Fozzy. Gonna have to earn it.

Gonzo – Oh, the tension.

Fozzy – ow.
Kermit – You okay there Fozzy?
Fozzy – Yeah, the guy with the camera knocked me over.
Matt – Sorry, my bad. Went for an extreme close-up. Won’t happen again.
Fozzy – Jeeeesh.

Chicken – Bok.

Kermit – Uh, Fozzy? Is that rock or paper?
Fozzy – What do ya mean? What do you think it is? I think yours is scissors, but I can’t tell.
Gonzo – I thought we were playing rock, paper, chicken.
Kermit – Gonzo, what does chicken have to do with Rochambeau?
Gonzo – It’s always been rock, paper, chicken. Right?
Kermit and Fozzy – NO!
Gonzo – Oh. Guess I’ll have to return that 8-track to my cousin.
Fozzy – Say Kermit, yours kinda looks like a chicken.
Kermit – There’s no chicken in Rochambeau! Hmmmm!

After four and a half hours of arguing whether chicken is a valid substitute for scissors, Gonzo’s fine feathered friend took it upon himself to open up the treasure chest in spite of the outcome.

Kermit – Huh. Check it out guys. It’s the other end of the rainbow connection.
Gonzo – That’s great Kermit!
Fozzy – Yeah, kinda pretty too. I like purple. Makes me want to sing.

All (including Matt) – “…And someday you’ll find it, the rainbow connection. The lovers, the dreamers, and me! La da da dee dee dee da.”

Statler – That was brilliant!
Waldorf – Outstanding!
Statler – Fantastic!
Waldorf – You know, I think that was the best movie ending ever.
Statler – I’d have to agree. It was genius!
Waldorf – Matt’s best moc ever!
Statler – Well, it was good but I wouldn’t say it was his best.
Waldorf – You’re right. Not as good as the last one.
Statler – That one was way better. This one wasn’t really good at all.
Waldorf – It was terrible!
Statler – Horrible!
Waldorf – Worst thing I’ve seen in ages!
Statler – It’s an abomination!
Waldorf – Boooooo!
Statler – Boooooo!

Kermit - Hey, cmon guys. That's not very nice.
Gonzo - Yeah.
Fozzy - Here, wait a second. I know what'll cheer things up for you guys.

Kermit – Hey, where you going Fozzy.
Fozzy – Can’t resist Kermie. Yucca, yucca, yucca. Ya "dig" it?
Kermit - I don't think that helped. Hmmmmm.

Fourth wall: First off, let me thank the judges on what will hopefully be an ongoing theme in my future. Taking gritty movies and twisting them into something “G” rated was utterly challenging and hilariously fun. Some of the ideas that sprang from my imagination were truly wonderful and I intend to share them with y’all.

Secondly, I understood the importance of the category as being the metamorphosis into a children’s story. To me that meant silly humor, obvious sight gags, and adorable characters. I followed the action and premise of the original movie and rewrote the script to accommodate this platform in the style of The Muppet Show. I loved the idea of the Muppets in a cemetery where the end result is a happy song and dance of the dead, more of a celebration rather than a mournful experience. As it should be!

Thirdly, I wish Eric and the other competitors the best of luck. Extremely impressive showings to date.

Additionally, this turned out to be subtly cathartic. Zoe has been my best friend and the most fantastic dog for the past ten and a half years. I am definitely going to miss that 96 pound Akita/Shepherd mutt. The choices I made in deciding the scene were subconscious and proved mentally draining. Adding her tombstone to the storyline was a wonderful release. I have no intention of ending this on a somber note, so I simply ask that you enjoy it as a celebration of friendship and loyalty. And a whole lotta shedding. Of fur, that is, not tears. ;)

‘night Zoe.

Quoting Matt Bace I just saw that Eli Wallach passed away yesterday, at 98, which is too bad. The one consolation is that the news made me think of this MOC once again.
RIP Eli. I hadn't heard but still a shame nonetheless. 98 is really quite impressive, good for him. Zoe should be keeping him company, give him a big disgusting sloppy kiss. ;) Thank you Matt.

Quoting Tim C Not sure how I missed this. Not sure what to do with it now that I've found it. BWAH-HAHAHA! This is excellent, Matt. This was hands down my favorite show as a kid, and love it even now. The representation of the characters is pretty spot on. You also threw in a healthy dose of your sense of humor, which I always find enjoyable. Seeing that dark story put to the muppets was very creative and entertaining. On a more serious note, I'm sorry for the loss of your dog. I'm a dog lover myself and know that losing one stings pretty bad. Your experience actually speaks very clearly to me as I had to have a little black terror, (no I don't mean terrier, but she was my buddy, nonetheless), put down a couple years back, and I have a 17-year old Shepherd/Lab mix, (complete sweetheart, that one), laying here next to me even as I type this, and I see a hard time on the horizon with her. But to end on a high note, this is a great, well-thought-out build, Matt.
Thank you so much Tim! Easily my favorite show as well. It is a testament to the genius of Jim Henson that they are still funny and the humor isn't insulting, well except for Statler and Waldorf, but that's by design. ;) As far as my Zoe, I'd like to say it gets easier, but it really doesn't, just less frequent. I still hear her nails on the floor and the soft jingle of her name tag. The funny thing is how I have taken to aping her little "harrumph" when she'd plop down. It's amazing how the tiniest of details about their lives make such a lasting impact on our own. Except for the shedding. That was borderline brutal. I'll be picking out Zoe hair for decades to come. Oh well. :) Thanks again Tim!

Thank you Max! I hoped to do the category justice for the shear fact that it is truly brilliant. I intend to do more mocs along this twisted thought in the future. Thank you Henrik. The tombstone was tricky. The right half of the "Z" kept falling over. It's just a cheese wedge on a jumper plate. Quoting Delatron 3000 Well i'm late to this party, but you know I think this is brilliant. Style-wise you hit the nail bang on the head, visually and in your script. Breaking the forth wall had me chuckling and breaking into song at the end was perfect. All the figs are great (including the chicken) but I think Fozzie is my fave of the bunch. Why are Lego not doing Muppets? I would happily buy everything.... I know I told you elsewhere but it is sad to hear about Zoe, I do sympathise mate. On a slightly happier note, it would appear to be a VLUG vs VLUG semi-final. I really hope we get the most bananas category yet - you may even get a chance to build a movie scene ;) Let's put on a show.....
XD Put on a show? No doubt Stu, no doubt! I am absolutely looking forward to this round. (Mainly because I think the movie categories have all been exhausted. LMAO) Never even contemplated getting this far in all honesty, just ran with the ideas as best I could. It has been an honor to participate so far but competing against you will be the icing on the cake. Can't wait! As for the Muppets line of Lego, I've been wanting that for as long as I've been wanting the SW line. One down... Actually, I think Disney owns the rights. Might be in the near future. Thank you Stu also for your sympathy. I know you lost your own pooch some time back, and your idea to build a cathartic memorial is one I will definitely do, in addition to this one. The really weird thing is, I lost two friends (human) to cancer earlier this year, but this death was the one that stings the most, BY FAR! Thank you again Stu, for everything. And, game on! ;)

Quoting clayton Marchetti First off Matt I'm very sorry to here about Zoe, they really are a part of the family. I can't believe you merged my two favorite films for this contest! This is the most brilliant and imaginative entry! I love how you created Waldorf and Statler and there box seat with the run down look. I can just see the camera going in circles between the three of them for a half hour :-). Ok 5 minutes. The figures are brilliant Kermit love the hat ,gonzo and fozzy . It's great that you had them rock paper chicken for it. I also like how you squeezed in the chef, brilliant. That was fantastic the way you built the memorial to Zoe . Brilliant entry brother ! Good luck in the finale.
Thank you so much Brother! Somehow I knew that if I could find someone I'd call brother, the one true gauge would be TGTBATU and The Muppet Movie: Great movies or the greatest movies? I'm not sure why it doesn't remotely surprise me that they are your favorites as well. They are so vastly different and yet so amazingly good. Just a fan of great storytelling I guess. Throw Singin' in the Rain in the mix and I'd be on cloud nine. (Yeah, I like musicals. So what. XD) Zoe was family and will be enormously missed. I hope to do a proper tribute later. She deserves it. Quoting Stuart Lucas Another top-notch build! Hilarious, nicely rendered characters, love the reworking of the script. Great stuff! I hope the judges don't mind you moving thingd around a bit to create the full scene. Looking forward to seeing your next foray into this sort of tomfoolery!
matt is my name and tomfoolery is my game! XD Thank you Stuart. I loved your DNA strand. Truly fantastic and elegant in a greatly feared category. Outstanding work! BTW my wife knew she liked you for a reason. ;) (She has a minor in biology focused on genetics.) I thought about the "snapshot" aspect of the last round and figured that the story was the key element here. I don't think a children's story can be told without context. I think they were after the specific recreation of an image last go, this time was the story. We'll see. Good luck to you, I think your bracket will be the tough call of the round!

Thank you Sam. Gotta love that chicken. I can see him joining me in some further adventures. ;)

Quoting Senator Chinchilla . That was hilarious! I've never seen the movie, but knowing classic westerns I'm pretty sure I get the general vague idea of what happened. The muppets are very convincing, and even the chicken has the right muppety qualities to him.
Thank you Senator. I am extremely pleased that someone I find absolutely hilarious finds my stuff funny. BTW does the chest count as a glove box? It opens. XD

Quoting Nick Barrett The People's Champion has knocked it out of the park again! I'm seriously impressed by the consistent brilliance of your MO builds and ideas, and they keep getting better. The Muppets are great and instantly recognizable, the story is perfect, but it's Waldorf and Statler who steal the show. You're looking about ready to win this thing.
Ha! Thank you Nick. "The People's Champion" ain't there yet. XD Thanks to Keith, I think I now have about 6 titles. Not bad for someone that doesn't even capitalize their name. XD XD XD Nick, I loved your Vanishing Point. I have gone back repeatedly to see how you achieved that bit of cleverness. Absolutely stunning! Looks like you're through, congrats. Hopefully I can join you. I think I need another title. XD

Quoting Matt Bace Wow, this is absolutely awesome! It definitely gave me a chuckle or two. The Muppetized version of the classic showdown scene is great by itself, but Statler and Waldorf really make the MOC. I'd love to see more of this type of thing. Good luck!
Thank you Matt. It just seemed so absolutely ridiculous, I had to go for it. S&W were my favorites so I had to get them in there somehow. And I definitely plan to do more of these "gritty reboots".

Quoting Pico van Grootveld Wow! That balcony scene is awesome, perfect lighting as well. Nice script as a whole, love the dug up treasure chest and rainbow bursting out. Sorry about your loss. I wish you good luck!
Thank you Pico. The script rework was vital to making it a children's story. Had to make it silly. ;)

Quoting Dave Kaleta Matt, I loved you concept right from the start. The opening photo of Statler and Waldorf has that sight sepia tone to it that matchs TGTBATU so well. Breaking the fourth wall is SO Muppets, and very cleverly done. I also appreciate your tribute to Zoe - any artist worth their salt can't help but bringing into their work their experiences and emotions. Best of luck with the judges. ~DK
Thank you Dave. The sepia is pure morning sunlight, glad you caught that. It was my intent to get that soft, yet blinding light that Sergio was famous for. It always added to the grittiness of his movies. I never knew what "fourth wall" was until it was explained to me. I always saw it as a strictly Muppet technique. I'm slow. ;) And as for Zoe, I have no choice but to bring her along for the ride. That sort of wonderful impact is pleasantly indelible. Thanks again Dave.

Quoting El Barto ! Wow, Matt! There's a lot to comment on in this one! First off, sorry to hear about Zoe, that's a tough one, but nicely worked into the build. Great characters, you really captured that whole open-mouth-smile thing the Muppets always had. And the chicken stole the show!! Awesome entry, and good luck with them judges!!!
Thank you Barto. I truly love the Muppets. I grew up on them and they hold a special place in my heart. I knew when these guys made me smile, I was done. The chicken, however, makes me laugh hysterically. XD He's a keeper.

While I like your opponents "idea" a tad better, I think your entry takes the cake. I almost called you out on having two builds as opposed to one, but then I realized it's something of a story category and your opponent has two also. Congratulations, you've got my vote!

First off Matt I'm very sorry to here about Zoe, they really are a part of the family.
