Looking at the design in hindsight I realise the arms are a little too long. I may revisit the design a second time to make as few more changes.
The blue version features slightly shorter arms, but it occurred to me this morning (18/11/13) that perhaps it is the legs that are a little short.
What went well...?
- When I discovered Alex's fabulous Beachcomber figure I was taken by the simplicity of the leg design and how neatly it compressed. I've been trying to figure out a way to incorporate the technique into one of my designs. I've had the idea in my head for ages of a fighter design where the "robot" folded up into the cockpit while the wings and weapons hung from his back as a backpack. While this isn't the design I imagined, it is pretty close.
- The reversed wing design is perhaps one of the most striking aesthetic choices here. Some of the vent greebling turned out quite well and I love how the front section looks so tooled up for battle.
- Comparing this to last years final design it is instantly noticeable that I've literally reversed the design. In the 2012 version the legs formed the front fork and the arms and back pack formed the engines at the rear. This time, the back pack forms the fork and the legs the engines. This results curiously in a much smaller and more compact vehicle, but also an oddly proportioned robot form.
What didn't go so well...?
- To be fair I think I've made a much better job of hiding the arms on these things before. In fact the whole folding around the fuselage idea is so lazy as to be almost insulting. It leaves far too much open space in the centre of the craft in vehicle mode.
- Also I hoped to incorporate the front fork more smoothly to the silhouette.
- Sadly this November I'm pushed for time and will not be able to make multiple updates before the end of the month. So that pretty much means this is going to remain slightly unfinished. While there are some clever elements, and stuff I really want to take a second or third try at, I think that will have to wait for Novvember 2014.
- Looking at the blue design I can see some very simple ways I can turn this into a Neo-classic space version, but at the present that would be purely a cosmetic change for my own amusement.
- Had I got the time I normally spend on these things, here is a short list of possible updates:
* lengthen the legs to match the proportions of the arms, and possibly extend torso accordingly.
* figure out a way to make the wings part of the backpack and not the arms.
* add weapons in robot mode.
* find a more satisfying way of disguising the arms to provide a neater silhouette when viewed from above and below.
* hide the head better.
THE FINE PRINT:
To anyone downloading this design please be aware that it is the posed version of the WHITE design converting between modes may be tricky and I'd advise the following steps:
1. click the round part of the knee joint INSIDE the leg to turn it, clicking the outside will select the greebles and not the joint.
2. remove or completely rotate the guns on the wings 180 before attempting to pose the figure, they restrict the hinges.
3. you will need to move the arms, wings and head out of the way before rotating the chest part to form the cockpit. I would recommend doing this stage last.
4. posing the forearms can be tricky with the wings hinged at the 30 degree angle shown, position them at 90 degrees for transformation and posing in robot form.
5. rotate the waist and head 180 degrees, you can reverse the direction of the legs by rotating at the thigh, but this places the holes in the back of the leg on the OUTSIDE.
6. rotate the upper arm at the mid point to place the elbow joint in the right direction, otherwise the elbow bends in/out rather than up/down.
