A young man finishes his journey as he nears the castle...
About this creation
For round 2 of the 2013 Builder Triathlon.
I chose the following category:
One Shot Wonder:

Build a scene of just one photo showing forced perspective.

It was quite a challenge to fit all of this detail into one photo! The house in particular was very complex, aside from the detailed stonework, the beam that marks the beginning of the second floor is tilted, and the angle between the front wall (hard to see) and the side wall is a bit larger than a right angle. As such, it was a fun challenge to build this MOC.

It's also one of my largest MOCs, at about 48x48.

Thanks for viewing!

I love that wall! Great work, such a nice cover photo!

I totally agree.

Quoting Reynolds . I can't say I completey like this moc...I think the building is commonly used by the past builders of MOCpages. I also think that the pathway could use more work and detail put into it. And finally, there should be some texture on the grass, it looks too plain...
You know...it's a little ironic seeing that come from you.

Quoting Kai Bernstein Looking at this again, I think mountains on the bare area to the right, or flanking or behind the castle, would give it a more authentic feel; they'd pull one more into the moc's world.
Yeah, I agree. I was planning on incorporating a waterfall of some sort (and lots of more buildings and trees, but I digress) but laziness and time constraints won over...

Would you be able to do better? I know it's not perfect, and I agree about the grass, but I quite like the texture on the building, it's not done often (I've seen only two builders ever use somewhat similar techniques) and the pathway is actually quite detailed, it's just hard to see from the one picture (if I was able to include a behind the scenes photo you'd notice for instance that as the path gets "farther away" the 2x2 rounds transition to 1x1 rounds and so on... Just one of the many details that you can miss with just one photo...)

Quoting cyberfrank 2010 great fp! lovely scene, and I like that you included animals!
Thanks Frank! Yeah, I've always thought that the Lego animals were way too big compared to minifigures, but in the slightly larger than minifigure scale foreground they work perfectly!

Quoting Mr. Cab Amazing! I would probably not have advanced into the third round anyways against entries like this... In other words, awesome job!
Well 8 entries move on... You were actually one of the two people who I was surprised to see not move onto round 2. Maybe it's just because I care about things like style more than other people, but the color choices and layouts of your landscaping were really impressive and effective. Maybe it's not realistic, but it really looks good and shows uniqueness.

Quoting Hen Peril ... Wow! Great perspective, texture, colour choice and composition! The walls are reminiscent of Derfel Cadarn (which is impressive) and I love the way you've accentuated the vanishing point by using the colour change on the house. (It would be even more amazing if you could skew the black windows to fit the perspective as well) *bows to the greater talent* ;)
Thanks Hen! I've been really impressed by both of your entries so far, you're one of my personal favorites in this contest. I'm glad you make the comparison to Derfel Cadarn, he was my main inspiration for this build. I agree about the windows but I didn't really want to add even more complexity to the house. Maybe later, if I make something like this again...

Quoting Caleb (Back from the Philippines) This is really good, however, you do realize you could have just built a house and added the forced castle. See, because unless that house is HUGE the forced perspective makes no sense.
Yeah I know, maybe it is a big house or something. I just wanted to add a bit more technique work to the build. Thanks anyway!

Quoting Kai Bernstein Ooh, that's awesome! I love the texturing and look of the building to the left, and that castle in the distance is well-made. The angle, too, is very good. Had it been taken outside, though, the natural lighting would've add a lot to it.
Thanks Kai! I'd have to liked to have taken it outside, but the size (and, to a lesser degree, slight fragileness) would make that pretty difficult.
