M.O. Round 7: matt rowntRee vs. Nick Barrett - Cirque de Filet
Circus Fiasco What ensues when a circus act goes terribly wrong?
About this creation
The link to my fantastic opponent Nickís moc is HERE .
The link to the MocOlympics is HERE .

Step right up and donít be shy, because you will not believe your eyes! (Ouch, The Tubes reference. Sorry.) Yes, here we are at the circus. I remember going there as a child and realizing one thing: I hate clowns. Iím not sure exactly why it is, but I really hate clowns. Might have something to do with reading Stephen Kingís It at an early, impressionable age or it may be my ability of circumspection that peers around the painted facades and questions what exactly is going on with these guys. Either way, I still hate clowns. Creepy is fine to an extent, but clowns are the pinnacle of creepy.

So, when given the opportunity to express this facet of my personality, I jumped in with both feet and no oversized, goofy red shoes. I asked myself, ďHow can I sacrifice as many clowns as possible in one ĎCircus Fiascoí?Ē (Economy of motion, you know.) YAHTZEE! A clown car is full of clowns; destroy the car. Duh. But, how? SHAZAM! By using artillery, of course; and, there just happens to be a cannon right over there (Sorry Ted, your sacrifice will not go unappreciated.) Now, seeing that Technic Ted, the Human Cannonball, is neither explosive nor incendiary, his projectile-ness needs to be more strategic (Apologies to Topsy for not informing her of Tedís prior career; hopefully it doesnít compromise his further, wonderful adventures which you can find HERE .) CHA-CHA-CHA-CHIA! The ďshotĒ must be perfectly timed to force the clown car into the lion cage. The rest is up to a hearty, carnivorous appetite. Not sure where clowns fit into the food chain, perhaps they are down there with Skittles.

Taste the rainbow!

Trapeze eye view.

Those bars can keep in predatory cats but can't keep out a bug. Ironic, eh?

ow.

Well, it looks like The Amazing Amanda should have gone with the chain mail suit instead of the skimpy tux. But I'm sure the full body cast will still show off her assets. "Charisma" always shines through, just ask Jane.

Big bug go squish.

PSA. Learn from Technic Ted, kids: Listen to your mother, eat your vegetables, pay attention in school, and... Ooooh, hey! A glove box.

Awww, kitty wants to play.

Now THAT'S a brilliant idea Professor Pickles. Squirt the tiger with water. Yeah, they like that.

Hope that barrel is tiger-proof Slappy. I don't suppose you recall the old Exxon ad, "Put a tiger in you tank"?

And as for you Pennywise, can't "float" your way out of this one, can you?

That's it Senator Spackle! you should be able to outrun him, eeeeeasy.

Aw, and you were so close Colonel Elastic Pants. Thank goodness you got those extra stretchy ones or else you MIGHT be in trouble.

It would appear that not everyone in the audience fled in panic.

For these two, the greatest show on Earth just got a whole lot better.

What sort of sick, twisted, six foot tall, blonde pony-tailed, red backwards hardhat wearing, clown hating fiend would do such a horrible thing? Wait, a hundred bucks? Never mind.

Although, I think he'd do it for free.

AND NOW FOR SOME DETAILS BOYS AND GIRLS!

The not-so-grandstands.

Please note that not a bit of trash is in the trash cans.

Why, you ask?

'CAUSE THAT'S THE CARNY WAY!!!

In spite of there actually being safety railing, as per carny code, their sole purpose is to hold drinks and tie balloons to.

Don't worry, these bleachers are still rickety and dangerous.

Why, you ask again?

'CAUSE THAT'S THE CARNY WAY!!!

And we loves it!

By the way, there's an extra hundred if you can take care of the music, too.

New tigger toys! And they're so colorful.

Light meat, dark meat, and now multicolored meat? Eh, why not?

Aaaaaand where do you think you're going?

Just like Christmas! (please let it be a pony.)

Nom, nom, nom. Tastes just like chicken!

Da bug.

Da bug, no people.

Kinda proud how this turned out.

Not so suspensiony.

Da rear. 1600 of course.

The interior. Yes, I put in the interior. jeeeeesh.

Everyone back in the car. Those two should be safe back there.

-coughsardinescough-

A pair of jokers.

The parting shot. Bon Apetit!

Fourth wall: Firstly, I canít thank the judges enough for this absolutely fantastic category. You guys and gal could not have ended these wonderful MocOlympics on a better note. Additionally, I wish to also thank you for giving me the opportunity to stretch my legs and really push my bounds. I have found skills and talents I never knew existed. For that, I will be eternally grateful.

Secondly, I want to thank Nick Barrett, truly one of the greatest builders I have ever seen. Nick, I said before in Decisive Action that you were the General that I feared the most. Here in the MOs, it was exactly the same sentiment. Iím proud to be included here, Iím amazed to have made it this far, Iím shocked to actually compete against you, and Iím honored to be in the same light. I wish you all the best and a heartfelt good luck.

And lastly, I want to again thank all of you watching over these MocOlympics. There have been an incredible amount of stellar mocs that I am truly privileged to be counted amongst. I hope that everyone has enjoyed the fine showing and know that it was a great pleasure for me to compete and garner your praise and favor regardless of the final outcome. This was in every sense of the term a magnificent blast.

Thank you!

matt

Quoting Joonmin . Aww,, it is a sad news that you lost. But this creation was just stunning! The whole thing is just realistic,,, i mean not the category but the looks:) The category must've been hard but you made the entry just amazing. The clowns and the fierce animals...! You surely captured the looks and the scenery! Overall, this moc is stunning and mind blowing awesome! I love it!
Thank you Joonmin! I don't consider it sad at all to loose to a great builder like Nick. In fact I'm actually proud that I could push his talent further than he expected. My only goal throughout was to put 100% into every moc. I accomplished that well beyond my own expectations. To that end, it's not a loss at all. Plus, a little clown carnage is always worth the price of admission. ;)

Quoting David Roberts I love all of the characters in this big MOC but especially the clowns and cats. My particular favourite is the clown having his trousers stretched, in true slapstick style.
Thank you David! Had the idea early on about the pants and just had to do it. Both he and the cheetah have actually found a permanent home with a great friend. Hopefully they both survive the trip. =]

Quoting david drake this is amazing! Love the brickbuilt tiger and black panther! And those clowns, is one of them a Krusty? I'm sure like an episode of Chopped where the competitors are closely tied, the judges had to make a tough call and come up with a metric like the inverse of the number of flowers used to decide on a winner. But hey, a Silver Medal is still a spectacular achievement, and something to be very proud of, unlike the French swim team in the 2008 Olympics... Kudos on a race well run.
Thank you David! I'm actually very proud of my complete showing here in the MOs. I never held anything back and lost to a worthy opponent. Now as far as the French swim team... Well let's just say that Lezak put them in their place. Second. ;) And I didn't include a Krusty seeing as he is the only clown I like. XD Thanks again!

Thank you very much Joe! It was such an honor to compete let alone go up against Nick in the finals no less. I'm proud of what I pulled out and the fact that I didn't hold anything back. Thank you Hans! I've been truly humbled and honored by everything this year. This has been the toughest and happiest year at the same time: I've lost several close friends and gained many more. Discovering this wonderful community and being embraced by VLUG has been the most wonderful thing to happen to me in a VERY long time. To contribute to MP was a pure joy, to make you guys in VLUG proud of my showing is a distinguished prestige that I will forever hold dear. Thank you for everything!

Quoting Mark McPeek Wow, this is absolutely amazing. I cannot think of any adjectives to properly describe just how wonderful your brick-builds are. (And that bug of course!! ;) You've put on a heck of a show, Matt, and you have my undying respect. Congratulations on second place and incredible work!
Thank you very much Mark! Wow works for me. ;) And a hearty Wow back at you for your own performance here in the MOs. I personally have a level of respect for everyone, it is always up to them to either keep it at that level, raise it, or unfortunately in some cases lower it. It has more to do with attitude than anything else. It is my only hope that everyone can see that a good attitude is one thing, but a great attitude is exponentially another. So, keep up the good work and by example be encouraging and have fun. It ALWAYS pays off in the end. ;)

Quoting Starscream Soundwave The big cats are fantastic, I want to build one for myself! The actual build is mind blowing, there's just so much going on. Love the Bug. You vs Nick certainly is a clash of the titans. I'm not sure which one I prefer, glad I'm not judging! Good luck Matt.
Thank you SS! The cats pushed my thinking and skill to new heights I'm proud to say. They all started with the 1X1 top clip for the nose. That little piece set the scale for everything else. Getting dynamic poses was vital and they all started with the lion's turning and tilting head. That was the point at which everything was going to have motion. Or in some cases, frozen in fright inaction. ;) It was that moment in time snapshot that expresses the entire "fiasco" that I felt was more important.

Quoting Pico van Grootveld Wow! From the dropped ice cream to the iron eating lion, I can look at this for quite a while and find lots of Little things to enjoy. The details are terrific. You really presented the 'Fiasco' aspect in an awesome way. You and your opponent are both more than worthy finalists indeed!
Thank you Pico! It is for keen eyes like yours that I built for the entire "fiasco" and added so much detail. I kept thinking about a real circus and what anyone would find there. As an artist, I pick up all the little details and store them in my cavernous head. All the commentary regarding the bleachers is from real life. Rickety, unsafe, haphazard, messy, empty trash cans with trash everywhere around them. It was all my own observational commentary on the "Greatest Show on Earth" and I'm glad people like you can spot all the nuance. Thanks again Pico!

Thank you Graham! In my eyes, I've gained more than a title, so it can never be considered a loss. It is the fact that I too can't wait to see what I come up with next that makes it an uncontested win for me. ;)

Thank you Senator! As I was building it, I kept thinking of how YOU would tackle it. That, of course, meant that it needed a glove box. XD So, to you sir, I dedicate the VW Beetle. However, I am quite certain that it will not roll down your driveway as the wheels are not attached. ;)

Quoting Chris Phipson To both Nick and Matt. Gentlemen, you both put in one HECK of a show here in the finals! Congratulations to both of you! Nick, I loved your tent design and the elephant was killer! Matt, I can't tell you how expressive all of your characters were! With the outcome already decided my vote is supurfluous. However, for the sake of closure, my vote would have gone to Matt. Thank you both SO much for a truly outstanding showing throughout these entire games! It's really a grueling building schedule and you both knocked it out of the park at every stage of the game! Both of your prizes have already been mailed out so be looking for them. Again, congratulations to both of you and I look forward to seeing more great things from both of you in the near future! ~ Chris.
Innumerable thanks to you Chris for everything you do here for the MOs as well as MP itself! Your tireless efforts and enthusiasm for this humble hobby of ours makes us strive to excel into new adventures with the ABS. I can't ever express how much all this has meant to me. You and this competition have forged a new revelation in my own Artistic expression. For that, I can never thank you enough. Quoting Leda Kat =^..^= OMG those big cats Matt, those cats are the most creative, adorable, lifelike/cartoony, brilliant creatures I've ever seen made of LEGO. This is your greatest creation to date in my opinion. I've enjoyed your entries in this contest so much. I've watched all your wonderful brick built characters and animals and the flawless scenes you put them into with excitement, because with each entry you do you just get better than the last. The faces and the paws of those big cats, so much love for this.
Thank you Leda! Definitely a lot of love went into them. Each one was challenging and a blast. Beautiful observation with my work getting more polished, I greatly appreciate that. I'd like to think that I'm improving as well but it is always a wonderful thing to hear. I have been proud of all my builds but this competition seems to have brought out something I never knew I had in me. I only wish others would take the leap into the fire as well. Quoting Mr. Xenomurphy Similar to David, Iíve had (and still have) some really tough and bad days. So bad, that I almost forgot about the MO. Almost. Iím a bit late and this yearís winner is already certain, but congratulations to both of you, Nick and Matt, for making it thus far and for two mind-blowing entries. You both came up with a firework of ideas and many parts of your final entries are fantastic enough to be stand-alone MOCs. Matt, congratulations for winning the second place in the MocOlympics 2013. Though Iím not in a laughing mood at the moment, it is exactly what happened when I saw your entry. I love how cute your fierce creatures look like and the clowns are fantastic. The VW Kšfer is also a brilliant creation. If I had to decide, you would have gotten my vote due to your hilarious figures, but Iím glad I didnít need to vote, since both entries are ace!
Thank you Thor! I greatly appreciate the vote and all the input throughout these MOs. And I think the greatest pleasure any of us can have is to make others enjoy life just a little bit more. And if a single smile or a hearty guffaw is the net result, then I have truly won. In the end, that is more important to me. ;)

Quoting Tom Remy Now, that's a show I would pay to watch! I hate clowns too... As a kid they scared me, as a teenager they bored me, and now they're making me nervous. And I love cats and bee(a)tles so... That's a perfect build! And just to add a little criticism, as much as I love the stage and everything that happens there, I'm a little disappointed by the surroundings... I hope you had a big time with this year's MO and also hope to see you again next year! Anyway, congratulations on making it this far and enjoy your prizes!
Thank you Tom! I see we share a spot in the books. Oh, well. Second ain't all that bad. I appreciate the input. I agree that the surroundings are a bit lacking, but it was my focus on the "fiasco" itself that prompted that. I intended everything to be individualistic and building the entire audience just wasn't an option especially at this scale of detail. Still, It could have been tunneled into a single shot with less grandstands. Hindsight. Thank you again! BTW the title was a play on the filet being a prime cut of meat. Rare please. ;)

Quoting David Alexander Smith Making us judges work again! I've been offline after a couple of tough days, only to be greeted by two superb final entries on my return. I love the clowns and the bug. The big cats made me laugh. Superb little balloon details too. So much to look at and so much to like. In the end I had to go with Nick, and it really did boil down to the technical excellence of his tent. Still, you have been amazing throughout and your Forbidden Planet build was my MOC of the contest.
Thank you David! Nick's tent is truly spectacular. I appreciate everything and Forbidden Planet was a delight for me to build. With it, you have started something I intend to expand upon in the future. Get these whippersnappers appreciatin' the classics! ;) BTW http://www.mocpages.com/group.php/23443 get over there. Quoting Nick Barrett Well, that was fun! I can tell you I pulled out all the stops for this one, and it turns out I needed to. We will cross swords again, my friend! Although, I'd really like it if we can be on the same side for once...
Now that is a proposition I can quite easily sink my teeth into. We shall take over the world! Muahahahaha! ;) It truly was fantastically fun! When I first saw the brackets, I hoped that IF I got to the finals, that it'd be against you. And there we are. Phenomenal show my friend! You are truly a high caliber builder and it was my pleasure and honor to battle you. Every one of your mocs, and not just here, are nothing short of brilliant. I'm honestly happy for you and know that we will battle against and with each other in the future. You, my friend, have played well! Enjoy the glory and I toast your victory! Cheers, good sir! Cheers!

Quoting Delatron 3000 Nick and Matt, Iím leaving the same comment on both your builds to avoid showing any favouritism Ė after all we have an Englishman and a VLUG member in the final. Though in my opinion it could have been an English VLUG member and then I would be really happy ;) Nick, I adore the big top. Itís a massive undertaking and itís superbly realised in the brick. You have utilised large builds throughout the contest this year and it has really worked for you Ė your control of the various scales has been masterful. The Elephant is very nicely shaped too. I have a confession though: I REALLY do not enjoy maxi/ technic/ homemaker figs, and that is colouring my opinion of the whole as they play such a prominent part in the presentation of your build. Matt (and lots of the commenters on your build), why no love for clowns? Clowns are great! Your clowns in particular are a great selection of parts use, colour and posing. Likewise, the cats are very, very good and full of character. The car is really well done (with a cheeky technic fig through the windscreen Ė trashtalk by building?) and you have shown the damage in very clever ways, while there are a lot of neat filler details in the stands and the destroyed cage. If I were a judge, I would probably just give this to Matt, based on the variety of built elements and, I feel, marginally better representation of the Ďdisasterí part of the category. But then, Matt dissed clowns and set big cats on them too and I do really, really like Nickís big top. But I feel about technic figs like it seems everybody else feels about clowns! And I am just a bitter, confused, clown-loving, losing semi-finalist and not a judge. So I will say congratulations to both of you on reaching this stage, putting out consistently good builds throughout this marathon event, keeping us entertained round after round and being excellent examples of the MOCpages community. Well done gents and the best of luck with your remaining judges.
Stu, you are truly the best! Your honesty is invaluable and your humor is unrivaled. Your clown love however... XD I adore your input in everything, not just here, but amidst the entire MOs as well. You're like that crotchety uncle in the background that speaks his mind regardless of the toes it steps on, instilling wisdom and insight that makes everyone stop and listen AND think about everything. Trust me my friend, that's a great thing! The MOs would not be complete without the Delatron. I toast you, my friend with a beer in my hand, (and maybe a little scotch later as well) thanking you for everything. Cheers mate!

Quoting MCLegoboy ! This is a tough call. Nick has actions take place in real time and an audience, but you have all those different cats and a Beatle. A very tough call on who did what better. A fantastic Finale to the MocOlympics.
Thank you MC! I agree, a tough call. As it should be. ;)

Quoting Matt Bace Wow! You've blown me away once again. Everything in this MOC is fantastic. The hungry cats are really good, and it is great that you chose to build a variety of different types of cats rather than just all tigers or lions. The clown car looks great too, especially with Ted going through the front windshield. But I think the clowns themselves are probably the best part, particularly Col. Elastic Pants, my personal favorite. The whole idea, including the clever title, is just fantastic (especially since I pretty much share you sentiments regarding clowns -- the only one I ever liked was Krusty).
Thank you Matt! God bless Krusty. Yeah, Colonel Elastic Pants was fun, also, I didn't take a photo of it, but I built his bare behind showing in the open pants as well. Oooops. I wanted everything to have definitive personality which is why I spent most of the time on the characters and cats. I didn't want them to look the same. Each one had it's own challenges and they were all a blast. Especially the carnage. ;)

Quoting Ape Fight Sharing your sentiment with clowns, this scene brings me much, much joy. As always, your commentary is funnier than a clown will ever be : ) and the trash can picture made me laugh the moment I saw it! Whilst a little apprehensive it may be a sign of the coming apocalypse, seeing a (superb) car here and not in Nick's entry, your vehicular carnage is one of the highlights of the MOCing year. Congratulations upon reaching the final, this wonderful MOC, and a possible win. 10/10 Please send my gratitude to the cats.
Thank you Ape! Yeah, clown violence is a wonderful thing. And, it feeds the cats for the night. Win, win! ;) I hoped that I could out car the car guy, but he took a different route. Oh well. I'm glad a fellow car guy enjoyed the bug. Happy apocalypse! XD

Quoting Nick Barrett Wow, where to start... If it came down to your cats vs my elephant, the cats would win... plus you built a car I'd have been pleased with. Also, you killed many, many clowns and this can only be a good thing. A brilliant moc from a brilliant builder. For me, this is too close to call, so good luck to you sir!
Nick, thank you so much for everything! And, of course, an honest congratulations on your fine performance. Truly a memorable battle. I figured that you were going to throw a car in there but you didn't. Well played. Keep 'em guessing. Loved battling with you in DA and equally loved the opportunity to engage you once more. I am truly honored to have done so and hope that you had to work for it. ;) You have proven yourself a fantastic builder and a quality bloke, hope to have further adventures with and against you. I think we could push each other to new heights of wonderment. Thank you again and congrats! ~Your friend and opponent, matt.

Quoting Stuart Lucas It's a rare pleasure to see a MOC constructed with so much imagination, humour, and sheer vindictive dislike of clowns! I particularly like the VW Beetle, and the janitor and spectator, they add great character to the scene. Another truly awesome build, you definitely deserve to be one of the finalists from the consistently fantastic quality of your entries in this contest! I'm leaning a little towards Luke's assessment that Nick's is more unified and eye-catching, but on the other hand yours captures the whole choatic disaster in a snapshot, and has so many fantastic details that you may yet win the day. Good luck!
Thank you Stuart! Two different approaches, I had hoped that detail and pure chaos would win the day but alas... Oh, well. These guys and cats were a true blast to build. Proud of my showing and the car and I hope I made Nick work for it. ;) I guess STUDS got their revenge. Just kidding. XD Jane threw me, yeah, that was it. Curses Jane!

Quoting Tim C I'll tell you what the tragedy is here, Matt: Somehow I hadn't marked you as a favorite builder to this point. Don't know how that happened. Fixed it. So this is one of the most entertaining MOCs I've seen yet. The jungle cats, specifically the black panther, are built perfectly and the suggestions of ensuing violence, particularly on clowns, really speaks to the side of me that loved part one of Kill Bill. The cage, the car, and the stretchy pants are especially impressive. I could go on all night. Very well done, and best of luck in the M.O.
Thank you Tim! For both the comments and making me a fav. Oh, yeah! KB1 = Fantastic! I would play the theme from Ironsides if it will help expedite the clown violence. I'm sure kitties like it as background ambience. ;)

I've enjoyed your entries in this contest so much. Quoting Dave Kaleta Matt, The ways the bars bend from the car crashing trough the cage, the tire tracks of the car in the sand, the off kilter wheels of the clown car, the small bits of texture created by the 1x1 round plates in the tigers back, the colors and shapes of the three clowns standing, the bent foot of Senator Spackle, those amazing elastic pants, the crazy arms of those weirdos in the crowd, CHEWBACCA BALLOON inside joke, the lion in repose, the clown in the back seat of the car, all these and many, many more are reasons I love this build. Congratulations on finishing the marathon. I wish you the very best of luck with the judges. ~DK
Thank you Dave! It is keen eyes like yours that give me the greatest pleasure in building insanity like this. All the details I think of and add I always fear get lost in the melee of color and poor photography skill. But when you are able to spot them, it is always vindicating and wonderful. I always build for my own satisfaction, but there are a handful of people, you are definitely one, that I forever look forward to their valued input. Thanks again Dave, for everything.

Quoting LukeClarenceVan The Revanchist Matt, thank you for a long spell of incredible builds. You pulled out all the stops, and really stepped up to the plate. Final round! Hat's off. I love how your scene looks like a FarSide cartoon - the janitor figure is spectacular. I also like the black panther as you absolutely nailed the feline shape. The clowns are hilarious, and your buggy could have been built by Nick for all I know. Really a terrific MOC. However, I feel like the colours could be a bit more unified. You have a lot more gaps and rough patches compared to Nick's, which detracts a bit from the visual impact. I can't help but think you may have sacrificed a bit of unity for size... All the same, a build any MOCer would love to have in their portfolio. Ultimately, Nick gets my vote though. Best of luck with the other judges!
Thank you Luke! Great input there and very much appreciated. I'm extremely pleased that you caught the Larson-esque quality I was aiming for. The roughness was perhaps a bit unavoidable given the size I wanted to convey in order to get more built and dynamic characters and cats. A sacrifice that I willfully took. I wanted more of the "fiasco" to shine through. Plus, have you seen a circus? Talk about shabby. XD Thank again sincerely and I honestly do understand the judgment.

Quoting David . You've got it!! :D Excellent job, the trash everywhere is just so perfect. It's amazing how much they charge for popcorn, let alone the cotton candy. The tigers are awesome, and I love his special tiger-deterrent water. Where can I get a flower-full?
Thank you David! Not sure at all if I've got it quite yet. Nick's is fantastic. I instantly had an image of trash everywhere when I started thinking about the category, had to do it. As for the tiger-deterrent, there should be one available real soon. Slightly used. ;)

Quoting Chris Roach great work! - poor clowns, they are in trouble! Good luck with zee judges!
Thank you Chris! Unfortunately, I don't share the pity for the clowns. I just hope the cats don't get indigestion. ;)

Quoting Stephen Boe Undoubtedly a marvelous build! Every figure looks amazing, and the parts usage on the clowns are brilliant, but my favorite has to be the tiger!
Thank you Stephen! Each one was tricky in it's own way. I tried to be as clever and diverse as possible, I didn't want any of them to look alike. The tiger was crazy and definitely my favorite.

Yet another amazing build here, Chief! Love all the characters, cats and clowns especially. Lots of personality in the former, just the right amount of creepiness in the latter. And like LCVR said, they've got some classic Far Side expressions as they watch the mayhem. Congrats on getting to the final in your first MO run, and good luck with the judges!!

Brother! What a brilliant take on this category! I can't believe how life like the Cats are. That Bengal tiger is amazing. I love the Volkswagen bug it's just perfect inside and out. The damage to the car and the cage look realistic . All the clowns look hilarious I especially like the clown in the red hard hat :-) ha ha ha! . Just joshing you. The trash pile was a splendid touch. And last but not least the Chewie balloon , awesome. Congratulations brother!

For the first time, I can't decide whose entry is better. The judges are going to have a tough time picking from two such great entries!
