About this creation
My honorable opponent Lee Muzzy
MELO

Lee Muzzy vs. Alex Rode

“Nothing passes door and window here save moonlight and starlight and wind off the
hilltop.”

Goldberry, Tom Bombadil's wife, is telling the hobbits as they are going to bed that as long as they are at Tom's house, they will be safe. My conclusion? Build Tom Bombadil's house.

The Build:
I wasn't very happy with the roof, but I didn't have a whole lot of roof pieces. I guess it's a unique design. I tried not to clutter the build with bamboo leaf pieces, lel, so this is new. I was very happy with the rocks and tree. I was also somewhat pleased with the wall texture.

And some nice rocks. Apparently the picture doesn't want to show. Unfortunately I have spent 3 hours trying to get it to show, and now I will give up.

Nicely done. You are so creative with the brick. The details in the landscaping are so impressive and the house is well done. There is a nice balance between both.

Nice work Alex, but there are a few details that could be improved. First off, the tree. It looks a bit unnatural with on two leaves. I would suggest trying a different kind of tree, or using different colors of foliage you have more of. I also think the water could be improved a bit....perhaps you could do the loose studs technique? Or perhaps put a bit more foliage around the river so it looks more natural. Other than that, I think it's a strong build overall. I'm a bit surprised, and rather disappointed that you didn't make it to round....but there's always next year!

This is a great creation I personally love building things like this but this tops most good job

Thank you Ian, I'm sure you made the right decision. I hope to come back next year.
  January 20, 2014
Well that's it! I am made it, and I and happy about that. I would like to say that your build Alex was really well done. The landscape is perfectly balanced with the building. As for the building itself the way you made it have several rooms and the texture on the wall is really well done. I honestly wish that we could both proceed, but since there can only be one winner, on with the game. Thanks for being a great and worthy opponent. I hope you win a contest someday (if you haven't already that is)

First of all, I'm going to say that this was the toughest decision I've had to make this round. I labored over it for quite a while, and (as Lee is a personal friend) I even consulted another judge from Orthanc Bracket to ensure that bias was not playing a roll in my decision. From a purely aesthetic standpoint, I prefer Alex's build. It has better composition and looks a tad cleaner and professional. However, in every other regard, I prefer Lee's entry. While I'm not super impressed with the exterior of Lee's build, I think his interior is about equal with Alex's exterior. I also think that Lee's build is a lot more intriguing in terms of the category. He brought in many of the different components using some cool effects like forced-perspective. He also used some nice techniques that particularly stand out (e.g. chimney smoke, the fireplace, the armless mini-fig torsos for the sleeping hobbits, etc.). That said, I think Lee's build is more intriguing and has some really strong points and some weak points. Alex's entry, on the other hand, I don't find quite as interesting, but it's more balanced in terms of build quality. So...which do I choose? I'm going to give Mr. Muzzy the benefit of the doubt, despite the weak exterior of his build. Congratulations Lee! Your mix of a few clever techniques, strong relevance to the category, and a decent interior deign win you my vote! As for you Alex, I still like your build better from a strictly balanced aesthetic standpoint. It was a super hard decision for me, so hold your heads high both of you!
