Another Year Gone
About this creation
Well, my MOCiversary has gotten away from me again. Wow, two years an AFOL. Time to look at the year in review…LEGO style.

This year was a lot less productive than the last if you’re looking at just the quantity of the builds, (for the record, I spent six of the last twelve months on just three builds). But it was also a year of trying new things, making new discoveries, completing larger projects, and generally establishing myself, (personally if not publicly), as a serious builder.

I made my first order from Bricklink, as well as my second…and then my third. I went from that one time that I visited the nearest LEGO store, which is about an hour away from my house, to making regular trips to see what the PAB has in store for me. I built my first humanoid mech, and had such a great time doing it that I went right back to the drawing board and built my second. I built my first SHIP. Then I built my second. The second was for a contest that required me to build a SHIP in a month, and I made it, (with literally seconds to spare, but I made it). I interrupted and dismantled a MOC in progress for the sake of a contest, (if that doesn’t qualify one as a serious builder, then I don’t know what does). I’ve added a lot of color to my MOCs compared to the previous year. I had one of my MOCs blogged on The Brothers Brick for the first time. The same one was blogged on BrickNerd. I got closer to winning my first contest than I ever have. (In fact, it was so close, I would call it painfully close. Congrats again, Pico). Bestowed upon me has been the highest honor to date that I won’t risk jinxing by talking about it just yet. I have even been collaborating with another fellow MOCpages resident for a 2014 BrickWorld display, (details to come). Despite having only 9, (or 8 and ½ maybe), builds to show for the past year, what a busy year it’s been.

If I may get all mushy for a moment, this community continues to be very important to me. Over this past year, I have maintained established online friendships, watched others fizzle as some of my favorite builders have become scarce, or completely absent, (where have you gone, Z?!). I have become at least as active on Flickr as I am here and seen new acquaintances begin. I have watched beginning builders become really good builders. Really good builders become great builders. As well as great builders finally get some of the recognition they have long deserved. (Talking about you, Luke. Talking about you, Pete. Talking about you, David, as well as you, David. And that’s just to name the first four that come to mind). And I have seen great builders that have already gotten the recognition continuously one-up themselves. The imagination and ingenuity of this community never ceases to amaze me, nor has it hit its maximum potential for outdoing itself. My favorite ship, SHIP, castle, mech, figure, or overall MOC has been replaced many times over, a fair portion of which has happened just over this past year. The people that I have met in this community as well as those that I watch silently from afar continue to drive me to be better, and I don’t know if a higher compliment can be paid. I thank you with the sincerity that I reserve for these MOCiversaries for your enthusiasm and support, as well as your continued excellence in the art of patiently putting pieces of plastic together to create great things.

Okay, enough of that. I promised myself I wouldn’t cry.

So, let’s see what I did this past year.

Maximus - my first ever humanoid mech.

Galaxus - an improvement to what I accomplished with Maximus.

The Exodus - my first ever SHIP. This was also probably my most important MOC to date. It taught me a lot about shaping my spacecraft with plates and click joints, a technique that I have used to some extent on every one of my subsequent spaceships. This SHIP was blogged on both The Brothers Brick and BrickNerd.

Lil' Scavenger - the beginning of a salvage ship project.

A SHIPtember Death - dismantling this MOC was the most painful moment of my time as an AFOL. I was thrilled with how it was turning out, but SHIPtember arrived before I was able to complete it. However, it led me to the most fun I've had in a LEGO competition. A fitting sacrifice, in my opinion.

The Insurrection - my SHIPtember entry. No accolades to speak of. That doesn't speak to my satisfaction in the results of this build, but rather the quality of the competition.

Skipper - the most color other than the bleys I've ever included in a ship. One of my favorite builds to date.

SS1 - Gladiator Class Starfighter - my entry in a hard-fought competition. First prize could not have been more deserved than by he who won.

VV-13 Vindicator - my second Vic Viper. Definitely my favorite of the two.

Thanks for sharing this walk through memory lane with me. I hope your 2013 was good to you and here's to a great 2014.

Quoting Pico van Grootveld If I can crash at your place, no problem ;) I think the plane ticket across the pond will cost a bit too much though..coming from Holland.. Plus, the mrs and I have a third baby underway due around that time of year, so I think I'll cozy follow things from behind the laptop!
Hahaha! I didn't realize we were separated by an entire ocean. I expect I won't see you there then. I don't think my wife would be too keen with a house guest I introduce as, "Hey, Honey, I would like you to meet a guy I met on the internet.";) So, laptop it is. Sounds like you have your hands full over there, Pico. Congrats on number three!

Oh to live up to the expectations of Garry King;) Thanks for the compliment, Garry. You are one of my most highly respected builders here on the pages, so those words from you mean all the more. And I expect some great things from you this year as well;)

Hey Tim! Looks like I just missed this one.... Apologies, I've seen a dramatic decrease of activity from me here on MP. Anyways, congratulations on yet another year! I'm glad to have added you as a fave; I love the work you put into each and every spacecraft! Here's to many more ;-)

Thanks for the compliment, sir. I could easily say the same for you, (though I think you turn out a lot more top quality builds than me).

Quoting Peter Mowry Congrats again on the awesome year Tim! Great to always see your stuff anywhere I see it. Until your next build and cant wait to meet you at Brickworld!
Thanks, Pete. I know that your year didn't yield a lot of builds, but that Marquis was a victory for the ages. In fact, I think it was a MOC featured by TBB in their review of last year's BW. Look forward to meeting you as well.

Quoting matt rowntRee Tim, THAT was a year for the ages! And, in our case, the aged. As AFOLs we have cemented our sensibilities with regard to design and aesthetic. It's just the natural process. With you, I've seen progress of leaps and bounds from spectacular to galactically spectacular. It's difficult to break from a perceived style into exploration and discovery. And it is the primary factor that places you at the top of my list of favorites. I can't wait to see what you bring to BW as it is truly shaping up to be quite the event. See you there. Excellent year, cheers to many more!
Hey, Matt. I have really enjoyed seeing top notch MOCs coming from your corner. Some of the most interesting MOCs of the year. I mistakenly left you out of my list of great builders getting the recognition. The Inception MOC and your revenge on those evil clowns stand out in my mind immediately. I believe it was Poltergeist that made me appreciate that MOC the most. Thank you for the high compliments. Very flattering. I'm also thrilled to hear, (or, read, I guess), that you'll be attending BW this year. We may have to toss back a beer, or eight, while we're there;)

Yeah, I think so. I wish I had more builds over the past year, but I just build so slow. I'm hoping I can remedy that in the coming...oh, I don't know...decade, or so.

Quoting Pico van Grootveld Congrats on your MOCiversary and a great 2014 to you too Tim! It's nice to read up on what you've been up to and what lies ahead of you this year. You've created some great, inspiring builds. The MOX prize was a fun first timer for me and I'm glad I've gotten to know guys like you. Your SS1 fighter entry is amazing and if you asked me, you'd have won with it :) It was pretty darn close indeed. Keep up your great work man. I wish you good luck with the preparations for Brickworld and I'm very curious to see what you'll be displaying!
Thanks, Pico. The great thing about this community is you are constantly meeting new people, you know, digitally. Every great once in a while, someone like you shows up on the scene, bringing completely unique builds to the table and stealing contests from MP veterans;) Just a joke, Pico. That contest was all yours, and I knew it as soon as I saw your entry. As for BW, I'm curious to see what I'll be displaying as well. Will you be attending?
