For the sci-fi bracket, I chose to make a space pirate. Sir If decided to do the same after he saw mine, but it's interesting to see how differently our entries came out.
About this creation
BEFORE anyone else tells me that this does not look sci-fi enough, look at this:

Caleb's Minifigure Contest

IMAG0115

AAAARR!

IMAG0116

AAARR! Yes, it be a pirate captain!

IMAG0117

Aa... Ooh, look - the cyborg has hair!

IMAG0118

And he's on a BOAR. No, wait a minute - that's a boat. Somehow, my fingers always want to hit the R key when I type that word.

IMAG0121

What be on that boat, but a crew of scurvy space orcs, rallying in defense of their ship? (One of them has a very nice rifle.) Aar, the sight of them almost justifies the captain's attack.

IMAG0122

AAR!

IMAG0123

AAR! Yes, I know I've used "aar" a lot, but that's all I think of when I look at the captain striking poses.

IMAG0125

I don't remember what this picture was for... the hair, maybe?

IMAG0127

Aar.

IMAG0129

AAR! It looks like a good day to be a pirate.

IMAG0130

The captain is victorious! Now the only obstacles between him and the ship's treasure are three decks of low ceilings...

IMAG0131

This is one of the mandatory overview shots of the build, depicting the crew's armory. I like this ship much better than my medieval/fantasy entry, or even any other ship I've built, to be honest.

IMAG0132

Ah, that beautiful siding... How does a ship like this work in space, you ask?

IMAG0133

IMAG0134

Hair. There's also a clever cape trick there, but mostly hair.

IMAG0135

In case you were wondering how I made the head, this is the explanation. The central block is headlight brick.

IMAG0137

IMAG0139

Size comparison with my medieval minifig. The captain looks bigger if you don't look at them side by side, but he's actually the shorter of the two.

IMAG0140

The orcs won in my medieval entry, but lost in this one... can my modern combat scene possibly break the tie?
IMAG0141

That's it - I'm out of footage. Goodbye and thanks for viewing!

Quoting The Object of Legend Really fascinating figure, I just wish he was more solidly connected. Now the vignette is superb! Definitely the best vig I've seen in this contest!
What do you mean by "solidly connected?" He was extremely sturdy from his hair to his boots, if that's what you're wondering.

Quoting toa taile Good work Gilbert, the skies of Kansas have become a dangerous place.
Since we're landlocked, we might as well build ships for space.

Looks good, Gilbert. I love the hair design, and I think the arms work. I agree with Halhi about the legs, though. Overall, great work, and good luck!

Sweet! I thought of doing the thing with the antennae and visors for one of my figs, but It always popped off... nice work!

Your figures are so unique and new! I hope to see more of them. You have a real talent for this type of design! :)

Quoting Thomas of Tortuga Unfortunately, I have to agree with Halhi about the build's scale. The ship looks great, but not in space. Maybe an Enalican expedition? :P
Maybe I should refit the armory and pass it off as an LOM freebuild - he he he. I do think it is spacey enough, though.

Quoting Halhi 141 The scale worked well in your previous MOC, but not in this one I think - like you said, the arms seem awkward and so do the legs, and the glasses don't really work for me. I do like the hair though. The ship is decent too, but it also doesn't really work for me because of the amount shown - it cuts off before the edge of the base, making it look like just a fragment of a ship rather than a section of a whole one. Overall I think it looks too medieval and not sci-fi enough. Sorry for the long and rather negative comment, I do see the effort put into it, just there's a lot of flaws that detract from the overall model for me. Good luck.
No problem - your comments are perfect. They give me smileys AND constructive criticism. I like the way the ship segment looks, actually, and I was also trying for a lower-tech look, like in that Treasure Planet movie. I can agree with you on the pirate, however - sometimes I decide on models more for their parts usage than their overall appearance. Thanks again for the critique.
