MELO R4: Finn Tegotash vs. J-Rod Smith (LOM freebuild)
Orthanc Bracket
About this creation
Here is my entry to round 4 of the 2013-14 Middle Earth LEGO Olympics. My opponent, J-Rod Smith, made a great model of the Black Gate. The theme of the round is The Return of the King quotes, and our quote is:

A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day!

For this round I decided to stray out of Middle-Earth to build something in the Lands of Mythron universe. My outlaw band is attacking a fortified town. A sudden rush let them reach the walls which they proceeded to scale with grappling hooks. In a matter of moments, the resistance collapsed. The guards courage failed and they fled. Seeing there defenders routed, the inhabitants scattered, desperately trying to get out of the town before it was too late.

This is also a freebuild for the Lands of Mythron group.

Outlaws on the wall and a dead guard.

Here are my townsfolk. I really like the farmer on the left.

I agree with Dodge (and disagree with you - yours has masterful texturing/techniques and a great layout; it uses a lot of detail packed into a relatively small build to great effect, as opposed to the larger, spread-out and less unique moc of your opponent.)

Quoting Dodge ... Not to stir the waters, but I'd like to call a foul on the judges for your entry Finn. Each one seemed to enjoy your MOC save for one thing: Paul Vermeesch - I think you may have been better served by staying inside the LOTR universe. Michael Kringe - but then again I agree with Paul about the fact that your build isn't LOTRish enough. Max Pointer I agree with Paul: building something specific to LOTR might have swayed the MELO see-saw in your favor. I believe this is unfair to state, primarily since in the rules it states: the quotes are open to interpretation. Some quotes will be trickier to tackle than others. You can take the basic route and build the scene from which the quote originates, or you can build some other creative MOC that somehow relates. Its up to you! All we ask is that you REFRAIN from including other story themes in your entry (e.g. Star Wars, Harry Potter, Superheroes, etc.). You should not have lost due to LOTR relevance. You had a great build regardless of theme and that's the point.
I would agree with you that LOTR relevance should not be a primary consideration. If, however, the models are basically equal in terms of building quality, presentation, etc (which I would say ours were) then I feel it would be OK to use LOTR relevance as a tie-breaking criteria. Either way, I appreciate your concern.

While this build is certainly reminiscent of Tolkien, I agree with Paul: building something specific to LOTR might have swayed the MELO see-saw in your favor. Your opponent's more direct approach and decent execution earn my vote. Thanks for playing!

In my opinion you're build is very good, even better than J-Rod's, because you used some really amazing techniques here, but then again I agree with Paul about the fact that your build isn't LOTRish enough. This and the fact that it is not only built for MELO led to the decision that I vote for J-Rod's entry.

Quoting Paul Vermeesch While you've done a marvelous job of capturing the tenor of an old farm town, I think you may have been better served by staying inside the LOTR universe. As such, my vote will be going to J-Rod. Best of luck with the other judges!
:( Well, that is probably what I would have said if I were a judge.

I forgot to put this in the description, but I should give Luke Watkins credit for a number of techniques in this (such as the little door) and LukeClarenceVan credit for the cutaway wall technique.
