2014 Mocathalon: The Wolverine

About this creation
2014 Mocathalon

Team: The MOCing Maniacs

Category: Monochrome build: Build anything, any subject, BUT we only want one color used. Choose wisely. To be clear, ‘Dark’, ‘light’, ‘sand’ , ‘trans’ etc. versions of colors count as a single, separate color each. And before you ask… when we say one color we mean ONE COLOR. Not one color for the top layer of the moc and then rainbow colored for the understructure. ONE color. No Photoshop (or similar application) to adjust the color, ONE color used.

Since his first appearance in 1974, Wolverine has become one of the most recognized Super Heroes in the world. His ferocity and gruff exterior is well know among comic readers and viewers of the X-Men franchise films. Though he has many tools to work with, his most well known are his 1-foot adamantium-laced claws.

I present to you this monochromatic build, based on the image you will see at the bottom. To build it, I used only minifigure accessories in the colour black. Each piece was laid loosely on a white foamcore board, which turned out to be a very challenging procedure, and has put me off playing Jackstraws for the rest of my life.

Very impressive artistry here, Chief! I like it better than the source, mainly due to the textures you created. Awesome on a well deserved score!

Thanks for the scores judges! Pretty psyched for those 5's!!!
Quoting T. J. Pownell I'm not very fond of the non-attached technique...
After this, I agree with you! Very difficult to do, especially with the odd shapes on the elements and no grip surface.

I am usually not a fan of these kinds of mosaics (not even the ones blogged by the Brothers Brick!), but this one is absolutely wonderful. Nicely done!

Not only it's a wonderful approach (I still remember Xenomurphy's awesome Spider Man), but the piece selection for each area is spot-on. I can't even imagine the amount of thought you must have put into this before even starting the build.
