Blast off with the Cosmic Rail Runner to bring cargo and supplies out to the astronauts' work site!
About this creation

Unofficial LEGOŪ Description:
When astronauts need supplies at their outlying work and exploration sites, the high-speed Cosmic Rail Runner is there for the job! The locomotive pulls two train cars with various containers to suit the needs of the workers. Each train car comes equipped with tools and a folding work robot. Astronauts ride in the passenger container, minerals and blue cheese slopes are loaded into the covered hopper, rockets and satellites are transported on the portable launcher, a rover and loader walker are stored on the flatbed module, and general supplies can be shipped in the box container. The main base includes a command center with a hover scooter. The crane with a working winch lifts modules off of the train and onto the flatbed rover. A crane rover is at the work site to unload modules from the train. No transport job is too small for the crew of the Cosmic Rail Runner!

- Includes Benny and 5 astronaut minifigures
- Features LEGO Power Functions battery box, 2 train motors, working locomotive headlights, infrared receiver and 4-channel, 7-speed, infrared remote control that can run up to 8 different trains at once
- 18 curved track pieces, 17 straight track pieces, 2 switch track, and 2 base plates
- Note: Tracks not compatible with LEGO 9V Trains; Train is compatible with LEGO 9V tracks
- 1904 pieces

First we have the main base, which features a modified crane from 7939 Cargo Train and a Command Post. The crane is able to move sideways along the rails to better load and unload both the train and flatbed rover.

The overall design has been largely unaltered, except for a few items here and there. Be sure to wave back to the astronaut. *mimics high-pitched voice* Hello! (I really do imagine them speaking that high and odd-like in my head)

The backside of the crane's cab, which shows the working winch (not wench) mechanism.

The Command Post. It features a rotating and swiveling satellite dish/antenna array for communications. There is also a hover scooter.

The hover scooter is taken from 5985 Space Police Central and has only been altered to include the much needed steering wheel. Why the overall design idea of hover scooters from Classic Space to Space Police excluded the steering wheel is beyond me.

The flatbed rover and box container are from 10219 Maersk Container and the small modules are from 4559 Cargo Railway. By removing the 2x2 round tile on top of the box container, the winch is able to connect and lift the container. The wheels on the rover and trailer have been replaced to keep the Classic Space feel. The small modules are able to fit side-by-side on the front of the trailer.

The crane rover is modified from 4549 Container Double Stack. Just like the large crane at the main base, it too has a working crane winch with the same hook and connecting piece for lifting modules from the train.

Next up is the passenger module. Wave hello at the creepy astronauts!

It features opening doors and a removable roof. Also on the roof is a spot for the crane to attach by removing the 2x2 round tile.

Borrowed from the 10233 Horizon Express is a working bathroom with a sliding door.

The covered hopper comes from 4564 Freight Rail Runner.

By removing the 2x4 plate, we once again have a spot for cranes to attach. It also lets the hopper to open its top coverings so that minerals and blue cheese may be loaded.

Just like the Freight Rail Runner, the load is able to be dumped out the side by opening the access doors and rotating the internal component.

Ah, the portable satellite rocket launcher.

The generator is able to open up, the launcher unfolds, and the satellites are able to be loaded onto the rockets. CSP (Classic Space Portable).

The flatbed module contains the rover and walker, which is courtesy of my Crystal Harvester. The walker is there to mine for minerals and load them either into the rover or the covered hopper. The rover features a tipping bed.

A special ramp is included with the set to unload the rover and walker either at the main base or out at the work site.

Alright, onto the train cars! They are, for the most part, my own design. The shared bogie is from the Horizon Express. The set features and additional shared bogie so that additional train cars may be added.

Each train car features a storage box and work drawers on each side for holding tools or other special space gadgets. They also feature their own set of tools and a folding work robot. The tools are a flashlight-type device, a wrench, a radio, another thingy, and a metal detector. I cannot remember where I got the idea for the folding robot from since I have had it sitting on my computer for a long while. I was searching through my files, stumbled across it, and realized that it would work perfectly.

Here it is shown that the work robot is able to fold up and fit inside the train car.

The locomotive is my GP-01 Classic Space Locomotive. Benny is the engineer. Despite his oxygen loss, he is still fully qualified for the tasks and duties of engineer.

The only addition that I made was the inclusion of the Control Switch to switch the polarity of one of the Power Functions train motors. As stated in the GP-01's description somewhere, it is included, but I finally got around to making a brick-built placeholder.

The set in its entirety. Note: the current 7-speed remote does not exist in LDD, so the older remote is used as a placeholder.

*Twitch's Remarks*
Thanks to David and David and their helpful inputs for the train car designs. I used a lot of parts and components from official sets to give a feel of familiarity and to bring back some of the older designs. I did include a lot of my own designs and touches to help give it some flair. I wanted the set to have a lot of play within itself, but it is still able to be expanded upon or be added to with other sets. I own the Emerald Night set, and I was disappointed that it only included one coach. Other newer train sets that are totally awesome do not include much else, like track or other extras. That became a major goal for this: to create a more complete set that had as much play factor as possible. Hopefully I achieved that with this. And yes, in the main picture the robot is holding a radio. It makes perfect Classic Space sense and is within the logic. Also, I call them "creepy astronauts" since they are always waving and have that smile on their faces. The imagined high pitched "hello" does not help, either.
As always, please rate and comment! Constructive criticism is always welcome.

Quoting David Roberts I like the palettised modules that go onto the train. The idea of adapted the Town models into CS is very neatly done, especially the colour scheme.
Thank you! I am hoping that the AFOLs that had those sets growing up like I did will appreciate them being brought back in this MOC.

Quoting Murdoch 17 Great job! Do you have anymore Classic Space ideas floating around somewhere?
I have a few. David Alexander mentioned something about the locomotive resembling more of an asymmetric spaceship, so my freight locomotive will be ugly like that. Another official set locomotive is going to the Classic Space chop shop!

Quoting Stephan N This is an outstanding idea. The old style has been preserved completely. It's fantastic, a CS train set. Your details are simply terrific implemented in MOCs. Very great
