2014 MocAthalon: The Dream is Collapsing!
About this creation
2014 MocAthalon

Team: Jigsaw

Category: Rube Goldberg machine.
This one has become a fan favorite over the years while also being one of the more difficult categories to master. Create a working contraption overcomplicating a simple task. Think of Rube Goldberg's crazy contraptions, the game Mouse Trap, or the Lego Great Ball Contraption. While it is NOT required to show a video of your contraption working, it would REALLY help if you did. If you are unable to provide a video you MUST include as many pictures as possible showing your creation working at every stage.

I built a functional representation of the movie "Inception" in LEGO form. If any of you haven't seen "Inception", I'm just warning you this creation will confuse you. I'll mention what scene each part of the build is from, but I won't explain the story (too hard to explain in anything less that a book's worth of words) SO WATCH "INCEPTION"!!!!!

Now what would a build for the Rube Goldberg category be with out a video?....

Now for the pics!

Gotta love riding an elevator in zero gravity powered by C4 or whatever! Note even the straps around the "sleepers" are the same color as in the movie! :P

Once the elevator hits the bottom, it triggers a spring launcher which hits the van off the bridge!

"Inception. Is it possible?" Actually yes.

"You're waiting for a train..." The van swings around like a hammer and pushes the train. The train then runs over a lever which simultaneously drops Cobb and Mal
and triggers the last (and my favorite) function!

Death. Death is the only way to wake up. Unless you're not in a dream. Sometimes it's hard to tell.... "Mal, you listen to me, alright?!"

----------------

The spinning top. I knew I had to incorporate this into the build, but it took me a while to figure out the mechanism. Works like a charm now. Or should I say totem?

The cast of characters (from left to right): Eames, Arthur, Cobb, Ariadne, Saito, and is that Mal in the distance? Uh oh.

Van. Eh. BATTLE-DAMAGE-VAN!!! OH YEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!

And let's finish it off with the sleep machine. Remember kids, getting a healthy amount of sleep every day will help you grow strong and smart!*

Elliott, I think you've built something quite wonderful here; certainly a fitting tribute to the film, but also a great amalgam of the film and a Rube Goldberg machine. Thank you for sharing this. ~Dave

The whole presentation and build of your contraption was incredible. Yes, I've seen the movie and it was awesome too. Next time you do a video like this, wear shoes. I rate this a 10. I have no idea what the scoring system is for these contests.

Brilliant build. Perhaps not as many steps as some Rube Goldberg machines, but very well designed - far more aesthetically pleasing than most. Terrific work.

That has to be the greatest most useless thing EVER! As MC put it, all that to spin a top. Pure genius there Elliott! AND themed no less with one of the greatest flicks of recent history. Extremely well conceived and perfectly executed. Although, since the top fell at the end of it's cycle, they're all dead. XD Thank you for including Mal, too. Completely clever and outstanding!
