MocAthalon 2014 Team Plastic Surgeons (M.C. Escher - Bird Tessellations)
About this creation
Category
M.C. Escher: You know the famous artist, if you don't, go look him up. Build one of his famous works of art, whether it be Relativity, Waterfall, Drawing Hands, The Penrose Triangle, etc. We want to see the same mind-boggling drawings made into Lego. For examples in Lego, take a look at Paul Vermeesch's "Star Wars Relativity V2", Legohaulic's "Nightmare", and Ian Spacek's "The Art of War." We want to see creativity!

Team: Plastic Surgeons

The challenge of this category should not be underestimated, nor the genius of M.C. Escher. This was my fifth attempt to try and capture one of M.C. Escher's classic tessellations, and I can tell you it wasn't easy. When you start to work on the build, the precision of the original drawings becomes all too apparent. There is no room for rough approximations; to get this right you have got to get the lines spot on. The limited set of slopes Lego provides made this an endless case of rebuilding, then rebuilding again in different scales just to get things to align properly. In the end I think I got a pretty nice piece of sculpture out of the process. So judges, did I pull it off?

Quoting matt rowntRee Good god, you did it! I knew this one would be difficult and was curious to see what the master of positive and negative space would come up with to tackle this beast. Escher's vision was inexplicably overlooked in regards to his precision. He had the advantage of working in 2-D, in Lego, with their limited palette of slopes and curves, I couldn't see a viable way to adequately convey his tessellations and technique. But there it is! Fantastic accomplishment David in a truly mind bending, sadistic category! (No offense to the particular judge that conceived it.) ;)
Lateral thinking and tenacity in equal measure. What else can I say.

Quoting MCLegoboy ! I think had there been more of a teselating patturn with the red birds, it would bump up the build, but there are only so many bricks to put together in so little time. Great work though, I love Escher's work, I even have a book full of it. I think you nailed the shapings, they look almost as if Escher had some LEGO bricks just lying around, waiting to be put together. Great job!
I was caught in this no mans land with enough pieces to create two more black birds, but not enough to make a huge ranging field of repetitions. I opted for the cleaner sculptural form rather than a half-way house.

Quoting Topsy Creatori (StoveTopCreator!) Beautiful tessellation! I' m curious, did you develop it from sketcings or LEGO piece manipulations? :)
Slow adjustments to pieces; although I did have the Escher original to hand for reference.

Quoting clayton Marchetti Wow! Incredible job ! That must have been really challenging to make the three blackbirds create the forth red bird. Mind bogglingly awesome.
Initially the 4th bird was just a negative space, but I think I made the right decision busing him in red bricks in the end.

Quoting Tim C Man, David. I can only imagine that you tore out the majority of your hair while you were trying to get this MOC right. There is a certain amount of patience, I think, that we all have to have to tolerate this hobby of ours, but I'm pretty sure I don't have the patience for this. What a tough category! I think you pulled it off brilliantly, though, with a dash of genius. I am truly astounded. It takes your artistic LEGO style to a completely different level and it makes me wonder if we can expect more physical tesselations from you or if you will gladly never again pick up this torch. Very nice work, David, and best of luck to you in the MocAthalon.
I wanted to be even more ambitious, and no doubt the challenge of tessellations will grab me again.
