Bofors 'S' Tank

Hello fellow Lego addicts! Here is a creation I built a while ago, but haven't uploaded yet because of issues with Java etc. This is the Bofors 'S' tank. Officially called the Stridsvagn 103, it was built for the Swedish army in the 1950s. The 'S' is usually said to stand for 'Swedish'. Okay, that said, I based this whole model on a single picture in one of my books; so it's not especially accurate around the back and top. I think that the top of this model is actually quite different from the real thing. However, after sitting on my desk waiting for Java and the uploader to get sorted out, the tank has had lots of time to be improved. I'm very happy with it.
About this creation

Here is a photo of the real tank. The Bofors 'S' served until the 1990s, when it was replaced by the Stridsvagn 122, which I believe is still in service today.

Side profile

The back. I imagined what the back would look like because the single picture I had was of the front. I like how it turned out. I think that the cupolas need to be moved farther back to be more accurate.

I'm not great at building these machine guns, but I think this one looks pretty good.

Gun elevation

Top of the tank

Top of the tank. I seem to remember typing that lately...

Bottom of the tank. Yup, you knew I would say that...

The tracks are a bit too wide. Not much I could do about that without buying more of the narrow treads so I could double them.

The picture in my book looked very much like this. Basing a 3D model on a single 2D picture was a challenge, and it was particularly difficult to figure out how far back the crew hatches should go without additional pictures.

You can pick it up, if you know how. If you don't know the trick, you still can pick it up, but it tends to come in more than one piece. :)

Scale shot...

Another scale shot...

The traditional last picture, sort of dominated by the 105 mm gun. I really enjoyed trying to model a tank with a minimum of information, basing a lot of it on my imagination rather than making a completely accurate model. Tell me what you think!

God bless,

-James

Very cool! Indeed a very unique design. And well done too! check out the cv90-40 tank design, it is somewhat similar and armed with a 40mm auto-cannon :-)

Quoting Alex Sonny Nice! A very nice depiction of the absolutely insane Swedish S tank! The overall slope is really good as is the gun mount. Only thing is, why did you get a 2D blueprint to build it? I prefer as much info as I can get :D
Thanks for the comment :) The design process for a tank often begins with me seeing a picture in one of my tank books. Then I build a small part of it, like the turret, or the basic chassis. Then I find more pictures of it, usually on the Internet, and finish the tank based on those. However, for the S Tank, I wanted to have some fun; so I built it based on the single picture. It was a lot more challenging, and I enjoyed using my imagination more while sort of designing the parts of the tank I couldn't see. Actually my model turned out very close to the real tank; I only noticed this when I looked at more Internet pictures after posting it... LOL

Quoting lone wolf That is the weirdest looking tank... Looks accurate from what I can tell, good job.
Knowing my interest in odd tanks, I will have to get around to building a Lee some day... :-)

Quoting cyberfrank 2010 the s tank has always been in my favs, I wonder how effective it is considering it has no turret, you did a great job on it!
It's definitely better for defensive work because of the lack of a turret. Glad you like it!

Great job! You've captured the ultra low profile of the real S-tank very well.
